Mumford & Sons announce rescheduled tour dates

NEW YORK (AP) ? Mumford & Sons are heading back on tour.

The Grammy-winning band announced Monday that it has rescheduled dates in Dallas; Woodlands, Texas; and New Orleans. The upcoming shows will include bassist Ted Dwane, who received treatment for a blood clot on his brain two weeks ago. The band postponed shows as a result, including a headlining gig at the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival.

The foursome's "The Full English Tour" will begin Aug. 26 in Toronto. It wraps Sept. 20 in Bonner Springs, Kan. Other stops include Milwaukee, Atlanta and Simpsonville, S.C.

The folk-rock band's sophomore album, "Babel," won album of the year at this year's Grammy Awards.

Richard Dawkins Made A Video About Internet Memes - Business ...

Evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins introduced this year's Saatchi and Saatchi New Directors' showcase in Cannes last week, an event that focused on the theme of memes. ??

The choice was fitting since Dawkins coined the word "meme" in 1976, long before the word was adapted for the Internet age.?

Dawkins original meaning of the term meme ? not far-off from its meaning today ? was described in his book "The Selfish Gene," where he refers to it as the cultural equivalent of DNA, or anything that is imitated or "spreads like a virus" around a culture through natural selection.?

To kick off the event, the professor created an auto-tuned song about Internet memes, which concluded with him playing the the electronic clarinet. The video, of course, has all the ingredients to become its own Internet meme. ?

Watch the trippy video below. (The song starts around 5-minute mark).?

Snowden has ticket to Cuba, may go to Venezuela: Russian reports

The already-bizarre saga of blind Chinese activist Chen Guangcheng is approaching the plot of pulpy spy novel. Chen, who faces imminent departure from NYU after completing a year-long fellowship, was allegedly spied on using an iPad that was given to him as a gift upon arriving at the Manhattan university. NYU Law School professor Jerome Cohen told Reuters on Friday morning that the wife of Chinese activist Bob Fu provided Chen with an iPad and iPhone, on which NYU staff later discovered "software?that made it possible to track the dissident's movements and communications. ...

Kiley Marissa: guest post: balanced health by kelsey

Hello every one! I was so excited to have Kiley ask me to do a blog post about beauty, especially focusing on health and fitness. I am so passionate about having a healthy balanced lifestyle because I am a recovered girl who once had an eating disorder. This Eating disorder controlled me and my life since I was 8 years old. In order to be healed I had to learn to have balance in life. I think so often as women we get obsessed with our body image and we get an all or nothing perspective on life. I know that I had a list of good and bad foods, a workout routine that was so intense that I had no time for any social life or school, and a negative body image that told me I would never reach perfection. This is where we get lost, we try to attain this perfection that is unattainable and therefore are left with lives that are discontent and joyless.?

I know that the media, magazines, Internet and the world has created an image that they say is ?perfect? but the problem is that we are designed differently. We cannot change our metabolism, height, hair color, skin color and so on. I was at a bachelorette party this weekend and we were out on the town all dressed up and couldn?t help but notice how different we all were. One of the girls had come up to me and said, ?I have been struggling with bulimia for years now, but thank you for being so honest with your story because to me you are the girl I had always pictured as having the perfect look and life. ?I was taken aback because to me , I had never been perfect enough for myself. The funniest part about this whole conversation was that when I didn?t know her and had just seen her in a crowd, her beauty stood out and I thought she was a stunning girl. Isnt that crazy how each of us want to be something else? My favorite thing about that conversation was that this gorgeous girl knew she had a problem and was doing something to fix it. She was deciding to start living life to the fullest and in a healthy way.

The way to have a balanced life is to stop OBSESSING. That means you will need to eat , you will need to exercise but fit it into your lifestyle where it isn?t controlling you. You know that it isn?t controlling you when you are able to skip a day or two of your workout or when you don?t feel bad about having a treat or two a day. I was at the point in my life a few years back, when I couldn?t go one day without a long workout. Not getting a workout in meant that I would be crabby and not eat all day. As you can see , this is when there is no balance in life. Now I try to get a workout in 3-5 days a week ( some weeks I don?t get one in, other weeks I workout 6 days). A workout helps clear my mind but I am still joyful when I miss one. I like to do 20-40 minutes of cardio and some weight lifting at each session. Weight lifting helps your body burn fat for hours after your workout! I?m all about burning fat and not having to workout all the time My workout varies from running, to rollerblading , sculpt yoga or a workout class. Make getting exercise fun!?

