Sprint?s new Push-to-Talk Service launches Oct. 2

Sprint Direct Connect -- that's the name of the new Push-to-Talk service coming from Sprint  next week (Oct. 2, to be exact), is bringing a lot of changes to Push-to-Talk as we know it today according to Paget Alves, president-Sprint Business.

“We’ve seen steadily increasing demand for faster data speeds, better and broader coverage, and more applications on push-to-talk devices. Sprint Direct Connect is designed to solve for all three.”

Sprint’s 3G data network will be used now instead for Push-to-Talk services instead of the aging iDEN system and while coverage support for Direct Connect won't be as broad at first, Sprint expects that by 2012 direct connect coverage will be almost three times the square miles covered by iDEN.

When it comes to compatible devices, Sprint has stated three new devices will be released in Q3 that are compatible with the new direct connect service. The Kyocera DuraMax and DuraCore will both be available but Sprint left out the other. We're guessing that's because they've not yet announce the previously outed Motorola Admiral, which should support the services as well. Greece: will get loans in time to avoid default (AP)

BERLIN ? Greece will receive its next batch of bailout loans in time to avoid a disastrous default, the finance minister said Tuesday, as stock markets rallied on hopes that the prime minister will discuss new ways of solving the crisis with Germany's leader later in the day.

Reports that European leaders are considering bolder moves to relieve Greece and other countries of their debt burden have buoyed spirits in financial markets, though officials in Chancellor Angela Merkel's government have downplayed such speculation.

The current plan is to have Greece implement painful debt-reduction measures in exchange for rescue loans.

Greece's international creditors are holding up payment of the next batch of those loans until a review of the reforms is completed in the coming days. Without the money, Greece faces bankruptcy in mid-October, potentially sending shock waves through the financial sector in Europe and abroad.

"I am very confident in ... the disbursement of the sixth tranche," Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos said, speaking above the sound of chanting from protesting tax office workers outside the ministry, who blew whistles and set off a fake siren. "But we must do what has been agreed."

The minister said the country had already made great efforts to achieve its fiscal targets, but that a "hyper-effort" was necessary to fully meet its commitments.

Some experts, however, say the current course of austerity is untenable and that Greece will need bigger debt relief. Analysts say that could be achieved by imposing tougher losses on private bondholders, boosting capital in European banks that would take such losses, and increasing the size of the rescue fund.

Greece had originally expected debt inspectors from the International Monetary Fund, the European Central Bank and the European Commission to complete a review of its finances in September and approve the sixth installment of loans from its euro110 billion ($149 billion) bailout.

But the inspectors, known collectively as the troika, suspended their review earlier this month amid talk of missed targets.

Venizelos said the troika would return to Athens this week, and that the next bailout installment, worth euro8 billion ($10.8 billion), would be paid out in time.

In Berlin, Greek premier George Papandreou told a conference of the Federation of German Industries that "we are borrowing to repay" ? but also stressed that Europe needs to show it can get its act together.

"I can guarantee that Greece will live up to all its commitments," Papandreou said ahead of an evening meeting with Chancellor Angela Merkel. He promised that Greeks will "fight our way back to growth and prosperity."

The government recently announced new debt-reducing measures, including pension cuts and tax hikes, fueling outrage among Greeks who have suffered through a year of austerity. Lawmakers are to vote Tuesday night on a new property tax.

Unions have responded with repeated strikes and protests. Public transport workers walked off the job Tuesday for two days, and were to be joined by taxi drivers on Wednesday. Tax office workers were also on strike.

Given the sacrifices being made by ordinary Greeks, Papandreou said that the "persistent criticisms leveled against Greece are deeply frustrating."

"You as businesspeople, you know that inspiration, innovation and motivation are important parts of success," he told representatives of Germany's leading industries. "If people feel only punishment and scorn, this crisis will not become an opportunity ? it will become a lost cause."

He added that Europe needs to prove it can get its act together. Germany, Europe's biggest economy, has been a sometimes-reluctant leader of the rescue efforts.

"We must prove to the markets that we have a firm grip on the debt crisis and that we are determined to resolve it together," he said.

