Symptoms of Gerd and Treatment

?

Gastro esophageal reflux disease or GERD is a medical digestive condition in which the liquid content in the stomach is forced back into the esophagus. This occurs due to the irregular muscle contraction and release of the lower esophageal sphincter or LES. When foods are consumed, the LES is stated to close the failure of which can result in such acid reflux. Hence in such cases the acid produced in the stomach enters the esophagus causing disruption in the normal digestive process. This acidic eruption into the esophagus may cause inflammation in its lining which results in esophageal reflux disease. Thus it becomes necessary to understand the symptoms of gerd so that they are recognized and treated immediately. ?

?

What causes GERD?

The stomach generates gastric acid which is a fluid that helps in the digestive process. This acid pays a pivotal role in digesting proteins by activating the enzymes which assist in digestion. It assists in ingesting proteins so that the digestive system can break down the long chain of amino acids. The formation of GERD or acid reflux is caused due to various reasons. The most prominent one though is the abnormal functionality of the LES. Studies conducted on several patients state that the irregular contraction and abnormal relaxation of the LES causes acid to flow into the esophagus. When there are more than two such refluxes in a week, it leads to severe gerd symptoms which are caused both to adults and children alike.

?

Common GERD symptoms

It is not difficult to understand the symptoms of acid reflux. However, warning signs and symptoms can imply severe GERD conditions which can get complicated in certain cases. Some common indigestion symptoms are:

?

? Inflammation of the area behind the ribcage or heat generation in heart after meals can stay up to several hours. Thus inflammation of this kind can move up to other parts of the abdomen like the stomach and even throat.

?

? In this condition, lying down or even bending can cause more discomfort. This is still another symptom of gerd which can cause severe discomfort.

?

? Regurgitation or bitterness of mouth is a state which occurs due to the burning sensation in the throat.

?

? In some cases patients can even suffer from chronic soreness and even lose their voice at times.

?

? Hiccups can occur accompanied by difficulty in swallowing.

?

? The worst or severe condition that require consulting the doctor are cases like blood vomiting or passing of black stools.

?

? Due to delay in muscle contraction response in esophagus, there may be a constant urge to cough for no reason.

?

Consult a doctor if you happen to have certain queries related to healthcare or the symptoms of the disease. Never disregard seeking information from a suitable medical practitioner as such indigestion symptoms can lead to severe disease as well.

?

Foods to avoid

Consuming certain foods in your diet causes inflammation of heart or heartburn. ?There are various methods to cure symptoms of gerd, proper food consumption being the most obvious one. But in severe stages of the disease drug administration becomes essential. Hence, it is crucial to take action by treating gerd symptoms from an early stage. Foods that must be avoided for those suffering from gerd conditions are enlisted as follows:

?

? Alcohol ? Alcohol initiates acid reflux due to several reasons. Alcohol is known to relax the body system which explains how it relaxes the LES. Thus the combination of acid reflux and alcohol intake causes severe heartburn, abdominal pain and bloating.?

?

? Caffeine ? Caffeine is also known to have relaxing components which is quite similar to alcohol in nature. Thus limiting intake of caffeine in coffee or carbonated beverages is recommended.?

?

? Citrus fruits and juices ? Citric fruits are highly acidic which can cause heartburn in patients. Oranges, lemons and grapefruit can cause acid reflux when consumed by a patient suffering from the disease.

?

? Onions, garlic and tomatoes ? Avoid raw onions in your diet as most people suffer from indigestion symptoms post consumption. Garlic is also has essential health benefits but may not be suitable for a person suffering from this ailments. Tomatoes for the similar reason are usually too acidic for people with gerd disease.

?

? Spicy and fried foods ? Most people know that fried foods cause acid reflux as they are higher in trans-fat. This slows down digestion and initiates the juices to move back to the esophagus. Thus it becomes vital to refrain from eating spicy and fried foods which accentuate the condition.

By BEN LEESON, THE SUDBURY STAR

Updated 10 hours ago

Don't ring the final bell on local boxing just yet, says Valley East Boxing Club coach Peter Yannacoureas.