Eating healthy and enough is also very important. What many girls don?t realize is that under eating is actually doing negative affects on you and will cause weight gain in the future. Now I?m not saying eat McDonalds 4 times a day but eating small meals 4-6 times a day is really healthy. It speeds up your metabolism so that your body is constantly burning calories and fat which gives you more energy and lean muscle. Focus on eating ?CLEAN,? this means protein ( eggs, meat, fish, lentils), Veggies, fruits ( see this as your sweets), fats ( avocadoes, Nuts), and carbs ( rice, beans, whole wheat breads). There is always room for a healthy dessert. Find healthy versions of your favorite desserts and have a baking night with your girls friends! Eating this way will make you feel satisfied but not heavy or bloated. Don?t limit yourself because then your body will crave those things and then you end up overeating them. Its all about moderation.?

Hope I could encourage on your way to a healthy lifestyle. Any questions about eating disorders, meal plans, and workout routines, pageants and beauty, I would love to talk!?

Email me at www.Kelseyanngiles@gmail.com or facebook me at Kelsey Giles.?

Hugs and kisses, Kels

US factory boss held hostage by workers in Beijing

BEIJING (AP) ? An American executive said Monday he has been held hostage for four days at his medical supply plant in Beijing by scores of workers demanding severance packages like those given to 30 co-workers in a phased-out department.

Chip Starnes, 42, a co-owner of Coral Springs, Florida-based Specialty Medical Supplies, said local officials had visited the 10-year-old plant on the capital's outskirts and coerced him into signing agreements Saturday to meet the workers' demands even though he sought to make clear that the remaining 100 workers weren't being laid off.

The workers were expecting wire transfers by Tuesday, he said, adding that about 80 of them had been blocking every exit around the clock and depriving him of sleep by shining bright lights and banging on windows of his office. He declined to clarify the amount, saying he wanted to keep it confidential.

"I feel like a trapped animal," Starnes told The Associated Press on Monday from his first-floor office window, while holding onto the window's bars. "I think it's inhumane what is going on right now. I have been in this area for 10 years and created a lot of jobs and I would never have thought in my wildest imagination something like this would happen."

Workers inside the compound, a pair of two-story buildings behind gates and hedges in the Huairou district of the northeastern Beijing suburbs, repeatedly declined requests for comment, saying they did not want to talk to foreign media.

A local police spokesman said police were at the scene to maintain order. Four uniformed police and about a dozen other men who declined to identify themselves were standing across the road from the plant.

"As far as I know, there was a labor dispute between the workers and the company management and the dispute is being solved," said spokesman Zhao Lu of the Huairou Public Security Bureau. " I am not sure about the details of the solution, but I can guarantee the personal safety of the manager."

Representatives from the U.S. Embassy stood outside the gate but said they had no comment.

The protest reflects growing uneasiness among workers about China's slowing economic growth and the sense that growing labor costs make country a less attractive place for some foreign-owned factories. The account about local officials coercing Starnes to meet workers' demands ? if true ? reflects how officials typically consider quashing unrest to be a paramount priority.

It is not rare in China for managers to be held by workers demanding back pay or other benefits, often from their Chinese owners, though occasionally also involving foreign bosses. It is unusual for such an incident to take place in Beijing because most such ventures have moved elsewhere in China because of high costs in the capital.

Starnes said the company had gradually been winding down its plastics division, planning to move it to Mumbai, India. He arrived in Beijing last Tuesday to lay off the last 30 people. Some had been working there for up to nine years, so their compensation packages were "pretty nice," he said.

Some of the workers in the other divisions got wind of this, and, coupled with rumors that the whole plant was moving to India, started demanding similar severance packages on Friday.

AJ Allemdinger wins NASCAR Nationwide in Wisconsin

ELKHART LAKE, Wis. (AP) ? AJ Allmendinger slid past Justin Allgaier with seven laps to go, then defended his lead through a late restart and a pair of nerve-testing green-white-checkered overtime finishes to win Saturday's NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Road America.

For Allmendinger, it was another step toward rebuilding his racing career after sitting out part of last season because of a violation of NASCAR's substance-abuse policy. It also was a return to victory lane at Road America for Allmendinger, who won at the four-mile road course in Central Wisconsin in the Champ Car Series in 2006.

