Stock jump after storm damage is less than feared

NEW YORK (AP) ? Stocks rose sharply after fears that Tropical Storm Irene would cause widespread catastrophic damage subsided along with the storm. The Dow Jones industrial average gained 220 points in afternoon trading Monday.

Irene raked the East Coast and caused widespread flooding Sunday. Millions were still without power. An insurance consulting firm predicted that the claims paid by insurers would be about $2 billion to $3 billion, far less than the $6 billion the industry paid out after Hurricane Isabel struck the region in 2003.

The lower damage estimates pushed insurance stocks higher. Allstate Corp. rose 6.9 percent, Hartford Financial Services Group Inc. rose 10.4 percent, while Travelers Cos. Inc. rose 4.9 percent.

Utilities companies mostly rose after it became clear their storm-related expenses also would be below earlier estimates. Duke Energy Corp., which serves customers in the Carolinas, rose 1 percent. New York's biggest utility company, Consolidated Edison Inc., rose 1.2 percent.

The New York Stock Exchange and other major U.S. exchanges opened for trading as usual Monday. The Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association, which represents Wall Street banks, said it expected the bond market to operate normally.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 223 points, or 2 percent, to 11,507 in afternoon trading.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 29, or 2.4 percent, to 1,205. The Nasdaq composite index rose 71, or 2.9 percent, to 2,550.

European stocks also jumped after two Greek banks said they would combine to better weather that country's debt crisis.

Greek stocks jumped 14 percent after the country's second- and third-largest lenders agreed to combine, creating the country's largest bank. Greece's government and central bank have been urging banks to merge, saying it would help them survive the country's debt crisis.

Stocks worldwide plunged in late July and early August, in part because of worries about Europe's escalating debt problems. Greece has narrowly avoided bankruptcy twice thanks to emergency loans from the International Monetary Fund and its European neighbors.

The S&P 500 hit a low for the year on Aug. 8, the first trading day after Standard & Poor's downgraded the U.S. credit rating. Since then, it has risen about 7 percent. The index rose nearly 5 percent last week after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said the economy was headed for long-term growth. Bernanke did not announce any new stimulus measures, but left open the possibility for further monetary action.

That reassured investors, said Kim Caughey Forrest, equity research analyst at Fort Pitt Capital Group. "You know what they say: Sometimes no news is good news," she said.

Bank of America Corp. rose 5 percent after the bank said it would sell half of its stake in China Construction Bank Corp. to raise capital in order to comply with new banking regulations. Billionaire Warren Buffett said last week that he would invest $5 billion in the bank, giving the troubled company a badly needed boost of confidence. Charlotte, N.C.-based Bank of America, the nation's largest bank, has lost 35 percent of its value over the past year as investors worry that the bank's liabilities from soured mortgages will get worse and that it will have to sell large amounts of stock to raise capital.

A report that showed consumers spent more money last month also sent stocks higher. The government reported that spending rose 0.8 percent in July. It was a sharp turnaround from June, when Americans cut their spending for the first time in nearly two years.

Volume was low as transit disruptions made it difficult for Wall Street employees to get to work. Flooding and downed trees obstructed tracks throughout the commuter rail systems that bring workers in from the Connecticut, New York and New Jersey suburbs.

Many investment banks that have offices in Lower Manhattan said they would operate as usual, even if employees had to work from home or find alternative ways to get to the office. Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Citigroup Inc. both said their buildings were largely unaffected by the storm.

Ted Weisberg, a trader who has spent 43 years on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, said "it really will be business as usual."

American Express Co., however, said its downtown Manhattan office would be closed Monday.

Many traders were also on vacation in the last week of summer before the Labor Day holiday.

"I think it will be a relatively quiet day from a volume perspective," said Eric Noll, executive vice president of transaction services at Nasdaq OMX Group Inc. "Lots and lots of people are on vacation or planning to go on vacation."