Ahead of his club's trip to the Brampton Cup development tournament this weekend, Yannacoureas predicted ranks will continue to swell in the weeks and months to come.

"Boxing has declined a bit, but we're trying to revive it a bit through our club," Yannacoureas said. "We have about 15 members right now, but we're growing every day. We have a bright future."

Four fighters from the Valley East club will hit the ring this weekend.

Gary Harvey, 20, will compete in the 135-pound division and Darryl Bouillon, 24, will box at 165 pounds. Liam Mitchell, 16, is a 145-pounder and Bradshaw Mitchell, 14, tips the scales at 110 pounds.

Har vey competed in the tournament for the first time last year, winning his first bout and then losing a close decision in his second to earn a bronze medal.

Bouillon also debuted in Brampton last year, losing to a more experienced fighter who eventually won the division.

The Mitchells, meanwhile, are taking part for the first time.

"Two have more experience, two have a little less, but I think they all have a good chance," Yannacoureas said.

Brampton Cup action begins Friday and continues through Sunday.

"This tournament is very important for us, because it's a development tournament," Yannacoureas said.

Members of the Valley East Club train four days a week at their facility in the upper level of Ray Plourde Arena, at 1919 Helene St. in Val Caron.

The club is open Monday through Thursday, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Members of the coaching staff include Yannacoureas, who has been coaching in Greater Sudbury since 1972 and participated in the 2004 Olympics, as well as Bill Rannelli Jr., a five-time Canadian champion.

For more membership fees and more information, contact Yannacoureas at 705-560-3749, Rannelli at 705-969-9943, Rick Rannelli at 705-674-7782 or Stuart Mitchell at 705-593-2230.

Finding Health Insurance | Budgeting In the Fun Stuff

If you're new to BFS, please subscribe to my RSS feed. It shows me a vote of support and keeps me motivated to keep your attention. If you have any questions or comments for me, please contact me and I'll get back to you asap. Thanks for visiting!

Yay, Mr. BFS and I have health insurance!!!? It actually ended up being way easier to initially find than I thought it would be, but picking the right insurance policy still was a pain in the booty.? I really dislike trying to guess at our future needs, so we just tried to find something similar to what we had and picked from there.

Using Esurance

I asked a few fellow work-from-home bloggers how they found health insurance, and Esurance kept coming up over and over again.? They do indeed make it dang easy to find a variety of plans to choose from.? Here is how I searched for us:

1.? I selected ?Health Insurance? from their drop-down menu and typed in our Zip Code.

2.? I filled out the Applicant Information screen and the part that popped up for my spouse in less than a minute.

3.? 102 plans popped up but I clicked on the tab ?Plans with Your Doctor? since I love?our doctor.

4.? That still gave me 4 different companies with over 100 options total.

5.? We narrowed down our choices by deciding to only look at similar plans to what we had.

6.? Once we found two we liked, I called our doctor the next day and made sure either plan would work and asked for a suggestion.? My doctor?s coworker said that both plans would be about the same but mentioned that one company was harder to work with than most.

7.? We decided to go with the cheaper plan that was also easier for my doctor?s office to work with and I filled out all of the info requested in less than 45 minutes.

8.? We were approved for coverage within 24 hours and it started the day after my husband?s old insurance stopped.

Our Old Health Insurance versus Our New Health Insurance

Here is a quick breakdown of the health insurance we had through my husband?s job as a school librarian.

Old Health Insurance

  • $3500 annual family deductible
  • $5000 additional family annual coinsurance maximum ($8500 a year maximum out of pocket)
  • 20% coinsurance
  • There were no copays for doctor?s visits, just coinsurance, so they just gave us $750 a year in a Health Fund to use for expenses before we started covering 20% of everything.
  • Our total cost was about $500 per month.

New Health Insurance

  • $5000 annual family deductible
  • $4500 additional family annual coinsurance maximum ($9500 a year maximum out of pocket)
  • 20% coinsurance
  • Two $30 doctor?s visits per year and the 20% coinsurance thereafter.? I asked my doctor?s assistant about regular costs of visits ? they would range from $80 for a sore throat to $200 if some tests needed to be ran for an infection.
  • Our total cost is now $310 per month.