Allgaier finished second, followed by Parker Kligerman, Owen Kelly and Sam Hornish Jr.

Billy Johnson led on a restart with eight to go, but he slid wide in Turn 5 and was passed by Allgaier and Allmendinger. Allmendinger then made the decisive move one lap later, snatching the lead from Allgaier at the top of the hill in Turn 6.

He'd have to defend his lead on three more restarts, fending off a charge from Allgaier with three laps to go and then facing two green-white-checkered finishes -- NASCAR's version of overtime.

Allmendinger once again took the lead, only to watch another caution come out for Michael Annett's accident to trigger a second overtime.

With drivers facing concerns about having enough fuel left on the second green-white-checkered restart, Allmendinger held on again to take the checkered flag and stop in Turn 5 to celebrate in front of the fans.

Allmendinger started from pole position and led early, but made a mistake on lap seven and briefly slipped off the track. He regained control and got back on track but lost two places in the process, going from first to third.

That gave the lead to Johnson, a California native with a background in sports car racing. But Johnson was penalized for entering pit road too fast on lap 14, sending him to the back of the field.

Kligerman then slid off track while in the lead on lap 19, allowing Kelly to take the lead with Allmendinger right on his back bumper.

Defending race winner Nelson Piquet Jr. then had a rough moment before the race's halfway point, plowing into the back of Brian Scott's car. Piquet's hood crumpled in the crash, costing him any chance of contention.

Allmendinger then retook the lead on lap 26, bumping his way past Kelly on the exit of Turn 5. Allmendinger pulled away and quickly built a lead of more than two seconds -- and then Kelly lost second place when he came to a stop on the back side of the track, apparently out of fuel. After getting a push back to the pits from a safety vehicle, Kelly was able to get back in the race.

Most of the leaders then pitted with 19 laps to go -- right at the outer edge of most teams' fuel windows, making it unclear whether they had enough to make it to the end.

Allmendinger retook the lead on a restart on lap 34 as Johnson climbed back into contention from his earlier pit road speeding penalty, taking third place on the restart and surging to second on lap 35.

Johnson then would charge past Allmendinger on lap 39 after a restart, muscling his way into the lead as Allmendinger lost several spots. Meanwhile, Kenny Habul caused a moment of levity when he veered off course on the restart and collected a large advertising sign, which stuck to his nose for the better part of a lap before another caution came out.

It was a big step for Allmendinger, whose racing career took a wrong turn last year when he failed a NASCAR drug test, resulting in a suspension and the loss of his ride at Penske Racing.

Allmendinger, who said he took a pill offered by a friend that turned out to be Adderall, was reinstated after completing a NASCAR-affiliated recovery program, and now is getting a limited second chance with the Penske team this year.

Space telescope funded by public donations meets $1 million goal

Public donors giving between $10 and $10,000 each have hit a $1 million crowdfunding goal for ARKYD, the pint-size space telescope that can be used by schools and enthusiasts alike.

The first space observatory paid for in part by public donations has hit its initial $1 million fundraising goal, putting the project on track for launch in 2015.

The telescope, dubbed ARKYD, is a munchkin compared with the venerable Hubble Space Telescope or its successor, the James Web Space Telescope. ARKYD's light-gathering mirror is only about 8 inches across, compared with Hubble's 13-foot mirror or the 21-foot mirror of the James Webb telescope, slated for launch in October 2018.

But ARKYD holds the potential to offer something these others don't ? time on an orbiting observatory for anyone from an elementary-school student to professional scientists whose research goals range from studying asteroids to hunting for planets outside our solar system.

The project is the first step toward Planetary Resources, Inc.'s ultimate aim of mining asteroids. The company intends to incorporate such an instrument into spacecraft that initially would rendezvous with an asteroid passing relatively close to Earth and later reach asteroids farther away.

To that end, Planetary Resources developed ARKYD and its needed support infrastructure, such as a ground station, with money from private investors. But the company was founded by X-Prize Foundation founder and chairman Peter Diamandis and Eric Anderson, both of whom champion broader public engagement in science. Hence the crowdfunding and the benefits that come with donating.

