Rainbow PUSH Responds to Mayor?s Burge Apology

At Rainbow PUSH headquarters Saturday morning, a number of men took the stage, each of them with a story of wrongful conviction and police torture.

?I was in hell,? said Anthony Holmes, who testified against convicted former CPD Commander Jon Burge during Burge?s trial.?? In the early 70s Holmes said? Burge personally coerced a confession by unspeakable means, ?We?ve been tortured, we?ve been suffocated we?ve been almost killed by this man and they?re still helping him, and we can?t get no help.?

On Thursday, Mayor Rahm Emanuel took one step, offering an apology to those who were tortured under Burge.

But Rainbow PUSH leaders want more than that, calling for a commission with subpoena power to call witnesses and make recommendations on compensating the men who were torured and wrongfully convicted. They also want City Council to set up a 20 million dollar victims fund.Capture
