(AP) ? The massive blimp-like aircraft flies but just barely, hovering only a dozen feet off a military hangar floor during flight testing south of Los Angeles.

Still, the fact that the hulking Aeroscraft could fly for just a few minutes represents a step forward in aviation, according to the engineers who developed it. The Department of Defense and NASA have invested $35 million in the prototype because of its potential to one day carry more cargo than any other aircraft to disaster zones and forward military bases.

"I realized that I put a little dot in the line of aviation history. A little dot for something that has never been demonstrated before, now it's feasible," said flight control engineer Munir Jojo-Verge.

The airship is undergoing testing this month at Marine Corps Air Station in Tustin, and must go through several more rounds of flight testing before it could be used in a disaster zone or anywhere else. The first major flight test took place Jan. 3.

The biggest challenge for engineers is making sure the airship will be able to withstand high winds and other extreme weather conditions, Jojo-Verge said.

Worldwide Aeros, the company that developed the aircraft, said it also must secure more funding for the next round of flight testing, but is hopeful the Defense Department and others will step in again as investors.

The company says the cargo airship's potential to carry more cargo more efficiently than ever before would provide the U.S. military with an advantage on the battlefield and greater capacity to save more lives during natural disasters.

The lighter-than-air vehicle is not a blimp or a zeppelin because it has a rigid structure made out of ultra-light carbon fiber and aluminum underneath its high-tech Mylar skin. Inside, balloons hold the helium that gives the vehicle lift. Unlike hydrogen, the gas used in the Hindenburg airship that crashed in 1937, helium is not flammable.

The airship functions like a submarine, releasing air to rise and taking in air to descend, said Aeros mechanical engineer Tim Kenny. It can take off vertically, like a helicopter, then change its buoyancy to become heavier than air for landing and unloading.

"It allows the vehicle to set down on the ground. And then when we want to become lighter than air, we release that air and then the vehicle floats and we can allow it to take off," Kenny said.

The project has set abuzz the old hangars at the Marine Corps Air Station in Tustin. The structures were built to hold blimps during World War II. Now workers zip around in cherry-pickers, and the airship's silvery surface shines against the warm tones of the aging wood of the walls.

"You could take this vehicle and go to destinations that have been destroyed, where there's no ports, no runways, stuff like that. This vehicle could go in there, offload the cargo even if there's no infrastructure, no landing site for it to land on, this vehicle can unload its whole payload," said Kenny.

Next, Aeros wants to build a full-size 450-foot-long vehicle that can carry 66 tons of payload.

Research teams from Russia, the United Kingdom and United States have each spearheaded drilling efforts over the past few years to pierce and sample separate subglacial Antarctic lakes. Russian scientists reported last year piercing into Lake Vostok but has so far turned up no identifiable life. Those researchers are now working to analyze a new sample of ice recently retrieved from that drill project. Last month, the British team suspended its efforts for this summer season (which ends next month) to reach Lake Ellsworth.

The just-completed borehole into Lake Whillans ?marks the first successful retrieval of clean whole samples from an Antarctic subglacial lake,? the U.S. team reported today. ?Water and sediment samples returned to the surface are now being processed to answer seminal questions related to the structure and function of subglacial microbial life, climate history, and contemporary ice sheet dynamics.?

A research team led by Frank Rack, of the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, recently developed and field-tested the novel hot-water drill used to cut through the roughly half-mile-deep sheet of ice to reach Lake Whillans. ?Over the whole Antarctic continent, there are more than 340 [subglacial] lakes,? he notes. ?We selected this one because we know that it goes up and down, which means that the water underneath the ice sheet is periodically filling up the lake, then draining out again.?

Researchers have monitored this cycle through a rise and fall of the surface of that portion of the ice sheet covering the lake. Each cycle can last up to a decade, Rack says.