The $1 million mark ensures that a bare-bones telescope will get launched and maintained. And it ensures that the company will be able to deliver what they promised to donors. For instance:

  • A $10 donation "gets you our eternal gratitude" and "a say in how the telescope is used," according to the company's fundraising page on the website Kickstarter.
  • Up that to $25, and you get a "selfie" ? you supply a picture of yourself, they send it to the observatory, and an onboard camera takes a picture of your picture displayed on a small video screen on the telescope's exterior, giving you Earth or space as a backdrop.
  • For $450, you get to pick three targets for the telescope and receive the images that result.
  • Pony up $5,000, and the school or museum of your choice gets 25 targets, in addition to teaching tools that will help incorporate the observations into its science curriculum.
  • For $10,000 (24 people have contributed at this level so far), it's the school support plus extras, including tickets to the launch, among other items.

Now that fundraising has met the company's basic goal, the 10 days remaining in Planetary Resources' drive are devoted to raising more to increase the observatory system's capabilities. A total of $1.3 million would allow the company to build a second ground station to receive data from the craft. This would speed processing and distribution of images. If the company hits the $2 million mark, it will beef up the telescope for planet-hunting purposes.

This holds a special attraction for Sara Seager, a planetary scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a member of Planetary Resources' advisory board. The project represents what she terms "a fresh approach" to space science.

It's striving to engage the world with access to an on-orbit observatory, she says. And it's moving in a direction she has been advocating for the field ? smaller and more numerous space observatories.

"I'd like to see a new paradigm for space science, where instead of one big telescope we have a fleet of small telescopes," she adds.

Her students have been working on a prototype for what, in effect, is a telescope in a shoe box. The telescope is designed to hunt for planets around nearby stars. But, she says, it has been hard to get money to launch the prototype, which would piggyback on a rocket carrying a larger, primary payload to orbit.

A small telescope must be incredibly stable to have any hope of detecting an extrasolar planet as it passes in front of its star and dims the starlight briefly. In collaboration with MIT's Draper Laboratory, she says, she, her students, and collaborators have licked that problem.

"By combining forces with Planetary Resources, we may be able to the the job done," she says, referring to orbiting what could be the first of many small space telescopes with this precision-pointing capability.

Nationals' Harper uncertain about rehab timeline

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper is not convinced he can begin a rehab assignment as quickly as his manager believes.

Davey Johnson had said Friday that he expects Harper to start a rehab stint Tuesday at Class A Potomac. Harper, who has been sidelined since May 26 with left knee bursitis, said he thought he needed an extra day or two.

"It just depends how I feel today and tomorrow," Harper said before Saturday's game against the Colorado Rockies. "Monday is an off day, which is good. Tuesday, that's kind of early. I'm thinking Wednesday or Thursday, maybe."

Reporters later informed Johnson of Harper's comments during the manager's pregame media session.

"I'll have a conversation with him about that," Johnson said. "When a player starts playing, it's really up to me, what I think they need. Not up to the player. I'm always trying to do what's best for the player. But at the same time, it's my job to know when they're ready and when they're not."

Entering Saturday, Harper has missed 29 of the Nationals' 73 games. The NL Rookie of the Year ran in the outfield and took swings in the indoor batting cage the previous two days.

"Running after a ball and running on the bases and hitting, I'm full speed, every single day," Harper said. "It's going to be hard playing at 70 percent if they want me to play at 70 percent. I'm not going to do that. I want to come back 100 percent and get back as quick as I can."

Johnson: "The most I'm concerned about is is (Harper) going to be able to bounce back after playing a nine-inning game? He's probably worried about timing and everything being letter-perfect. All that changes from if you're in Potomac. You may never get your timing there because it's a whole new ballgame there, guys don't have command as well as they do up here, and there's a big variation in how they pitch to guys.

"So I'm more concerned about just how they recover from when they come off the DL than I am about what they hit. Since he's never really been on the DL or done rehab, I think his concept might be different from mine."

Before his managerial career, the 70-year-old Johnson played in the majors for 13 seasons.

"I trust players too. They know more about their body than the medical staff," Johnson said. "But when you come back from injury, are you ever 100 percent? But the body has a wonderful ability to heal itself. The more you get the blood flowing, the more you have to heal. Let's get off the DL, guys."

Despite the missed games, Harper, batting .287, remains tied with Ian Desmond for the team lead in home runs with 12.

"It's still going to be sore the whole year, I feel like," Harper said of his left knee. "But daily, it's getting better. I have no pain, which is good. I'm a little sore everywhere else, but that's common. It's good to have no pain finally. To run with zero pain is going to feel great."