Merkel, also speaking at the industry forum, pledged support for Greece but didn't promise any specific new measures. She expressed "absolute respect" for structural reforms pushed through by Papandreou's government.

"The all-important thing is ? and we will provide every assistance that is wanted from the German side ? that Greece wins back confidence; that we get out of this terrible development that there is bad news every month; and that the impression arises on the markets that Greece is on the right track," she said.

Merkel said Germany would do what it can, whether through private industry or government efforts.

However, she once again rejected the idea of pooling European countries' debt ? for example by issuing joint so-called eurobonds. And she said Germany is "not available" for further economic stimulus programs.

On Thursday, Germany's parliament is to vote on beefing up the powers and lending capacity of the eurozone's euro440 billion ($595 billion) rescue fund ? a facility that already has intervened to help Ireland and Portugal.

German officials, facing distaste within Merkel's center-right coalition at the idea of endless bailouts, have sought to cool down expectations of further increases anytime soon.

Spanish Finance Minister Elena Salgado denied market speculation that the European Union is considering raising the size of the fund to euro2 trillion ($2.7 trillion) ? saying in a television interview that "it is not on the table, nor has it been discussed."

Jones shares his big moment with his flooded hometown

Jon Jones experienced the most triumphant moment of his career on Saturday night, defending the light heavyweight championship with a fourth-round submission of former champ Quinton Jackson. He could have savored the moment and made it all about him, but instead he talked about his beleaguered hometown.

Saying, "Endicott, New York, my heart goes out to you," Jones mentioned the flooding that has hit New York state hard. Endicott, which is near Binghamton in the southern part of the state, is rebuilding now after floods in the wake of Hurricane Irene forced evacuations. Water covered the town in a scene that was described as surreal.

Literature review demonstrates some stroke patients could benefit from treatment outside the typical 3 hour window

Stroke victims may have a longer window of opportunity to receive treatment to save their brain cells, demonstrates a literature review published by University of Alberta medical researchers in Lancet Neurology.

The review, which was published online last week, was written by Ashfaq Shuaib and his colleagues. Shuaib, the senior author, is a researcher in the Division of Neurology with the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta. He is also a practising neurologist and a stroke specialist.

Literature reviews, which bring together large amounts of information from numerous studies, is one form of clinical research often referred to as health-outcomes research. This kind of "translational" work is valuable, since it synthesizes knowledge that lab researchers know and analyzes it for practising physicians so they can provide better patient care. The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry has special expertise in conducting sophisticated health-outcomes research taking knowledge "from bench to bedside."

Shuaib reviewed stroke studies that examined the use of imaging to measure blood flow in the brain after a stroke. The literature was written from 1980 to July 2011. His review notes that using advanced neuroimaging, such as multi-dimensional brain CT scans and MRIs, can provide physicians important information about blood flow in the brain following a stroke. This information could enable doctors to provide better treatment to prevent brain cells from dying, through the use of techniques to increase blood flow in the brain.

The review noted that the presence of good "collateral" blood flow in the brain can "sustain brain tissue for hours" after major arteries to the brain have been affected by a stroke, and this flow could potentially offset injury to the brain. Enhancing or maintaining strong blood flow is a potential therapeutic treatment for stroke; it is currently under investigation in several stroke centres around the world, he says.

Shuaib's review notes that stroke is the second most common cause of death, with the majority of the 16 million cases happening in developed nations. A lack of blood flow is the primary cause of a stroke. It is typically triggered by a blockage in a brain artery due to arteries thinning from a build-up of plaque, or by a mass from the heart or neck vessels restricting blood flow to the brain.

Normal blood flow in the brain is between 50-60 ml/100g/minute. If someone suffers a stroke and blood flow levels in the brain fall below 10 ml/100g/minute, brain cells die within minutes of the stroke. However, if blood flow in the brain is between 10-20ml/100g/minute, "the neurons cease function but remain structurally intact and are potentially revivable if normal blood flow is restored," Shuaib says in the review.