NEW YORK?? With heavy rain falling Saturday night, New York buttoned up against Hurricane Irene, which threatened to paralyze Wall Street and give the big city its worst thrashing from a storm since at least the 1980s.

City officials cautioned that if Irene stayed on track, it could bring gusts of 80 mph overnight that could shatter skyscraper windows.

By early evening, Central Park had seen a wind gust of 35 mph.

Officials added that there was an outside chance that an expected 4-6 foot storm surge in Lower Manhattan on Sunday morning could send seawater streaming into the maze of underground vaults that hold the city's cables and pipes, knocking out power to thousands and crippling the nation's financial capital.

There is also a tornado watch in effect until 5 a.m. Sunday for the New York City area, Long Island and New Jersey.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Friday ordered the first mandatory evacuation ever in New York. More than 370,000 people were told to be out by 5 p.m. Saturday from low-lying areas on the fringes of the city, mostly in Lower Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens.

Many New Yorkers seemed to take it in stride, staying off the streets and hunkering down. Some tweeted about hurricane get-togethers and hot tub parties.

"We already have the wine and beer, and now we're getting the vodka," said Martin Murphy, a video artist who was shopping at a liquor store near Central Park with his girlfriend.

All subway service was suspended because of the threat of flooding in the tunnels ? the first time the nation's biggest transit system has shut down because of a natural disaster. Sandbags and tarps were placed on or around subway grates.

"Heed the warnings," Bloomberg said, his shirt getting soaked as the rain fell in Coney Island. "It isn't cute to say, 'I'm tougher than any storm.' I hope this is not necessary, but it's certainly prudent."

People arrived in a trickle at a shelter set up at a high school in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn. Some carried garbage bags filled with clothing; others pushed carts loaded with their belongings.

They were evacuated from a public housing project in Red Hook, a low-lying area in Brooklyn. To get them to leave, tenants said, management told them the water and power would be shut off at 5 p.m.

"For us, it's him," said Victor Valderrama, pointing to his 3-year-old son. "I didn't want to take a chance with my son."

In Times Square, shops were boarded up and the street performer known as the Naked Cowboy, who stands at the Crossroads of the World wearing only underwear and a guitar, had a life vest on.

As the streets emptied, normally long, harried commutes became a lot easier. For msnbc.com contributor John Springer, the drive from Manhattan across town to Queens took less than 10 minutes, while normally it takes around 30.

With highway patrol vehicles busy elsewhere, Springer said many drivers on the Long Island Expressway were traveling at about 70 to 80 mph and talking freely on their cell phones.

Cars packed parking lots outside grocery and convenience stores and waited in long lines for gasoline as people rushed to prepare.

Boat owners living in Port Jefferson, on the largest deep-water harbor on the North Shore of Long Island, scrambled to find a way to pull their boats out of the harbor after having second thoughts about waiting out the storm.

The NYPD rescued two kayakers off Staten Island who were kayaking near the Mayberry Promenade, reported NBC New York.

NYPD row boats have also been stationed in areas where flooding might occur in the city, according to NBC New York.

Construction came to a standstill across the city, and workers at the World Trade Center site dismantled a crane and secured equipment. The mayor said there would be no effect on the opening of the Sept. 11 memorial on the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks.

Con Edison brought in hundreds of extra utility workers from around the country. While the foot of Manhattan is protected by a seawall and a network of pumps, Con Ed vice president John Mucci said the utility stood ready to turn off the power to about 6,500 customers there in the event of severe flooding.

Mucci said it could take up to three days to restore the power if the cables became drenched with saltwater, which can be particularly damaging.

The New York Stock Exchange has backup generators and can run on its own, a spokesman said.

Con Ed also shut down about 10 miles of steam pipes underneath the city to prevent explosions if they came in contact with cold water. The shutdown affected 50 commercial and residential customers around the city who use the pipes for heat, hot water and air conditioning.

Irene's path
Irene came ashore in North Carolina on Saturday morning, slightly weakened but still powerful, and was expected to roll up the densely populated Interstate 95 corridor. More than 8.3 million people live in New York City, and nearly 29 million in the metropolitan area.