Washington has struggled without its left fielder, but their current three-game winning streak has moved the Nationals one game above .500 at 37-36.

Gunmen kill nine foreign tourists and their guide in northern Pakistan

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (Reuters) - Gunmen stormed a hotel in a remote part of northern Pakistan on Sunday and killed nine foreign tourists and a Pakistani guide near the foot of one of the world's tallest mountains, police and security officials said.

Five Ukrainians, three Chinese, a Russian and their guide were killed in the attack in a remote resort area near the base camp for the 8,125-metre snow-covered Nanga Parbat peak, a popular destination for adventurous trekkers, officials said.

"Unknown people entered a hotel where foreign tourists were staying last night and opened fire," Ali Sher, a senior police officer in Gilgit-Baltistan province, told Reuters.

Sher had earlier said 10 foreign tourists were killed, but officials revised the tally as fresh reports arrived from the area.

A Pakistani militant group known as Jundullah claimed responsibility for the attack.

"These foreigners are our enemies and we proudly claim responsibility for killing them and will continue such attacks in the future as well," Jundullah spokesman Ahmed Marwat told Reuters by telephone.

The same group has claimed responsibility for a series of attacks on members of Pakistan's Shi'ite Muslim minority, known as Shias, in northern Pakistan, including an ambush in February 2012 when gunmen shot 18 bus passengers by the roadside.

The gunmen fled after the attack on the hotel, which took place at about 1 a.m. on Sunday, Sher said.

A senior government official said a large number of security personnel had been sent to the area.

"Since the area is very remote with no roads or transport, the bodies will have to be retrieved by helicopter," the official said.

Gilgit-Baltistan, which borders China and Kashmir, had been considered one of the more secure areas of Pakistan, but has witnessed a spate of attacks by militants targeting members of Pakistan's Shi'ite minority in recent years.

It was the first time foreign tourists had been attacked in the province, which is famous for its natural beauty.

Pakistan receives few foreign tourists, but a trickle of visitors is tempted by the spectacular mountain scenery in its northern areas, where the Hindu Kush, Karakoram and Himalaya mountain ranges converge.

Tricks On How To Make Money In Website Marketing - We Want CSG

Online marketing is a technique used by many businesses and individuals to sell their products and services. Sales are created through Internet promotion with the help of advertising and search engine optimization. If you would like to learn more about web marketing, you may find the following information useful.

To convince your audience before they buy the product, send them to a content page that presents content about the product such as a video. They will feel like they know more about what they are buying. This approach demonstrates that you want to do more than simply push a sale on them; you want to educate them, and leave the purchasing decision in their hands.

TIP! Flashy websites look neat, but avoid making your website too distracting. When someone visits your site, you have only a few seconds to intrigue them and get them to stay.

Your affiliate marketing can be in places other than the internet. You can contact other bloggers or anyone else in your field and then hold a conference some place in person. You could also set up real-life meetings for you and your community of customers and visitors. Regardless of what you decide to do, you don?t have to confine yourself to the internet.

Offer information your customers can use if you want to build an online following. Just providing a one page website that gives your hours and address is not going to attract customers. Build up your website with useful content, interesting reviews and other things that shows your visitors that you know what you are doing and that you are not just a fly by night presence.

Do not overuse AJAX or Flash. In spite of the fact it can look nice and give your site interactivity, it is useless in helping search engines actually find your website. If you want to employ Flash, use it sparingly and make sure you have plenty of other keywords and navigational tools available.

TIP! Even if you hit a few bumps in the road when it comes to internet marketing, you must persevere. Your success in internet marketing will be determined in the first steps you take after you decide and reject the idea of giving it up.

Create a signature to put at the bottom of each e-mail you send, whether it?s for a personal or business message. In many ways, your e-mail signature is like a business card, so write a memorable signature that you would be happy to share with everyone on the Internet. It also offers your contact a way to see what is going on with your business.

In conclusion, many businesses use Internet promotion to sell products and services. Internet promotion uses methods such as search engine optimization and advertising to generate sales interest. If you remember the advice in this article, you can use Internet marketing to seriously boost interest in your own products and services.

My Best Diversified Portfolio For Dividend Investors - Seeking Alpha

In my previous posts, I tried to determine which stock from each of nine different sectors of the Russell 3000 companies is the most attractive for dividend-seeking investors.