He further adds that brain cell death after a stroke may not be complete for hours or even days after a stroke, meaning that the window to treat some stroke patients is longer than three hours the standard timeframe that has been referenced in medicine since the 1990s. Shuaib says cell death can be complete within as little as an hour in some people following a stroke, while other patients have viable brain tissue and cells for days or indefinitely after a stroke. And with current imaging technology, physicians can determine whether brain cells are dead or have simply ceased functioning post-stroke.

"What we're recommending is, don't look at the window of time only, look at the important tissue window which may be quite prolonged in many patients," says Shuaib. "Don't just say, 'oh this person had a stroke 4.5 hours ago, end of story.' This person may have very good tissue you could treat."

Lea Michele vs. Sarah Hyland: Celebrity Feud

Lea Michele takes her red carpet poses seriously -- perhaps a little too seriously. On Friday, the Glee star said she was wounded by Modern Family actress Sarah Hyland's imitation of her on E!'s Fashion Police.

"I gotta be honest. It hurt my feelings a little bit," said Michele, 25, at Variety's annual Women of Power event. "I really think the message of today is that women should motivate and empower women, and so that's why I'm honored to be a part of today."

Hyland, who plays superficial teen Haley Dunphy on the Emmy-winning Modern Family, was a guest on Joan Rivers' snarky chat show on September 16. When the topic of Michele came up, Hyland, 20, tried to imitate the diva's signature red-carpet pose. Watch the video below!



"She sticks out her collarbone to make her look skinnier and she sticks out her lips," observed Hyland, who watched Michele work it at the Glee 3D movie premiere. "It's very strange. I actually saw a clip of her doing that on the red carpet and you see me in the background, like with my back turned looking at my publicist, being like, 'I don't know what to do right now.'"

The comment was clearly made in jest, but Glee fans bombarded Hyland with Twitter insults, saying that she was jealous of a more successful actress. The day after the show aired, Hyland addressed the controversy.

"I did not intend for my comments to be taken in a malicious way... In no way am I jealous of Lea Michelle," she tweeted. "Congrats Lea. U know how to work the red carpet. I can't take it as seriously as you. That's all I wanted to show on FP. It's strange to me... I don't like the red carpet. I feel silly. So props to her for knowing what she's doing and enjoying it."

"But I won't apologize," Hyland added. "I'm an outspoken person... And I mimicked what I saw with my own two eyes."

The Modern Family actress, who says she's known Michele for six years, also reached out directly to her on Twitter before the Emmys, asking if they could talk at the ceremony. ("It was meant to be humorous, not hurtful," she wrote.) But from Michele's comments this weekend, it sounds like she took the insult as seriously as her Twitter fans! It's too bad that Lea Michele couldn't just laugh it off; she always looks fierce on the red carpet, and it's not like Sarah Hyland can take that away from her. If the Glee actress could take herself a little less seriously, it would do wonders for her diva-ish reputation.

While we're on the subject, has anyone else noticed that Fashion Police has become like the WWE for fashionable starlets? This is the third big fight that's started on the show this year: Ciara angered Rihanna with her comments on Fashion Police in February, and Kelly Osbourne belittled Christina Aguilera during an August episode. Guess insulting someone's outfit is just asking for trouble -- especially if you do it on national television.

Missouri lawmakers repeal teacher-Facebook law

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo.?? Missouri lawmakers voted overwhelmingly Friday to repeal part of a contentious new law that had prohibited teachers from chatting privately with students over Internet sites such as Facebook.

If the repeal is signed by Gov. Jay Nixon, Missouri's law restricting online communications would instead be replaced with a new requirement for public school districts to develop their own policies on the use of electronic media between employees and students.

"It puts things back into the hands of the school districts," said Todd Fuller, a spokesman for the Missouri State Teachers Association, which had challenged Missouri's law in court.

A Cole County judge issued a preliminary injunction placing Missouri's law on hold shortly before it was to take effect Aug. 28, declaring that "the breadth of the prohibition is staggering" and the law "would have a chilling effect" on free-speech rights guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution.

Shortly after the judge's order, Nixon added the online communications law to the agenda of a special session that began Sept. 6. Nixon's written message to lawmakers specifically limited them to repealing the law ? not replacing it with new wording, as they did.