A hurricane warning was issued for the city Friday afternoon, the first since Gloria in September 1985. That storm blew ashore on Long Island with winds of 85 mph and caused millions of dollars in damage, along with one death in New York.

Forecasters said Hurricane Irene will likely make landfall in New York late Saturday into Sunday as a Category 1 storm, or slightly weaker, reported NBC New York.

While Bloomberg strongly cautioned against staying put, he also said no one was going door-to-door to force residents out. And many apparently chose not to go.

City officials were worried that some people had not left public housing in the evacuation zones.

The city opened more than 90 evacuation shelters with room for about 70,000 people. But by early evening, only about 5,500 had checked in, officials said. NBC New York reported that most of those seeking shelter are from Queens.

The evacuation order went unheeded by many tenants at a large public housing complex in Brooklyn.

"Oh, forget Bloomberg. We ain't going anywhere," said Evelyn Burrus, 60. "Go to some shelter with a bunch of strangers and bedbugs? No way."

The area's three major airports ? LaGuardia, Kennedy and Newark Liberty ? closed at noon Saturday to arriving flights. Departing flights were shut down at 10 p.m.

Subway trains began grinding to a halt at noon.

The transit system won't reopen until at least Monday, after pumps remove water from flooded stations. The subways routinely flood during even ordinary storms and have to be pumped out.

The city's transit system carries about 5 million passengers on an average weekday. The last time it was seriously hobbled was an August 2007 rainstorm that disabled or delayed every one of the city's subway lines. It was also shut down after the 9/11 attacks and during a 2005 strike.

Many New Yorkers were left to hail taxis. To encourage cab-sharing and speed the evacuation, taxis switched to zone fares, meaning passengers were charged not for the mileage on the meter but according to which section of the city they were going to.

The lower level of the George Washington Bridge has been closed, according to NBC New York. The suspension bridge crosses the Hudson River, connecting Manhattan with New Jersey.

Boilers and elevators were shut down in public housing in evacuation areas to encourage tenants to leave and to prevent people from getting stuck in elevators if the power went out.

Some hotels were shutting off their elevators and air conditioners. Others had generators ready to go.

?Irene?s got a middle name, and it?s Global Warming,? environmental activist Bill McKibben wrote Thursday night in The Daily Beast. He argued that this year?s hot Atlantic Ocean temperatures and active spree of hurricanes ? coupled with droughts, floods and melting sea ice elsewhere on the globe ? are ?what climate change looks like in its early stages.?

Besides, ?what?s a ?tropical? storm doing heading for the snow belt?? asked McKibben. He also said the storm represented bad timing for the Obama administration?s favorable environmental impact statement on TransCanada?s proposed Keystone XL pipeline, which environmentalists label a danger to the Earth?s climate.

But not so fast, hurricane scientists say: Not only is it impossible to tie any single hurricane to global warming, but researchers are also still fiercely debating whether the changing climate is making ? or will make ? tropical cyclones either stronger or more frequent.

It?s also not even clear that hurricane seasons are getting worse over time, some researchers say. After all, New York City and Long Island have been hit by nine previous hurricanes from 1858 to 1991, according to NOAA records, including the disastrous 1938 storm known as the Long Island Express. And the deadliest hurricane in U.S. history struck 111 years ago ? the 1900 storm that killed an estimated 8,000 people in Galveston, Texas.

?I think the state of the science is such that you cannot link any singular event to global warming,? said Eric Blake, a hurricane specialist at the National Hurricane Center near Miami.

Besides, Blake added, ?there?s nothing new about a hurricane hitting the Northeast? ? even if it's rarer than a storm that whacks Florida or the Gulf Coast.

On the other hand, some climate researchers say they do see signs of rising global temperatures behind the Atlantic basin?s increase in especially destructive hurricanes since the mid-1990s.

