The American Civil Liberties Union Foundation (ACLU), founded in 1920, is a nationwide, nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, with more than 500,000 members and is dedicated to the principles of liberty and equality embodied in the U.S. Constitution. The Criminal Law Reform Project of the ACLU?s National Office in New York City seeks legal interns for the Fall of 2011.
The Criminal Law Reform Project seeks an end to excessively harsh crime policies that result in mass incarceration and stand in the way of a just and equal society. The Project focuses its work at the ?front end? of the criminal justice system, from an individual?s first contact with law enforcement through to the sentencing phase, with an emphasis on ending drug prohibition, which has failed to achieve public safety while putting unprecedented numbers of people behind bars and eroding constitutional rights. We fulfill our mission by litigating and conducting strategic and precedent-setting advocacy that promotes reform of the criminal justice system and drug laws in particular, reduces the number of people entering the system, and protects the constitutional rights of those in the system.
Our Fall 2011 Legal Internship requires a 10-12 week commitment. The internship is part-time, with weekly hours negotiable. Interns are highly encouraged to obtain funding from outside sources, as the internship is unpaid. Arrangements can be made for work/study or course credit.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Legal interns will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience by working alongside Criminal Law Reform Project team. Interns will assist in all aspects of litigation. Interns will gain experience by working on the following:
- Conducting legal and policy research.
- Drafting memoranda, affidavits and briefs.
- Researching prospects for new litigation, including both factual and legal claims. Assisting in the preparation of expert and percipient witnesses for courtroom testimony.
- Assisting with the Project?s non-litigation advocacy work.
- Other projects as assigned.