A video camera and series of sampling instruments will be periodically lowered down the borehole in the day or two available before this portal begins freezing shut again. ?Lake Whillans has already presented surprises,? according to Doug Fox, a reporter embedded with the drill research team, which is camped out less than 400 miles from the South Pole. ?For one, the lake has turned out to be only five or six feet deep ? shallower than the 20 to 30 feet that people expected based on seismic measurements,? Fox reported in a blog on the Discover website.

When I met with the Lake Whillans research team, last month, they planned to begin analyses of retrieved water and sediment within minutes of it reaching the surface. A series of mobile research labs were recently hauled to the Lake Whillans drill site. At least one lab will be used to study the chemistry of the water. Another will focus on probing for signs of microbial life ? chiefly bacteria and viruses.

(AP) ? Victor Oladipo wasted no time getting Indiana's fans riled up Sunday.

They responded to his energetic play with loud, boisterous support for the next two hours and he responded to their cheers by delivering a performance to remember.

The junior guard finished with 21 points, seven rebounds, six steals and three blocks, leading the seventh-ranked Hoosiers to a 75-70 victory over No. 13 Michigan State on a day Oladipo was already thinking about doing more.

"There are still things I need to improve on, even today," Oladipo said. "So I have to keep getting better."

This one will be hard to top.

Indiana (18-2, 6-1 Big Ten) has won three straight since a Jan. 25 loss to Wisconsin. It has won back-to-back games over the Spartans after ending a six-game losing streak in the series. The Hoosiers picked up their ninth win in Assembly Hall over a Top 25 foe during the past 24 months, and their latest victory helped break up a three-way logjam atop the Big Ten. Indiana was awaiting the result of the Michigan-Illinois game to see if it would share the conference lead with the Wolverines or have it all to themselves.

How much did this win mean to coach Tom Crean?

After shaking hands with his old friend, Tom Izzo, Crean walked to the corner in the south end of Assembly Hall, raised both arms and thanked the students for their constant noise. A few minutes later, he was thanking others.

"He (Oladipo) was a tremendous difference from the start of the game. He had a knowledge base that he put into his game as to how he was going to defend," Crean said. "If you're not cerebral like that and at the same time, quick, it's hard to defend like that. But he's been good. We knew he was going to play well on the offensive end and to take away things on the defensive end, too. And we don't win this game without Will Sheehey, we really don't."

The impact of Oladipo was evident in the box score and beyond.

He was 8 of 12 from the field and 4 of 6 from the line with more offensive rebounds (four) than defensive. Crean also credited him with 15 first-half deflections, something Crean said he's never seen before. And when Oladipo wasn't making plays, there were plenty of others willing to help.

Cody Zeller made only two baskets and finished with nine points but scored on a layup with 1:38 to go to make it a two-possession game. He also took a charge with 14.3 seconds left that essentially sealed the win.

Christian Watford finished with 12 points and six rebounds, Yogi Ferrrell had 11 points and a key 3-pointer just before halftime and Jordan Hulls had 10 points and four assists. Most of it was the result of Oladipo and the threat he posed on every possession.

"That's just Victor," Watford explained. "We feel like we're a great team when Victor does this. He brings a lot of energy. Not only that, he gets us open by the way he attacks the basket. He did a great job today."

Michigan State (17-4, 6-2) just couldn't keep up.

Gary Harris, last year's Indiana Mr. Basketball was booed relentlessly, yet made five 3-pointers and finished with 21 points. Adreian Payne added 18 points and was 3 of 4 from beyond the arc, matching his season total of three 3s. The only other player to reach double figures was Branden Dawson, another Indiana native, who has 12 points and eight rebounds.

Still, it wasn't up to Izzo's standards. The Spartans, playing in special green-and-gold uniforms, committed 19 turnovers, allowed Indiana to shoot 50.9 percent from the field and essentially wound up with a rebounding draw, 32-31. Guard Keith Appling fouled out with 5:14 to go, too.

"Our whole deal was to keep them out of the lane and not turn the ball over and we didn't do either one of those very good," Izzo said. "We got tired, and we've been so good down the stretch and with three minutes left, I thought we had a chance."

It was every bit as entertaining as advertised.