?I think the evidence is fairly compelling that we?re seeing a climate change signal in the Atlantic,? said Kerry Emanuel, a professor of atmospheric science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Citing other recent trends of extreme weather, including hailstorms and catastrophic tornadoes, ?one begins to wonder, if you add all those up, maybe you are seeing a global warming effect.?

Still, Emanuel said, ?I would be reluctant myself to say anything about global warming and Irene.? For one thing, he said, Irene hasn?t been an especially unusual hurricane.

Of course, it?s not at all unusual for nonscientists to make sweeping conclusions based on the weather. Conservative pundits and politicians routinely cite winter blizzards as evidence that Al Gore is wrong, for example, while Rush Limbaugh argued? in 2007 that the National Hurricane Center must have misclassified one tropical storm that struck Canada ? on the grounds, the pundit said, that ?Nova Scotia is not the tropics.? (In fact, Nova Scotia has been hit by some full-blown hurricanes, such as Juan in 2003.)

Meanwhile, disasters such as 2005?s Hurricane Katrina have become routine parts of environmentalists? call to take action on global warming. Even if an individual storm can?t be blamed conclusively on global trends, they argue, these are the kinds of destructive storms we can expect to see more of as the temperatures rise.

?Yes, it is true that no single hurricane can be blamed on global warming,? Gore said in a speech to Sierra Club activists within weeks after Katrina. But, he said, ?it is also true that the science is extremely clear now, that warmer oceans make the average hurricane stronger.?

On the other hand, scientists can also point to more immediate causes that can make hurricanes stronger or more destructive. They include the El Ni?o/La Ni?a cycle, which can make Atlantic hurricanes either more or less frequent, as well as decades-long population movements that have placed vastly more people and property near the storm-vulnerable U.S. coastline.

Also, the conventional wisdom on hurricane seasons is that they go through natural, decades-long quiet and active cycles, with the Atlantic in the middle of an active cycle that started in 1995. (Emanuel disagrees with that view.) So while the past decade and a half have seen plenty of active hurricane seasons and deadly storms, so did the 1930s, ?40s and ?50s.

To be sure, recent hurricane seasons have hit some huge milestones.

The 2005 Atlantic season was the busiest since at least 1851, producing a record 28 storms ? including four hurricanes in the powerful Category 5, most notably Katrina. One of that season?s other Category 5 storms, Wilma, became the Atlantic basin?s most intense hurricane ever recorded before battering the Mexican coast and Florida.

The 2004 season included the first South Atlantic hurricane on record, which hit Brazil, while 2007?s Felix and Dean became the first two Atlantic storms to make landfall at Category 5 strength in a single season. And 2010 tied for the third-busiest season ever.

Then again, past decades have also had a bunch of ?mosts? and ?firsts.? Those include 1900?s Galveston storm along with the second-deadliest storm in U.S. history, the 1928 hurricane that killed an estimated 2,500 people in South Florida. And the 1933 hurricane season was the second-busiest on record in the Atlantic.

Colorado Remains 'Skinniest' State, Obesity Poll Finds (LiveScience.com)

If you were to walk the streets of, say, Denver, you'd probably see more thin people than overweight ones. Colorado continues to have the country's lowest obesity rate, according to the latest Gallup poll results.

Twenty percent of Colorado residents are obese, compared to 34 percent of the people in West Virginia, which has the highest obesity rate in the United States. Colorado and West Virginia had the same top and bottom spots, respectively, in the 2010 survey.

The results are based on interviews of 177,237 Americans, ages 18 and older, conducted in January through June. Participants reported their height and weight, from which the researchers calculated body mass index. For this survey, BMI scores of 30 or higher were considered obese.

The nation's obesity rate has held steady from last year at 26 percent. It is slightly higher than the 2008 rate (25.5 percent). Even so, many of the country's most-obese states continue to see a trend in the wrong direction. For instance, last year about 27.6 of Delaware residents were obese; this year it's 33.6 percent. While some states improved from last year none had an obesity rate lower than 20 percent, suggesting "residents throughout the entire country have much work to do to begin to tackle the nation's obesity problem," according to a Gallup statement.

