Symptoms of Gerd and Treatment

?

Gastro esophageal reflux disease or GERD is a medical digestive condition in which the liquid content in the stomach is forced back into the esophagus. This occurs due to the irregular muscle contraction and release of the lower esophageal sphincter or LES. When foods are consumed, the LES is stated to close the failure of which can result in such acid reflux. Hence in such cases the acid produced in the stomach enters the esophagus causing disruption in the normal digestive process. This acidic eruption into the esophagus may cause inflammation in its lining which results in esophageal reflux disease. Thus it becomes necessary to understand the symptoms of gerd so that they are recognized and treated immediately. ?

?

What causes GERD?

The stomach generates gastric acid which is a fluid that helps in the digestive process. This acid pays a pivotal role in digesting proteins by activating the enzymes which assist in digestion. It assists in ingesting proteins so that the digestive system can break down the long chain of amino acids. The formation of GERD or acid reflux is caused due to various reasons. The most prominent one though is the abnormal functionality of the LES. Studies conducted on several patients state that the irregular contraction and abnormal relaxation of the LES causes acid to flow into the esophagus. When there are more than two such refluxes in a week, it leads to severe gerd symptoms which are caused both to adults and children alike.

Common GERD symptoms

It is not difficult to understand the symptoms of acid reflux. However, warning signs and symptoms can imply severe GERD conditions which can get complicated in certain cases. Some common indigestion symptoms are:

?

? Inflammation of the area behind the ribcage or heat generation in heart after meals can stay up to several hours. Thus inflammation of this kind can move up to other parts of the abdomen like the stomach and even throat.

?

? In this condition, lying down or even bending can cause more discomfort. This is still another symptom of gerd which can cause severe discomfort.

?

? Regurgitation or bitterness of mouth is a state which occurs due to the burning sensation in the throat.

?

? In some cases patients can even suffer from chronic soreness and even lose their voice at times.

?

? Hiccups can occur accompanied by difficulty in swallowing.

?

? The worst or severe condition that require consulting the doctor are cases like blood vomiting or passing of black stools.

?

? Due to delay in muscle contraction response in esophagus, there may be a constant urge to cough for no reason.

?

Consult a doctor if you happen to have certain queries related to healthcare or the symptoms of the disease. Never disregard seeking information from a suitable medical practitioner as such indigestion symptoms can lead to severe disease as well.

?

Foods to avoid

Consuming certain foods in your diet causes inflammation of heart or heartburn. ?There are various methods to cure symptoms of gerd, proper food consumption being the most obvious one. But in severe stages of the disease drug administration becomes essential. Hence, it is crucial to take action by treating gerd symptoms from an early stage. Foods that must be avoided for those suffering from gerd conditions are enlisted as follows:

?

? Alcohol ? Alcohol initiates acid reflux due to several reasons. Alcohol is known to relax the body system which explains how it relaxes the LES. Thus the combination of acid reflux and alcohol intake causes severe heartburn, abdominal pain and bloating.?

?

? Caffeine ? Caffeine is also known to have relaxing components which is quite similar to alcohol in nature. Thus limiting intake of caffeine in coffee or carbonated beverages is recommended.?

?

? Citrus fruits and juices ? Citric fruits are highly acidic which can cause heartburn in patients. Oranges, lemons and grapefruit can cause acid reflux when consumed by a patient suffering from the disease.

?

? Onions, garlic and tomatoes ? Avoid raw onions in your diet as most people suffer from indigestion symptoms post consumption. Garlic is also has essential health benefits but may not be suitable for a person suffering from this ailments. Tomatoes for the similar reason are usually too acidic for people with gerd disease.

?

? Spicy and fried foods ? Most people know that fried foods cause acid reflux as they are higher in trans-fat. This slows down digestion and initiates the juices to move back to the esophagus. Thus it becomes vital to refrain from eating spicy and fried foods which accentuate the condition.
