The figure is nice.. but why don't release a Spartacus in historical version?
I mean.. it's a well known story that the real Spartacus was a Thracian and fought as Thraex in the arena, not as Provocator!!!!
And it's quite clear that the figure you are producing it's a Provocator class Gladiator, from the kind of Helm and for the cardiophilax (breastplate).

Another strange thing that is you armed the Provocator with a kind of Sica (curved sword), that was the typical weapon of Thraex.. The Provocator instead fought with a Gladio (Same weapon of Murmillo).
Provocator fought with an armament that mirror the Legionary Armature..
So also the Shield you placed it's wrong.. maybe good for a Thraex but not for a Provocator, because Provocator Shield was a kind of Legionary Shield (so bigger!!)..

So I don't understand why release a Spartacus, not as Thraex.. and with a mix of weapon and armours between a Provocator and a Thraex..
So historically totally wrong!!!
Some extra historical research would be very welcome in the future!

Commendations on your incredible knowledge. You're the smartest guy in the post.

My word - it's a hobby, not a masters thesis.

For the rest of us, thanks, ACI. It's a sweet figure with a nod to a popular TV show. I'm grateful for advancing the beachhead into the classical warrior realm by providing us with another cool gladiator.

Salud!

There is very little evidence of strictly defined gladiatorial classes from his time, and it was rather by the fighter's origin that he would have been categorized. So, Spartacus was a Thracian, but not a Thraex according to the Imperial-era definition. Also, neither the Provocator class of gladiator, nor the Legionary's rectangular scutum were around at this time.

This figure could very well be flawless in terms of historical accuracy, but we do not have enough evidence to say. Consequently, the creators of the Spartacus: Blood and Sand TV series (upon which this figure could be based) were not bound by many strict historical facts. They worked towards showing a fairly straightforward evolution of gladiatorial styles, using an assortment of weaponry and incorporating the influence of foreign fighting styles--at one point quite obviously introducing a "new class." They did this quite well.

Both the characters in the series and this figure use gear that we at least know existed at the time (yes, there is surely some artistic license). It can be assumed that the gladiators of this period served as inspiration, in terms of style and equipment, to those that came later--that which were eventually delineated into the "types of gladiator" of the Imperial-era. They were the "gods of the arena," because they set the groundwork for those that came later.

So Spartacus was not a Thraex or a Provocator, but he was inspiration for both. And that is why this figure (and the TV show) are more "accurate" than most people realize.