The obesity survey results, part of the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, were weighted by gender, age, race, ethnicity in the case of Hispanic respondents, education, region, adults in the household, and phone status; in that way, Gallup said, the results should be nationally representative.

The full 2011 results should be available in early 2012, according to Gallup.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The nation's largest subway system began to shut down Saturday and the typically bustling city became unusually quiet as the first rain from Hurricane Irene fell on Manhattan.

Sidewalks, streets and bridges were nearly empty. Broadway shows were canceled. Businesses were closed and subway riders raced to catch the last trains. More 370,000 people in flood-prone areas have been told to get out ahead of the storm, the first time such an evacuation order was issued for the city.

At the Seventh Avenue station in Brooklyn's Park Slope section, more than a dozen people waited for one of the final subway runs.

"What I'm hoping is that they will run trains for the next hour or two to pick up the stragglers," said Kate Sandberg, who was headed to visit a friend.

The city had begged people for days not to wait until the last minute, and offered rides out of the danger area to residents who needed it. Nursing homes and hospitals started evacuating people Thursday.

It was the first time the city has shut down the entire subway system because of a natural disaster. Final subway and bus runs started at noon and it would take about eight hours before the entire transit system was shuttered, city officials said.

Several New York landmarks were inside the evacuation zone, including the ferries that take tourists to the Statue of Liberty. Construction stopped throughout the city, and workers at the site of the World Trade Center dismantled a crane and secured equipment.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said there would be no effect on the Sept. 11 memorial opening the day after the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

On Wall Street, sandbags were placed around subway grates nearest the East River, which is expected to surge as the hurricane nears New York.

Bloomberg warned those who decided to stay that elevators in public housing apartments would be shut down, and other high-rises also quit working so people don't get trapped if the power does go out. And the city's largest utility said it may cut off power to 6,500 customers in Lower Manhattan and Wall Street if the flooding gets bad. Turning off electricity ahead of time helps reduce the damage to power lines.

The transit system won't reopen until at least Monday, after pumps remove water from flooded subway stations. Even on a dry day, 13 million to 15 million gallons of water are removed from the tunnels deep underground. The Long Island Rail Road and other tracks were also being stopped.

The city's public transit system carries about 5 million passengers on an average weekday and officials didn't immediately report any problems during the final hours of the evacuation.

At the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge, stragglers scurried down the steps of the 4 and 5 lines to Brooklyn.

"This makes my day!" Randy Callo said as the doors closed on one of the final trains.

Salvatore Laudadio missed that train, and was sweating it out for one more ride to Brooklyn. He had already been on several buses and subway transfers.

"I got kind of a late start so I've been a little worried but I think this will all work out," he said, holding his bags.

Then the train rolled up and he got on.

The last time the system was seriously hobbled was an August 2007 rainstorm that disabled or delayed every one of the city's subway lines. It was also shut down after the 9/11 attacks and during a 2005 strike.

In Brooklyn's famed Coney Island, known for its boardwalk and amusement park, Bloomberg urged residents who needed to leave to get out right away.

"Staying behind is dangerous, staying behind is foolish, and it's against the law, and we urge everyone in the evacuation zones not to wait until gale-force winds," he said at a news conference. "The time to leave is right now."

Transit fares and tolls were waived in evacuated areas. Officials hoped most residents would stay with family and friends, and nearly 100 shelters, with a capacity of 71,000 people, were opened.

At 17 Battery Place, a 36-floor luxury rental building, Daryl Edelman and his wife, Regina, were leaving ? suitcase packed and their small white dog, Bitsy Bananas, tucked into a case.

"What the mayor did ? shutting down the transportation system ? is more dangerous than the storm," said Daryl Edelman, a comic book writer. "People could be left stranded ? especially the elderly."

Bloomberg said he hoped the evacuation wasn't necessary, but officials needed to be cautious with what is considered a dangerous storm.