The Missouri Constitution gives the governor the authority to determine which matters lawmakers can consider during extraordinary sessions. But lawmakers contend that does not mean the governor can limit how legislators act on those matters ? for example, by restricting them only to repealing a section of law instead of amending it.

Lawmakers removed the original law's most publicly controversial provision, which barred teachers from using websites that allow "exclusive access" with current students or former students who are 18 or younger, such as occurs with private messages on Facebook. But the repeal went a step further by also requiring public school districts to adopt policies by March 1 on employee-student communications, including "the use of electronic media," in order "to prevent improper communications."

The House passed the legislation to repeal and replace the law by a 139-2 vote. The Senate passed it 33-0 earlier this month.

"When we make errors we need to fix them, and that's what we're doing here today," said Rep. Chris Kelly, a Democrat from Columbia.

The original provisions about Internet communications had been included in a broader law enacted earlier this year that sought to stop school personnel who have sexually abused students from quietly resigning and getting hired by other districts. That law requires schools to share information with other districts about teachers who have sexually abused students and allows lawsuits in cases where districts fail to disclose such information and teachers later abuse someone else. Those provisions of the law were not challenged in court and were not part of the repeal considered during the special session.

There was little debate about the online communications section of the legislation when it passed this spring. But afterward, confusion and concerns began to mount among some teachers about whether they could be barred from using Facebook. Other teachers feared the law also could have had implications for online courses, which may be configured to allow limited access only by teachers and students.

"It became easy to call this a Facebook bill, but it was bigger than that," Fuller said. "It was more, 'we're using a form of social media in the classroom right now that we're not sure if we can continue to use.' "

The only two House members to vote against the repeal Friday were Republican Jay Barnes of Jefferson City and Democrat Mike Colona of St. Louis. Both are attorneys. And both suggested that local school districts could end up adopting policies that still infringe on free speech, essentially multiplying the lawsuits that could be filed.

"We just traded one big unconstitutional ball of wax for 529 little balls of wax," Barnes said.

S. California grocery workers vote on labor deal (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Southern California shoppers should soon learn whether grocery stores will remain open as another wave of supermarket employees votes on a deal to stave off a strike.

Members of several union locals are at the polls Saturday. It's the second day of voting on the agreement their leaders negotiated early this week with the region's three largest grocery chains.

A spokesman for United Food and Commercial Workers Local 324 says the vote results could be announced shortly after the polls close at 6 p.m.

Union officials have urged the rank-and-file to ratify the plan.

Supermarket giants Vons, Ralphs and Albertsons say the agreement would allow them to remain competitive.

In 2004, a four-month strike and lockout cost the industry $2 billion and left shoppers scrambling for other options.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Congress' latest must-pass bill is prompting a new House-Senate showdown, highlighting a partisan rift so raw that an effort to help disaster victims has become mired in disputes over jobs, the national debt and the discredited Solyndra solar energy company.

The Republican-led House approved revamped legislation early Friday providing $3.7 billion to help people battered by Hurricane Irene, Texas wildfires, tornadoes and other natural disasters. The money would replenish an emergency fund that Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano warned could be depleted early next week.

The measure would also prevent a federal shutdown next weekend by financing government agencies from the Oct. 1 start of the new federal fiscal year through Nov. 18. It was approved by a near party-line 219-203 vote shortly after midnight.

Leaders of the Democratic-run Senate promised to quickly kill the legislation, saying it lacked enough disaster assistance. Democrats also complained about cuts it would make to help pay for the aid: trimming $1.5 billion from Energy Department loans aimed at spurring development of fuel-efficient vehicles, a program they said is creating badly needed jobs.

"They insist on holding out on Americans who have suffered devastating losses," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said of GOP lawmakers. "Americans are tired of this partisanship. They deserve to know that when disasters strike, we will be there to help them."

The Senate version, approved last week with the support of 10 GOP senators, provided $6.9 billion in disaster aid and no cuts to help pay for it.

White House spokesman Jay Carney faulted House Republicans for the deadlock on Friday, saying they had passed legislation knowing it would die in the Senate, just as they had during last month's fight over extending the federal debt limit.