In this article, I created a diversified portfolio, which includes the most attractive stock for dividend investors from each sector. Diversification helps investors to reduce risks. In my opinion, long-term investing in this portfolio will reward the investor a satisfying income with a good chance of capital gain.

I consider that besides healthy dividend yield, low payout ratio and consistent dividend growth are the most crucial factors for dividend-seeking investors. In addition, since dividend investors try to avoid too much risk, The Sharpe ratio, which measures the ratio of reward to risk, is also extremely important.

My nine best diversified stocks for dividend investors from the nine different sectors are shown in the table below. All the data for this article were taken from Portfolio123 and finviz.com on June 20, before the market open.

Summary

As diversification helps investors to reduce risks, I decided to build a portfolio of nine companies from nine different sectors. This portfolio's size is not too big to control and it gives quite a good diversification.

Each one of the nine companies in this portfolio is in my opinion, the best choice among the Russell 3000 companies in each sector for dividend-seeking investors, due to its high yield, high rate of raising dividend payment, low payout ratio and high Sharpe ratio.

The average forward dividend yield of this portfolio is quite high at 3.32%. The average annual dividend growth for the past five years was very high at 25.24%. Companies that regularly increase dividends are generally more stable. Increasing dividends is the assurance that dividend income retains its purchasing power over time.

The reason I consider these nine companies as my best stocks for dividend investors from the nine different sectors can be found in my previous articles, each article is devoted to one different sector.

In my opinion, long-term investing in this portfolio will reward the investor a nice income with a good chance of capital gain.

Disclosure: I have no positions in any stocks mentioned, and no plans to initiate any positions within the next 72 hours. I wrote this article myself, and it expresses my own opinions. I am not receiving compensation for it (other than from Seeking Alpha). I have no business relationship with any company whose stock is mentioned in this article. (More...)

(AP) ? There were breakaways, rebounds, long slap shots and tips. The result was 11 goals in all, coming from all over the ice.

Chicago's 6-5 overtime victory at Boston in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup finals on Wednesday night was the highest-scoring game in this year's NHL playoffs and raised questions about how the final three games of this deadlocked series will look.

The biggest variable could be the recovery of goalies Tuukka Rask of the Bruins and Corey Crawford of the Blackhawks, who have a couple days to find their confidence again before Game 5 in Chicago on Saturday night.

Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane says the series has been "pretty bizarre so far" and he has no idea what's next.

Obama nominating Comey as FBI director

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama has chosen a former George W. Bush administration official best known for a dramatic hospital bedside standoff against a warrantless wiretapping program to head the FBI for the next decade.

White House officials are hoping that James Comey's bipartisan background and two decades of law enforcement experience will help him win Senate approval to replace outgoing FBI Director Robert Mueller. Mueller took over the agency the week before the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, and will have served longer than any director besides J. Edgar Hoover when he steps down Sept. 4.

Mueller transformed the agency into one the country's chief weapons against terrorism, leading Obama to ask him in 2011 to stay on two years beyond his initial 10-year term. The new director would take over as the agency grapples with a privacy debates surrounding a host of recently exposed investigative tactics, and the White House said Obama would announce Comey as the man for the job Friday afternoon in the Rose Garden.

Comey was a federal prosecutor who served for several years as the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York before coming to Washington after 9/11 as deputy attorney general. In recent years he's been an executive at defense company Lockheed Martin, general counsel to hedge fund Bridgewater Associates, board member at HSBC Holdings and lecturer on national security law at Columbia Law School.

He has shown a willingness to take on battles over government surveillance in the age of terrorism ? an issue that remains prominent in current Washington debate. In a confrontation he has called the most difficult night of his career, he rushed to the hospital bedside of his boss, John Ashcroft, in 2004 to stop two senior Bush White House aides from getting the ailing attorney general's approval to reauthorize a post-9/11 program that allowed government wiretaps to be used without warrants.

Comey's defiance won him respect in Washington, and Republicans have said they see no major obstacles to his confirmation. But he is certain to face tough questions about his recent hedge fund work and his ties to Wall Street as well as how he would handle current, high-profile FBI investigations.

The FBI is responsible for both intelligence and law enforcement, with more than 36,000 employees. It has faced questions in recent weeks over media leak probes involving The Associated Press and Fox News; the Boston Marathon bombings; the attack at Benghazi, Libya, that killed four Americans; and two vast government surveillance programs into phone records and online communications.