"You can't prepare for the best case. You have to prepare for the worst case," he said.

Bloomberg weathered criticism after a Dec. 26 storm dumped nearly two feet of snow that seemed to catch officials by surprise. Subway trains, buses and ambulances got stuck in the snow, some for hours, and streets were impassable for days. Bloomberg ultimately called it an "inadequate and unacceptable" response.

Taxis in New York City were to switch from metered fares to zone fares, meaning riders would be charged by which part of the city they were being driven to, rather than how far they were being taken.

About 4,500 taxis were on the streets of Manhattan, which was just below an average day.

The five main New York City-area airports also closed at noon Saturday to arriving domestic and international flights. Three of them, Kennedy, LaGuardia and Newark Liberty, are among the nation's busiest.

Irene made landfall in North Carolina on Saturday, and was expected to roll up the Interstate 95 corridor reaching New York on Sunday. A hurricane warning was issued for the city Friday afternoon, the first since Gloria in 1985.

About 1.6 million people live in Manhattan, and about 6.8 million live in the city's other four boroughs.

In the past 200 years, New York has seen only a few significant hurricanes. In September 1821, a hurricane raised tides by 13 feet in an hour and flooded the southernmost tip of Manhattan in an area that now includes Wall Street and the World Trade Center memorial. In 1938, a storm dubbed the Long Island Express came ashore about 75 miles east of the city on neighboring Long Island and then hit New England, killing 700 people and leaving 63,000 homeless.

And in 1944, Midtown was flooded, where Times Square, Broadway theaters and the Empire State Building are located.

Lee sharp in beating Mets

PHILADELPHIA - Cliff Lee is such a perfectionist that he nitpicks even the minor stuff.

Lee threw seven sharp innings, John Mayberry Jr. and Hunter Pence each hit a two-run homer and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the New York Mets 10-0 Monday night.

The Phillies rocked Dillon Gee (11-5) to earn their major league-best 82nd win. They have a comfortable lead over Atlanta in pursuit of their fifth straight NL East title.

Lee (14-7) allowed three hits, walked three and struck out seven. The 2008 AL Cy Young Award winner is 4-0 with a 0.58 ERA this month.

Still, he isn't entirely satisfied.

"I walked a few guys and hit a batter. Not happy about that," Lee said. "But, they didn't cross the plate."

What bugs him the most about walks?

"It's just giving a guy a free base and a chance to score when he didn't earn it," Lee said.

David Herndon pitched the last two innings to complete the five-hitter and record Philadelphia's 17th shutout.

Lee, who gets standing ovations for almost anything he does, got yet another one after flying out to the left-field warning track in the seventh, just missing his third homer of the season.

"I thought it had a chance, but it was just a flyout," he said.

Gee gave up eight runs and seven hits in 3 2-3 innings, increasing his ERA from 3.92 to 4.37. He is 4-5 since a 7-0 start.

The Mets have lost four in a row and 16 of 21.

"We're not hitting and not pitching," manager Terry Collins said. "That's a bad combination."

The Phillies scored their first eight runs with two outs. They got three on three straight two-out hits in the second. Pence led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. He scored on Wilson Valdez's RBI single down the first-base line. After Lee singled, Shane Victorino lined a two-run triple into the right-field corner.

Lee took an awkward stride around third and the Mets appealed that he missed the bag, but umpire Jim Reynolds called him safe. Replays showed Lee touched the inside corner of the base.

Mayberry connected to make it 5-0 in the third. He's been on a tear since his latest recall from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on July 5. Mayberry, a fourth outfielder and pinch-hitter, is batting .318 (27 for 85) with eight homers and 26 RBIs in 30 games.

"I've obviously made changes with my stance and approach," Mayberry said. "Additionally, it doesn't hurt to get more at-bats."

Mayberry walked with two outs and the bases loaded to force in another run in the fourth. Ryota Igarashi replaced Gee and allowed a two-run single to Carlos Ruiz that put the Phillies up 8-0.

