Don't ring the final bell on local boxing just yet, says Valley East Boxing Club coach Peter Yannacoureas.
Ahead of his club's trip to the Brampton Cup development tournament this weekend, Yannacoureas predicted ranks will continue to swell in the weeks and months to come.
"Boxing has declined a bit, but we're trying to revive it a bit through our club," Yannacoureas said. "We have about 15 members right now, but we're growing every day. We have a bright future."
Four fighters from the Valley East club will hit the ring this weekend.
Gary Harvey, 20, will compete in the 135-pound division and Darryl Bouillon, 24, will box at 165 pounds. Liam Mitchell, 16, is a 145-pounder and Bradshaw Mitchell, 14, tips the scales at 110 pounds.
Har vey competed in the tournament for the first time last year, winning his first bout and then losing a close decision in his second to earn a bronze medal.
Bouillon also debuted in Brampton last year, losing to a more experienced fighter who eventually won the division.
The Mitchells, meanwhile, are taking part for the first time.
"Two have more experience, two have a little less, but I think they all have a good chance," Yannacoureas said.
Brampton Cup action begins Friday and continues through Sunday.
"This tournament is very important for us, because it's a development tournament," Yannacoureas said.
Members of the Valley East Club train four days a week at their facility in the upper level of Ray Plourde Arena, at 1919 Helene St. in Val Caron.
The club is open Monday through Thursday, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Members of the coaching staff include Yannacoureas, who has been coaching in Greater Sudbury since 1972 and participated in the 2004 Olympics, as well as Bill Rannelli Jr., a five-time Canadian champion.