My Thoughts Overall

As long as we keep at least $10,000 a year on hand for health emergencies, we are good to go.? Plus we are now saving about $2280 per year in health insurance premiums, which will make up for that loss of $750 upfront.? Prescription drugs may cost a little more for non-generics, but even if the costs double (worst-case scenario based on what drugs I could look up that we have ever been prescribed), we?d only be looking at $1000 a year extra or less, which still keeps our total costs?cheaper overall.

The only draw back to non-employee health care is that normal pregnancies would not be covered at all.? Just in case we do ever decide to have a baby, I looked into the costs in this area, and if we pay for the visits and delivery costs in cash, we could cover everything with about $5000.? And if anything goes abnormally, our insurance kicks in anyway for any surgery to fix me or the baby.

So, overall, I am happy.? We are insured.? We already keep $10,000 on hand for emergencies like medical problems, so this will work fine for us.? If we stay healthy, woot!? If we don?t, we can afford the consequences. All in all, I am satisfied.

Have you ever had to find your own health insurance?? Was the process similar?

Chrysler posts 1st annual net profit since 1997 (AP)

DETROIT ? Higher sales of Jeeps and other new vehicles propelled Chrysler to its first annual net income since 1997, capping a pivotal turnaround that many thought would never happen.

The U.S. automaker, now privately held and majority owned by Italy's Fiat SpA, earned $183 million last year, reversing a $652 million loss in 2010, its first full year out of bankruptcy protection.

Chrysler expects an even better 2012, despite a sluggish and uncertain economy. The company, which sells most of its vehicles in the U.S., predicts it will make about $1.5 billion this year and increase revenue 18 percent.

"We're looking at 2012 with some degree of optimism," CEO Sergio Marchionne said Wednesday. "It's not going to be a walk in the park ... but I think we've got all the elements in place."

He also said that employees, both hourly and salaried, would get bonuses based on the last year's profit, but he wouldn't reveal the amounts.

And Marchionne cautioned that costs will rise in 2012. It will spend billions to promote the new Dodge Dart compact car and to develop a slew of new cars and trucks that will hit the market next year.

Chrysler spent much of 2010 designing new vehicles and trying to spruce up an archaic lineup that wasn't selling well.

Now those vehicles are in showrooms, and they've sold far better than expected, especially the Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV. The company's global sales climbed 22 percent to1.86 million last year. U.S. sales growth was even faster, up 26 percent.

As a result, the company brought in more money. Revenue totaled $55 billion last year, 31 percent higher than in 2010. The added cash, along with relatively low expenses after bankruptcy, and savings from combining technology and engineering with Fiat, helped Chrysler turn itself around.

Last year's profit would have been higher ? $734 million ? if the company hadn't refinanced $7.6 billion in loans granted by the U.S. and Canadian governments. In the second quarter, the company took a $551 million accounting loss because of the refinancing.

But the refinancing in May at far lower rates helped save Chrysler about $100 million in interest expenses last year, and is expected to save $300 million during a full year.

Chrysler's profit has created a role reversal of sorts. When the U.S. government picked Marchionne to take control of Chrysler after the bankruptcy, Fiat was seen as a savior. Now Fiat, which owns 58.5 percent of Chrysler, is struggling and may need the U.S. company's help to survive economic problems in Europe.

Fiat reported a $1.71 billion net profit for last year on Wednesday, but Marchionne said all of that came from Chrysler. During a conference call with reporters and analysts, he was frustrated with Fiat's performance and seemed to issue a warning to his managers in Italy.

"Being European doesn't entitle them to be economically inefficient," Marchionne said.

Chrysler announced a number of new vehicles for this year and next.

It will roll out a revamped Ram 1500 pickup later his year. New versions of the Viper sports car and an all-electric Fiat 500 are also coming later in 2012.