Pence took Igarashi deep in the sixth for his fifth homer since coming to Philadelphia in a trade with Houston on July 29.

The Phillies played without shortstop Jimmy Rollins. The 2007 NL MVP was placed on the disabled list with a strained groin. All-Star third baseman Placido Polanco was activated from the DL and went 2 for 4.

Mets shortstop Ruben Tejada made an outstanding, over-the-shoulder running catch on a foul pop by Chase Utley in the third. Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard made a similar catch on a foul pop by Scott Hairston in the fourth. Tejada ran into the tarp on his, while Howard slid before reaching the railing.

Notes: Mets SS Jose Reyes will begin a rehab assignment at Double-A Binghamton on Thursday. He's been sidelined by a strained left hamstring. ... Mets starter Mike Pelfrey will remain in the rotation after the team considering trying him out as a closer the rest of the season. ... A crowd of 45,783 was the 201st straight sellout at Citizens Bank Park, including postseason play. ... Phillies LF Raul Ibanez wasn't in the lineup because of a sore groin. ... Lee fanned Angel Pagan in the third for his 186th strikeout, setting a career best. ... Pagan later left with a stomach virus. ... Pence tied a career high with four runs scored. ... Vance Worley (8-1) pitches for the Phillies against Jonathon Niese (11-10) on Tuesday night. Worley is 2-1 with a 3.52 ERA in four games against the Mets. Niese is 3-3 with a 2.82 ERA in seven games vs. Philadelphia.

We were also honored to also to have fifth generation pizzaiola,Peppe Starita from Pizzeria Statita a Marterdei in Naples, crafting pizza for us only found at his restaurant in Italy.

The History of Pizza

The word pizza, as it is currently spelled, was used to describe both sweet and salty pies in the Middle Ages, but took the form that we are now familiar with in pre-Renaissance Naples, a large city in central Italy. Poor peasants used their limited ingredients -flour and water, creating a bread dough, stretched and baked to make a seasoned, flat bread.

It?s said that the pizza that made Naples world famous is the Pizza Margherita in Italian or Pizza Margarita to the rest of the world. A local man and the town baker called Esposito first baked it in 1889. He created the pizza in honor of a visit to Naples by the Queen of Italy, Queen Margherita.

To make the pizza a little more patriotic-looking, Esposito used red tomato sauce, white mozzarella cheese and green basil leaves as toppings to follow the colors of the Italian flag. Queen Margherita loved the pizza, and what eventually became Pizza Margherita has since become an international standard. Neapolitan pizza is still widely regarded as the best in the world, probably because of the fresh ingredients available to Neapolitan pizzerias: herbs, garlic, and tomatoes grown in the rich volcanic ash of Vesuvius, and fresh mozzarella from water buffalo milk.

Pizzerias in this era usually included a large brick oven, a marble counter where the crust was prepared, and a shelf lined with ingredients. Contemporary Neapolitan pizzerias are prepared in the same way they were 100 years ago. The large brick ovens make the pizzerias uncomfortably hot in every season except winter, but the unique flavor of these brick-oven pizzas is unmatched. Pizzaioli (makers of pizza) often assemble the entire pizza on a marble counter right before the customer?s eyes.

Today, the Associazione Pizzaiuoli Napoletani (the Association of Neapolitan Pizza) maintains strict member guidelines for ingredients, dough, and cooking. This elite organization maintains that pizza dough must be made only with flour, natural yeast or brewers yeast, salt and water. Dough must be kneaded by hand or mixers which do not cause the dough to overheat, and the dough must be punched down and shaped by hand. Also, only wood-burning, bell-shaped brick ovens are permitted in pizzerias that belong to this organization. The pizza must be cooked on the surface of the oven (often made of volcanic stone), and not in any pan or container, with oven temperatures reaching at least 400-430? C (750-800? F). These ovens often have to heat up for hours before the first pizza is cooked.