"The fever hasn't broken ? the behavior that we saw this summer that really repelled Americans continues," Carney said.

A spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, blamed Democrats, saying the House-passed bill had enough money for the Federal Emergency Management Agency in the short term and that Congress could provide more money later.

"The Senate Democratic leadership is essentially threatening to delay FEMA money that families need right now for a partisan gain," said the spokesman, Michael Steel.

It was unclear how the standoff would be resolved. The House and Senate had both planned to take next week off, but neither seemed likely to risk accusations of ignoring the thousands of Americans victimized by natural calamities or of allowing the government to shut its doors.

"We're establishing priorities," said Rep. David Dreier, R-Calif. "We have a priority, that being dealing with our fellow Americans."

House passage represented a reversal from an embarrassing setback the chamber dealt its Republican leaders on Wednesday. On that day, the House rejected a nearly identical measure, shot down by Democrats complaining its disaster aid was too stingy and conservative Republicans upset that its overall spending was too extravagant.

The bill the House approved Friday morning contained just one change ? an additional $100 million in savings from cutting a second Energy Department loan program, this one aimed at sparking new energy technologies.

That is the same program that financed a $528 million federal loan to Solyndra Inc., the California solar panel maker that won praise from President Barack Obama but has since gone bankrupt and laid off its 1,100 workers. The Obama administration had praised Solyndra as a model for green energy companies, but now Congress is investigating the circumstances under which the government approved the loan.

Forty-eight Republicans had voted against the bill on Wednesday, a number GOP leaders cut in half in Friday's vote after hours of lobbying. One who switched from "no" to "yes" was conservative Rep. Jeff Landry, R-La., who said he was swayed by the new cuts in the technology loan program.

"This bill is like dessert," the freshman said in an interview of the new measure. "Are you kidding? I came here to cut wasteful spending."

The gridlock over the spending bill was the third time this year the two parties have clashed over legislation whose passage both sides considered crucial.

In April with just hours to spare, the two sides reached agreement on a bill that averted a federal shutdown and provided money for government agencies through September. Then this summer, they battled for weeks before finally approving legislation extending the government's borrowing authority and narrowly preventing a historic federal default.

Against a backdrop of the 2012 presidential and congressional elections and angst over the country's dismal job market, this year's clashes have been intensified by the infusion of dozens of tea party Republicans who often show little inclination to compromise.

Wednesday's defeat of the spending bill was only the most recent time they have made life difficult for Boehner. And it underscored the challenges ahead this fall as Congress tackles efforts to fix the economy, create jobs and try to control the $14 trillion national debt.

The money to finance agencies beginning Oct. 1 is needed because Congress has completed none of the 12 annual spending bills.

Lady Gaga Calls For Meeting With Obama After Bullied Teen's Suicide

Lady Gaga was so shaken with the news about the death of 14-year-old Jamey Rodemeyer this weekend that she has called for President Obama to enact laws making bullying a hate crime.

Rodemeyer, who had posted an "It Gets Better" video in May about his long struggle with bullying at school, took his life on Sunday after what his parents said was years of taunting over his sexuality.

In his video, Rodemeyer cited Gaga as an inspiration, saying, "She makes me so happy. She lets me know that I was born this way. And that's my advice to you from her: You were born this way. All you have to do is hold your head up and you'll go far." The teen seems on the verge of tears when discussing Gaga's message and promising to keep on going despite the hate.

On Wednesday, Gaga expressed her sadness over Rodemeyer's death. "The past days I've spent reflecting, crying, and yelling," she tweeted. "I have so much anger. It is hard to feel love when cruelty takes someone's life." She went further, posting Rodemeyer's "Better" video, and insisting that bullying "must become illegal. It is a hate crime."

In fact, Gaga claimed in a subsequent tweet, she's so upset that she is planning to meet with President Obama on the matter.

"I will not stop fighting," she wrote. "This must end. Our generation has the power to end it. Trend it #MakeALawForJamey." A spokesperson for the White House could not confirm at press time if Gaga has officially set up a meeting with the president to discuss the issue.
