Landslide kills 25 in southern Philippines

(AP) ? A landslide buried dozens of people Thursday at a small-scale gold mining site in the southern Philippines, leaving at least 25 dead months after government officials warned miners that the mountain above them was guaranteed to crumble.

The landslide struck around 3:00 a.m. (2100 GMT Wednesday), when most residents were asleep. Aside from those confirmed dead, more than 100 people are believed to be buried in the rubble in Napnapan village in Pantukan township, Compostela Valley provincial Gov. Arturo Uy said.

Army Lt. Col. Camilo Ligayo said about 120 soldiers were heading to the area to help dig for survivors and bodies.

Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Ramon Paje said he had warned residents and local officials last year of a fissure on a ridge of the mountain that geologists said was "highly susceptible" to landslides that could occur anytime.

"We were absolute that it will give in," he told The Associated Press. "It was a 100 percent warning. We told them it's just a matter of time. ... This is it. This is what happened this morning."

Thousands of poor Filipinos dig and pan for gold in the area, hoping to strike it rich despite the dangers of largely unregulated mining. The tunnels are often unstable and landslides and accidents are common.

Saul Pingoy, a local resident, told DZMM radio that he was sleeping in a house about 50 yards (meters) away from the landslide when he felt the ground shake and heard rocks falling on roofs. It wasn't raining at the time, he added.

"The mountain itself was already sending a warning with falling rocks. That's why we were woken up ... and then it collapsed," he said. "Big boulders and the ground from the mountain covered the area."

Compostela Valley province is on the main southern Philippine island of Mindanao, where flash floods triggered by a tropical storm killed more than 1,250 people in December. Gov. Uy said miners and their families had been warned that the heavy rains made the small tunnels that honeycomb the hills and mountains more dangerous.

Uy said authorities advised residents as early as Dec. 16 when Tropical Storm Washi was sweeping across Mindanao to leave their tunnels, "but unfortunately some have not responded to our advisories."

Hundreds of residents near the site of Thursday's slide were forced to evacuate last April after a landslide killed about 20 people.

Uy said it was difficult to monitor the "extremely high risk area" because it is so remote and some residents who were evacuated in April may have "sneaked back."

Paje said the April slide occured in Kingking village beside Napnapan. Both villages are part of a 74,130-acre (30,000-hectare) watershed that has been scarred by landslides over the years.

He said the fissure discovered last year has been aggravated by rainwater saturation and continuous diggings by the miners.

He urged local officials to stop giving small-scale mining permits, now estimated to number about 3,000 all around the watershed.

"Had they listened to us and stopped the entry (of miners), there would have been no casualty," he said.

Video: LA arson suspect remains jailed

BRIAN WILLIAMS, anchor: In this country, if you've been following the news from the West Coast the past few days then you know this was welcomed news this morning. They woke up to find out there were no fires in LA overnight. A four-day arson spree stopped cold after police arrested the man they say was behind it all. Tonight we're learning more about his possible motive and about how he was finally stopped. We get our report tonight from NBC 's Mike Taibbi in Hollywood .

MIKE TAIBBI reporting: When 24-year- old German national Harry Burkhart was pulled over at 3 AM Monday he reportedly said, 'I hate America .' What is certain is that officials see him at this point as a suspect who acted alone in setting some 52 car fires over four nights, many of those fires scorching adjacent apartment buildings where thousands lived and slept.

Sheriff LEE BACA (Los Angeles County Sheriff): A serial arsonist, I believe has been caught.

TAIBBI: Here's how authorities say he was caught. When this surveillance video was released by police Sunday night, an immigration official recognized Burkhart . He said the German national had been very angry at a recent hearing about his mother's pending deportation. And everything known about Burkhart was immediately circulated to the huge task force working the case.

Chief CHARLIE BECK (Los Angeles Police Department): Thousands of law enforcement officials had the information when they needed to have it, and that's what led to this arrest.

TAIBBI: And who actually pulled Burkhart over here on Sunset Boulevard ? An attorney working as a volunteer reserve deputy sheriff for $1 a year. Applause at a press conference for that volunteer deputy Shervin Lalezary .

Mr. SHERVIN LALEZARY: Thank you to the two officers who backed me up.

TAIBBI: During another deportation hearing today, Burkhart 's mother, Dorothy , blurted out at one point, 'Where's my son? He's mentally ill.' Her son remains in jail without bail; and the apartment they shared is now vacant, within shouting distance of several of the fires Burkhart is alleged to have set. Gator Bait: Buckeyes Fall To Florida 24-17

JACKSONVILLE (AP) ? Florida?s special teams came up big in the Gator Bowl, scoring twice as the Gators beat Ohio State 24-17 on Monday in a game between Urban Meyer?s old team and his future one.

