Late-night poll: Did your Nexus 7 ship yet?

Nexus 7

July 19, the day that all the early orders of the Nexus 7 were to ship, has come and gone. According to Google, everyone who ordered on or before July 11 should either have their tablet in their hot little hands (they're even showing up in Canada), or it should be in transit. We're hoping this is the case, because the shipping of these things has turned our hair a bit grey. Everyone wants one, and because we're Android nerds, we want them now, and Google can't get them out the door fast enough. Yeah, it's Google's first time shipping out a device at launch, and selling your wares as fast as you can make them is always a good problem to have, but it's easy to feel that way when you're not the one waiting for the delivery truck.

So did you get yours? Is it on the way? Or are you still waiting to hear anything about it? Tell us in tonight's poll, and discuss away in the comments.

More or Less in Family Ministry | Growing Kids Ministry

I looked at my front window one sunny day in June to see a trail of kids walking, skipping and shuffling along the sidewalk in front of my house.? My eye caught the face of a girl who attends our church.? I rushed onto the front porch just in time to hear her say to a friend, ?I know the people who live here.? Really, I do.?? I called her name and waved.? Delighted, Katie* ran over for a hug and proudly strutted back to the line.?? I?ve gotten to know Katie pretty well during my time in the ministry.? I?ve gotten to know her family too.

  • Recently, I had many a phone conversations with Katie?s mom about a possible teenage pregnancy in the family.
  • Katie?s older sister comes to my house every other week for some hang-out time and casual mentoring.
  • Her grandma just emailed me to ask if she could bring a birthday cake for Katie to our mid-week program.
  • Katie?s cousin stops in occasionally to our house for dinner and a cooking lesson, usually with board games afterwards.

Family Ministry Means Being a Family

My husband and I don?t do this stuff because family ministry is our heart?s burden.? We do it because that?s how the church is supposed to work.? Family ministry isn?t about creating programs to meet the needs of every family member.? It?s about being a family.? It?s about being a community.? It?s about being a part of each other?s lives in a way that?s authentic and meaningful.

Nice looking family!

Family Ministry is not a new concept.? You see a beautiful picture of the kind of community God envisioned for his people in Zechariah 8:4-5:

4?This is what the?Lord?Almighty says: ?Once again men and women of ripe old age will sit in the streets of Jerusalem,?each of them with cane in hand because of their age.?5?The city streets will be filled with boys and girls playing there.??

This happened just last night at our Summer Blast program.? ?The thing I love most about VBS is how it pulls a congregation together.? People serving as small group leaders, people running games, people doing crafts and projects.? And old people, some with canes in hand, sitting along the edges of the gym, watching the kids running to and fro, sipping their coffee and smiling.

Brand new parents, who had never stepped inside the doors of our church before, were playing right alongside their kids, gluing hearts onto paper plates and clapping to the music.?? The teenagers from the youth group were running cookies and little napkins out to the snack table and filling up water balloons as fast as their fingers could tie.? Young kids were greeting new guests and telling them ?I?ll be your friend!? I?ll show you where to go and stuff?.

That?s family ministry.? ?It?s about being a family.? It?s about being a community.? It?s about being a part of each other?s lives in a way that says, ?You belong.? You matter.? You?re important here.?

What Does Family Ministry Look Like?

Ever since the rise of the ?Family Ministry? movement, I?ve tried to determine how it plays out in our church.? I?ve realized it plays out in ways like these:

  • Watching fireworks with a couple families from the church and a few friends from the community.? Chatting and wrestling with our kids the way people do when they are gathered around a living room
  • Hosting a Story Time in the Park to reach out to stay at home parents and grandparents who are looking for a community where they can belong
  • Running into a grandma that attends Story Time in the Park at the grocery store and stopping to ask how her weekend was
  • Inviting one of the youth group girls over as a Mother?s Helper
  • Taking one of the youth group guys (this was my husband on this one) on a two hour drive to Pittsburgh so theycould see the Lecrae concert together
  • Revamping the entire Sunday School program so everyone, 2 years old and up, is learning the same Scripture passage each week, making spiritual conversations a little easier to start
  • Going to my friend Michelle?s house for a Coke and to hear her wisdom, Titus 2 style
  • Showing up in droves to help a family move
  • Handing my crying baby over to a small group leader on Wednesday night (hey, she asked!) so I can grab a few more props out of the storage closet
  • Going to a summer bonfire at another families house and learning what?s important to their family as we sit around and talk
  • Laying blankets next to each other at the church softball games and talking with other moms as the kids run in the field nearby

This is stuff families just naturally do.? This is stuff the church should naturally do.

I agree this method isn?t very systematic, but it may just be what people need.? Sure, a child dedication class can be helpful (we started one this year).? But I think the friendships formed during the class are even more helpful.? I?m thinking?less programs and more community.?? Less checklists and more chatting.? Less pressure and more enjoying the moment. ?Less trying to think of new ideas and more of just talking to moms and dad (I?ll admit having kids really gives you an in on this one!)

