What?s the worst piece of business advice you ever got?
Somewhere along the way, a well-meaning mentor or colleague likely said it. In my case my mother, no doubt wishing to protect me from dependence and disappointment, said:
?If you want it done right, do it yourself.?
Contained in that one statement, and repeated often, was the belief was the others were inherently unreliable. I took that belief from home to college to my corporate career and finally into?self-employment.
Along the way, of course, I got what I was taught to expect: others will let you down. So I did almost everything myself. Even when I hired a website guy, I learned HTML and WordPress, in case he didn?t deliver (as his predecessor hadn?t).
But over time a funny thing happened: the exceptions.?I had a brilliant stage manager who supported me during a play I directed in college. Exhausted, I realized at the last minute I?d forgotten to order supplies for opening night. No worries, she said; I took care of all that already.
It was a lightning bolt moment!
Later I learned to rely on assistants, bookkeepers, team members. And that?it?s only with and through others that I achieve my highest outcomes.
So that well-intentioned advice is transformed. :)
My colleague and long-time Reliable Director of Marketing, Andy Riegler Andrews shares his worst piece of business advice below. But first:

Andy shares:
The worst piece of business advice I ever got was to put my nose to?the grindstone and work my way up, because ?great work will get?noticed and rewarded.??
?It won?t. That completely puts you at the mercy of people who don?t?have a stake in your success.?
?You have to set your own goals and pursue them directly instead of?relying on someone else to make it happen for you.?