The leaker of those National Security Agency programs, former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, also is the subject of a criminal investigation. And just this week, Mueller revealed the FBI uses drones for surveillance of stationary subjects and said the privacy implications of such operations are worthy of debate.

The American Civil Liberties Union, which doesn't take positions on nominees, is raising questions about Comey's record on national security. ACLU senior policy counsel Mike German said while Comey stood up to some surveillance, he eventually approved the NSA program, along with interrogation techniques that included waterboarding, as well as defended the indefinite detention of Jose Padilla, an American terrorism suspect.

"We want to make sure whoever sits in that chair has a determined interest in protecting the rule of law, particularly since they will be there 10 years, outlasting this president and potentially the next president," German said.

But the top Democrat and Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee that will oversee Comey's confirmation hearing expressed support for his nomination. Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., called for senators to give Comey "the swift and respectful confirmation he deserves."

Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, said Comey's experience on national security would benefit the FBI. Grassley also said he wanted to question Comey on his work in the hedge fund industry and on the Obama administration's efforts to prosecute Wall Street for its role in the economic downturn.

In dramatic testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee in 2007, Comey said he thought the no-warrant wiretapping program was so questionable that he refused to reauthorize it while serving as acting attorney general during Ashcroft's hospitalization. Comey said when he learned that the White House chief of staff and counsel were heading to Ashcroft's room despite his wife's instructions that there be no visitors, Comey beat them there and watched as Ashcroft turned them away.

"That night was probably the most difficult night of my professional life," Comey testified. He said he and Ashcroft had reservations about the program's legality, but he would not discuss details since the program was classified.

Comey was deputy attorney general in 2005 when he unsuccessfully tried to limit tough interrogation tactics against suspected terrorists. He told then-Attorney General Alberto Gonzales that some of the practices were wrong and would damage the department's reputation.

As U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, Comey headed one of the nation's most prominent prosecutorial offices and one at the front lines in the fight against terrorism, corporate malfeasance, organized crime and the war on drugs.

As an assistant U.S. attorney in Virginia, Comey handled the investigation of the 1996 bombing of the Khobar Towers housing complex near Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, which killed 19 U.S. military personnel.

India Gold imports a reason behind FDI thinking in defence pharma and telecom?

By Rakesh Neelakandan
India's insatiable gold appetite is in a way leading the nation to usher in Foreign Direct Investment in defence, pharma and telecom!

Let me explain: India's gold imports are leading to a widening of CAD or Current Account Deficit?the difference between outflows and inflows of foreign currency?and is giving its finance minister sleepless nights. The other partner in crime, crude oil imports; the commodity being an essential commodity, cannot be curbed.

The only way to contain Current Account Deficit (CAD) is to increase the domestic production of oil & coal and restraining the consumption of gold, said the Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram recently.

Finance Minister's aversion to gold looks to be of recent origin.

?India does not produce an ounce of gold. You pay in rupee, but the government has to spend dollars to buy gold,? Chidambaram had said to The Times of India. ?I do not buy gold. To think that gold is the safest investment is wrong.?

(This may partly explain why India is not going aggressive on exploration activities in gold!)

The Current Account Deficit of India stood at 5% of GDP in 2012-13 and was seen reaching 6.7% of GDP in October-December quarter.

Chidambaram said that the extent of CAD and its financing are the two major concerns. He said that it is important to finance CAD than to draw from the reserves.

Now, how would you finance the CAD and even add to foreign exchange reserves.?

There are two options:

As a short-term measure, one may promote FII or Foreign Institutional Investments in debt and equities. However, with the Quantitative Easing measures in US looks set to tapering, there is a capital flight from Emerging Markets like India. This is significantly contributing to Rupee depreciation.

The other route is FDI or Foreign Direct Investment in selected sectors. Currently, telecom sector has 74% cap in FDI and so also with broadcast sector. Defence sector is however closely guarded and attracts a cap of 26%.

On July 1, India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would convene a meeting of the respective ministers on raising caps. The outcome of the meeting remains unpredictable. However, widening CAD and behind it, the expanding gold appettite are also elements in forcing an FDI rethink.?

Meanwhile, authorities expect a moderation of gold imports in June as various curbs on gold take effect.