You?re Important in This Family

When you?re a part of a family, you?ve got a role to play.? Have you ever checked out the Duggar?s show?? Every kid has a jurisdiction in the house.? And they take serious ownership of that job.?? They know they have responsibilities that come with being a part of a family.? Perhaps you too remember the delightful sticker chore charts mom used to hang on the fridge?? I wonder if we?ve stolen something from the people of God by catering to their every need instead of treating them like part of the family.? That?s my dream for family ministry.? That it will become less of ?ministering to the different members of the family? and more of ?becoming a family?.

How about you?? What?s your dream for family ministry?

ShoreTel Expands Video, IM Capabilities in UC Platform | Kingisepp

ShoreTel is expanding the video conferencing
and instant messaging capabilities of its unified communications platform,
leveraging open standards to help businesses increase employee productivity.

The company?s ShoreTel 13 software release,
announced July 17, takes advantage of new capabilities within ShoreTel
Communicator, the platform?s call manager application, to broaden the video
collaboration and IM features.

The updated ShoreTel Communicator enables
users to participate in room-based video conferences using desktops or laptops
that support the H.264 industry standard. ShoreTel already has begun
integrating its offering with systems from LifeSize Communications, Logitech?s
video communications business, and Polycom, and is working to become certified
with other vendors, according to Jeff Ridley, ShoreTel?s director of product
management.

The use of the H.264 protocol is part of
ShoreTel?s larger embrace of open standards, including Extensible Messaging and
Presence Protocol (XMPP) and Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), to make unified
communications (UC) more ubiquitous, Ridley told eWEEK.

?With this release [of ShoreTel 13], we are
emphasizing the openness of the platform,? he said.

Video collaboration is increasingly important
as enterprises look for ways to improve employee productivity, improve
communications and reduce corporate costs, such as travel expenses. Users now
are looking to be able to leverage the systems they have to communicate with
others, regardless of whose technology is being used, Ridley said.

By having ShoreTel 13 support the H.264
standard, users can participate in room-based video conferences through their
desktop PCs or notebooks. Users, through their PCs, can dial into the
room-based system and they become part of the video conference.

?What the world didn?t need is another video
standard,? Kevin Gavin, ShoreTel?s chief marketing officer, told eWEEK.

It made more sense to leverage H.264 and SIP
to give users the capability to easily connect into video conferences from
their PCs, Gavin said. ShoreTel leverages multiple open interfaces that enable
easy integration of third-party applications from video collaboration vendors.

The simplicity of the solution is a key
differentiator for ShoreTel, he said. Other vendors, like Cisco Systems, may
also offer similar capabilities, but they tend to be more complex and difficult
to use.

ShoreTel also is expanding the instant
messaging capability to all users by enabling IM in ShoreTel Communicator for
Personal Access at no extra cost. Before, the IM capability had only been
available in the company?s Professional version, Ridley said. Businesses
through ShoreTel Communicator also can use standards-based IM servers, including
ShoreTel?s own XMPP IM server or Microsoft?s Lynch, Gavin said.

Instant messaging is becoming a key
form of communication for employees, making it important to increase access to
it, Ridley said.

?We see it as basic as the phone to
communications,? he said.

ShoreTel 13 also includes enhancements to SIP
interfaces, extending enterprise contact center agent capabilities enabled from
SIP trunking service providers.

Business Foundations sets 'glocal' agenda for running WA ...

Business Foundations, which last month won a tender to operate Western Australia?s Innovation Centre at Technology Park, Bentley, has set a ?glocal? agenda to spur entrepreneurship and innovation.

It wants to stem the state?s brain drain, focusing on the local aspect, while simultaneously tapping synergies with the U.S., a key global lifeline that gives Australian startups generous funding and expertise, besides provides access to the world?s largest market.

We talk all the time about Australia?s brain drain of start-up talent going offshore; well, the same is true of WA. You have to have the support and resources for local innovators to help them develop their ideas and markets,? Executive Director Phil Kemp told Anthill.

We plan to expand links between the United States and the innovation community in WA, as the U.S. represents about 27% of foreign investment into Australia, and there is strong interest from areas like Silicon Valley,? he said. ?The team we are bringing together at the WA Innovation Centre have the contacts, expertise and hands-on experience to help innovators turn their ideas into commercially viable enterprises or products.?

Business Foundations is itself a storied organisation that has nurtured entrepreneurs for the past two decades. Its own establishment is a tribute to entrepreneurship ? sandal makers in the Fremantle Markets pushed for its formation after receiving rare mentorship from a Murdoch University student. Its first business incubator was run from the Old Fremantle Prison.

Our skills lie in giving business owners and would-be business operators the management training and assistance to help protect them from the early pitfalls and booby traps that most new firms face,? Kemp said. ?We have a proven track record of working in the SME sector and we are involved in Perth?s angel investor and tech start-up ecosystem.?