In 2013, the company will concentrate on being more competitive in small and midsize cars. Marchionne said the company has a "product offensive" coming. "The real story is going to unfold in 2013," he said.

Last year, Chrysler cut its net debt by nearly half to $2.9 billion. The company's total cash at the end of 2011 was $9.6 billion. But its pension plan had $6.5 billion fewer assets than total liabilities. Chrysler doesn't expect to make large payments into the plan until 2013 at the earliest.

For the fourth quarter, Chrysler earned $225 million, compared with a loss of $199 million.

Chrysler still faces challenges this year, especially from strong competition in its main market, the U.S. Although its U.S. market share rose 1.3 percentage points to 10.7 percent, it came during a year in which Honda and Toyota dealers ran short of models because the March earthquake and Tsunami in Japan. The disasters hampered their factories' output.

Also, Chrysler's prime U.S. competitors, Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Co., are rolling out many new products this year, as are Korean automakers Hyundai Motor Co. and Kia Motors.

"We're taking nobody for granted," Marchionne said.

Still, U.S. auto sales are expected to rise by about a million this year, to near 14 million, and Chrysler is expected to get a share of the increase.

President Barack Obama has been touting Chrysler's turnaround in recent appearances ahead of the November presidential election. Obama cast the deciding vote to save Chrysler and authorized much of the $12.5 billion in government funding that bailed out the company. Of the original bailout to Chrysler and its financial arm, the government said it was repaid all but $1.3 billion.

Chrysler's turnaround has helped the U.S. economy. Chrysler now employs 57,200 people, 9,400 more than it did when the company left bankruptcy protection in 2009. Marchionne confirmed Wednesday that Chrysler will add a third shift at its plant in Belvidere, Ill., which is making the Dart, Chrysler's first competitive compact car in more than 15 years. The company is expected to add more than 1,000 jobs.

The Dart is important to Chrysler because it gives the company a product to attract first-time buyers who generally stay with a brand if they like their first cars.

Last year, Chrysler's top-selling vehicle was the Ram pickup, followed by the Grand Cherokee. Industry analysts expect pickup sales to slowly rebound this year as small businesses gain confidence and make investments. Both vehicles carry high sticker prices and bring big profits to the company. The starting price of a Grand Cherokee, for instance, is $27,490, but the SUV can run into the $40,000s when options are added.

The full-year profit sets the stage for Chrysler to return to the public stock markets. The company's other owner, a trust that pays retiree health care bills for Chrysler's union retirees, wants to sell its stake to raise money for the payments. Marchionne says a stock offering won't happen until at least next year.

NJ GOP governor apologizes for civil rights remark (AP)

TRENTON, N.J. ? Gov. Chris Christie has apologized for a remark he made about civil rights but says he's not sorry for using a slang term to describe a lawmaker who compared him to segregationist Southern governors.

Christie, a Republican, spoke Tuesday night during TownSquare Media's "Ask the Governor" program on radio station New Jersey 101.5 FM. He apologized to anyone offended by his comment that people in the civil rights struggle of the 1960s would have been happier to have the matter settled by public vote rather than by dying in the streets. He was comparing civil rights to the fight for gay marriage.

But he didn't back down Tuesday from calling Democratic Assemblyman Reed Gusciora "numb nuts" after the lawmaker compared him to former Govs. George Wallace, of Alabama, and Lester Maddox, of Georgia. He says his late mother used the term.

Democratic Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver, one of several black leaders in the state who had chastised the white governor for his civil rights remark, said she was glad he addressed the matter.

"The governor rightfully acknowledged the hurtful and insensitive nature of his remarks," Oliver said in a statement issued after the radio show had aired. "Going forward, I now trust and expect that, as the legislature moves toward implementing marriage equality, the governor will respect the serious nature of the constitutionality of civil rights and equal protection under the law."

Oliver and other state Democrats had held a news conference in Trenton on Monday with Democratic U.S. Rep. John Lewis, of Georgia, to take Christie to task for his comments.

Lewis, an icon of the civil rights movement, said that court and congressional actions were necessary to secure rights for blacks and that no referendum ever would have been successful.
