Wichita?s golfers got a temporary reprieve from higher greens fees Tuesday when nearly two hours of City Council debate produced no consensus on how to proceed on the future of the city?s golf courses.
Council members were unable to agree to a proposed series of fee hikes to raise enough revenue for the courses? debt service, approximately $300,000. As a result, despite the willingness to adopt the remainder of the park board?s recommendations for the future of the golf courses, council members agreed to defer the issue until March 20 to give the parks officials time for further input.
The park board recommended a series of across-the-board greens fee increases, including $2 per round in 2012 and $1 per round in 2013 and 2014.
In addition, the park board recommended:
?? Maintaining all current golf courses
?? Improving customer service and marketing
?? Reducing debt service by eliminating $1.3 million from a 2018-19 capital improvements project at Planeview Park, thus whittling the current $7 million debt service tab at Auburn Hills
?? Cutting the golf course capital improvement plan from $6.3 million to $1.1 million
Council member Jeff Longwell, prompted by comments from the public, said he?s unwilling to raise rates until the city sees the effect of improved customer service and marketing at the courses, which should result in a 2 percent increase in rounds played.
In addition, Longwell and other council members said they want a golf course advisory board, made up of experts in the golf business, to help advise them on the courses? future, which could include privatization.