So, who is the guy at the centre of the innovation program?

It?s not the smart guy making millions of dollars working from a computer in their garage, Kemp pointed out in a bid to alter broad perceptions. He or she is more commonly ?a researcher, scientist or an industry expert with a cutting-edge idea and absolutely no idea how to test the market, secure the intellectual property, commercialise the innovation, develop the network that will support the venture and find the commercial backing to make it a reality,? he said. Last year, the Innovation Centre empowered over 1,000 such innovators with its range of services.

Kemp says his non-profit organisation will work with new and existing innovative businesses to identify opportunities for introducing innovation to the market.

The innovation space in Australia lacks a clear connection between the people who generate good ideas and the people who will pay for them. What is required in Australia for innovation to quickly gain momentum is a better way to identify the market potential of ideas and then connect the innovators to potential customers,? said Kemp.

The key intermediary in this process is the businesses that are in dire need for innovation in order to survive, and investors scouting for the next big thing.

ICWA will connect Western Australian businesses that require innovative technologies and processes to remain globally competitive to the people that are developing innovative technology and process solutions,? said Kemp.

The Innovation Centre will focus on a number of sectors including mining services, technology, manufacturing and services.

Another issue Kemp seeks to address is early market validation.

Without a customer, an innovation is just a good idea and what you don?t want is someone to waste two or three years muddling around before they finally get to the potential market only to find the customer isn?t interested and doesn?t want the product,? he said.

Consequently, Innovation Centre wants to get businesses talking to potential customers sufficiently early, and attain validation before speeding up the process of implementation of innovation.

Business Innovations also operates the Small Business Centre South West Metro and Enterprise Connect. It has offices in Perth, Fremantle, Kwinana and Rockingham.

Heidi Golledge: Did Wall Street Punish Yahoo's Marissa Mayer for ...

Yahoo stock got a boost Monday night after it was announced that former Google executive Marissa Mayer would become the company?s new CEO. Unfortunately, the stock lost its gains later, after the media focused its attention on the fact that Mayer is pregnant and due to give birth to her first child during her first few months on the job.

As of yet, Yahoo?s stock price has not rebounded since Mayer?s appointment. While there are many reasons investors may be wary of Yahoo, it still begs the question: ?Why are women not allowed to parent and lead a business??

Wall Street should stand behind working mothers. If it did, it would see great returns on the investment.

The Yahoo board didn?t see Mayer?s pregnancy as an issue, and neither should anyone else.

While some investors erroneously assume Mayer will be too distracted with motherhood to lead such a large tech company, my experience suggests that she will come back stronger and more focused than ever after giving birth.

As a mother of two and also the CEO and co-founder of two growing tech companies with more than 200 employees, I have confidence in Mayer?s ability to multitask mommying along with profits and loss.

During my career I have known many women who have returned to work after having a child only to be more dedicated. In fact, I see it as the rule rather than the exception.

I co-founded my first company when my youngest daughter was only 6 months old. Although that meant running home in the early days for quick feedings, both the company, CyberCoders, and my daughter were able to thrive.

Now that CyberCoders and my daughters are all teenagers, they demand extra attention ? but multi-tasking has its advantages, as leading a business and negotiating with a teenager take many of the same skills.

Through it all, my two daughters have been the biggest driving force behind my success. Working made me more organized, attentive and committed to my career in order to provide the best life I could for my kids. Each day, I am mindful of how I treat everyone including our clients, users and our employees and work hard in an effort to be a role model for my children.

When you are a mom and a breadwinner, the stakes are higher. When I was young, I never wanted to be put in the situation in which I could not control my own family?s outcome. I decided long ago to create my own story and to make sure the businesses I create leaves the same legacy. Perform your job well and you upgrade your life ? and, as a parent, the lives of your children. Doing so gives parents the ability to give their children opportunities to experience the world and save for college.

Anne-Marie Slaughter?s recent cover story for The Atlantic ?Why Women Still Can?t Have it All? opened a floodgate of discussion among women in the workplace. Slaughter proposed that in this current day, age and economy, it is tougher than ever for women to be in the boardroom and the kitchen. The backlash was resounding.

I would ask ? as did many women who read Slaughter?s piece ? why are we still having this discussion? No one asks a man in the workplace about his home life. No one assumes a married father with children will be distracted from his responsibilities in the boardroom. They just assume he has someone at home handling those issues.

At the end of the day, it?s up to Marissa Mayer and the board of Yahoo to decide if she can do the job ? not the media and Wall Street nay-sayers. I have a feeling the 20th employee of Google, who helped make that company what it is today, is more than up to the challenge. The coming months and years will be an amazing time for Marissa, her family and, most likely, the stock holders at Yahoo.

Heidi Golledge is the Founder and CEO of Cyber Coders and CareerBliss, two tech companies based in Irvine, Calif.