Andre Debose returned a kickoff 99 yards ? the longest scoring play in bowl history ? and Chris Rainey blocked a punt that was returned for a touchdown.

The speedsters helped the Gators (7-6) avoid their first losing season since 1979 and pick up some much-needed momentum after losing six of their previous eight games.

Ohio State (6-7) finished below .500 for the first time since 1986. The Buckeyes can take solace in knowing that Meyer, who officially takes over at Ohio State this week, will make it a priority to improve special teams. Meyer did that in his six seasons in Gainesville, and Rainey and Debose were two of his most prized recruits.

Ohio State fell to 0-10 in bowl games against teams from the Southeastern Conference. Yes, the Buckeyes beat Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl last year. But that victory was vacated.

The latest loss had everything to do with Florida?s speed.

The Gators dominated the defensive line of scrimmage. They had a season-high six sacks, harassing Braxton Miller on nearly every passing play. Jaye Howard and Sharrif Floyd were disruptive all afternoon.

Florida had similar success the last time it played Ohio State. The Gators were dominant on defense in a 41-14 win in the 2007 Bowl Championship Series national title game in Glendale, Ariz.

Debose and Rainey proved to be the difference in the much-hyped rematch that centered around Meyer.

Just after Ohio State tied the game at 7 on Miller?s 5-yard pass to DeVier Posey in the second quarter, Debose took the kickoff, made one cut to the outside and went untouched for his third career special teams touchdown. The Buckeyes never got close enough to even swipe at him, let alone make the tackle.

Florida was up 14-10 at halftime and essentially put the game out of reach on the opening possession of the third.

Rainey came off the left end and blocked Ben Buchanan?s punt. Seldom-used linebacker Graham Stewart scooped it up at the 14-yard line and scored the first touchdown of his career.

It was Rainey?s sixth blocked punt of his career, breaking the school and SEC record.

Rainey also ran for 71 yards on a warm and sunny day in Jacksonville. John Brantley completed 16 of 22 passes for 132 yards, with a touchdown and an interception. He had a 17-yard strike to Deonte Thompson in the first.

Jeff Demps added 31 yards on the ground.

Ohio State wasn?t nearly as effective.

Miller completed 18 of 23 passes for 162 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran 15 times for 20 yards. He completed an 11-yard TD pass to Jordan Hall with 57 seconds remaining. The Buckeyes failed to recover an onside kick, and Florida ran out the clock for its sixth bowl victory in the last seven years.

Ohio State?s Dan Herron ran for 82 yards, but also had a fumble. Posey finished with five catches for 37 yards.

Miller, a freshman, gives Meyer an experienced and improving quarterback for next season. The Buckeyes won?t be bowl eligible, though.

The NCAA hit Ohio State with a one-year bowl ban and additional penalties last month for violations stemming from players who exchanged jerseys, rings and other Buckeyes memorabilia for cash and tattoos. The violations cost coach Jim Tressel his job, and the Buckeyes turned things over to interim coach Luke Fickell.

The Buckeyes lost four in a row to end the season.

Chinese bus driver infected with bird flu dies

BEIJING (AP) ? A Chinese bus driver who tested positive for the H5N1 bird flu virus died Saturday in a city bordering Hong Kong, health officials said, in the country's first reported case of the disease in humans in 18 months.

The man surnamed Chen died in the wealthy southern city of Shenzhen, provincial health officials said. Shenzhen is separated by a small river from Hong Kong, where thousands of birds have been slaughtered after two were confirmed to have the virus last week.

During the month prior to his fever, Chen, 39, apparently had no direct contact with poultry and did not travel out of Shenzhen, a metropolis of 10 million people.

H5N1 rarely infects humans and usually only those who come into close contact with diseased poultry. But among those infected, nearly 60 percent die, and scientists are closely watching the virus for any signs it is becoming more easily transmissible from human to human.

Chen developed a fever on Dec. 21 and was hospitalized on Dec. 25, city and provincial authorities said in a statement. Health Ministry experts confirmed on Saturday that he was infected with H5N1, the provincial health department said.

The Guangdong health department also said 120 people who had close contact with Chen have not developed any abnormal symptoms.

The Ministry of Health has informed the World Health Organization about the case, local authorities said.

WHO says globally there have been 336 human deaths from 573 confirmed bird flu cases since 2003. Of these, 40 cases were in China, 26 of which were fatal.

Chen's death comes a week after two dead birds tested positive for the virus in Hong Kong.

More than 19,000 birds at a Hong Kong market were slaughtered and imports and sales of live poultry were banned for three weeks after a chicken carcass tested positive for H5N1. Lab tests later confirmed that an Oriental magpie robin found dead on Dec. 17 was also infected.

China's last reported human case of H5N1 was in June 2010. A pregnant 22-year-old woman from central Hubei province died after being exposed to sick and dead poultry.