After Michigan State took a 31-30 lead late in the first half, Indiana answered with a 3 from Sheehey and another 3 from Hulls. Ferrell's 3 to close the half gave Indiana 44-38 lead.

Oladipo's two free throws with 16:28 to go extended the lead to 50-43, but when it looked like the Hoosiers might pull away, Harris dashed those hopes by making back-to-back 3s over the next 50 seconds to get the Spartans within 50-49.

Indiana never led by more than six the rest of the way, but with Oladipo leading the defense, Michigan State never managed to tie the score or take the lead, either.

The Hoosiers final sealed it in the final 98 seconds when Zeller made the layup and took the charge, and Hulls made 1 of 2 free throws.

"It was a physical game, a hard-nosed game, it was a high-level game and they're a great team," Crean said. "That's why it's a great win for us."

Samsung Music Hub to reach other companies' devices, more countries

Samsung's Music Hub has only had a comparatively small reach to date, delivering tunes to seven countries (six with scan-and-match) and just a handful of devices. Senior VP of Media Services TJ Kang expects the audio service to broaden its horizons -- he tells The Next Web that Samsung wants to widen access to rivals' gear as well. There's no convenient timetable to put on the calendar, but the expansion is a significant move for a service that's frequently seen as more of a brand-specific checklist feature than a full competitor with the likes of Google Music or iTunes. Plans for Samsung's own devices are more definite, Kang says. Music Hub is coming to more countries in 2013, as long as licensing deals work out, and further device support (including the non-mobile variety) will depend on flagship hardware releases scattered throughout the year. No matter where Media Hub heads next, it's safe to presume that it will be more than just a nice bonus in the near future.

Vonn beats Maze to win World Cup giant slalom

MARIBOR, Slovenia (AP) ? Lindsey Vonn beat rival Tina Maze on the Slovenian's home snow and in her best discipline Saturday, earning a surprising victory in a giant slalom.

Maze had a chance to secure her third giant slalom discipline title with a victory and led after a near-perfect first run, but a poor start to the second cost her valuable time and she finished 0.08 seconds behind Vonn.

Vonn proved again that she is back to her best after an illness by putting down two good runs in what is traditionally her weakest event to win in 2 minutes, 22.2 seconds.

Vonn was third after the first run but overcame several errors to have the fastest time in the second and create a margin that Maze couldn't bridge.

"In the second run I decided, OK, it's all or nothing, I had to go for it," Vonn said. "It's been a rough year for me in GS, so it's just perfect."

Vonn earned her first GS victory since March of last year, and her second win in a week after taking the downhill at Cortina D'Ampezzo.

With her 59th World Cup win overall, she's just three away from equaling Annemarie Moser Proell's record on the women's side.

Austria's Anna Fenninger was third, 0.57 seconds behind Vonn.

Maze extended her lead in the overall standing to 748 points against her closest challenger, Germany's Maria Hoefl-Riesch, who finished fourth. Vonn stands another 66 points back in third, having missed several races while recovering from an intestinal illness that landed her in hospital in November.

The 29-year-old Maze was expected to clinch the GS title in front of a passionate home crowd and was 0.48 seconds ahead of Vonn after dominating the first run.

However, she ran wide at the start of the second, leaving her 0.13 seconds behind her rival at the first checkpoint. Despite the cheers of the fans urging her on, Maze couldn't make up the time and finished with tears in her eyes.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) ? Never mess with the guy who knows how to rumble.

Little-known Max Aaron won his first title at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships on Sunday and helped knock down three-time champion Jeremy Abbott to the last step on the podium. With two quadruple jumps and an arsenal's worth of other tricks in his "West Side Story" program, don't count the 20-year-old upstart out at the world championships in March, either.

Aaron screamed and shook his fists when he finished his program, then slid across the ice giving a Tiger Woods-like fist pump. (He was wearing red, appropriately, and it was Sunday.) When his marks were posted, Aaron's jaw dropped and the audience roared. He won the free skate in a rout to jump from fourth to first, and finished with 255 points overall, almost four better than Ross Miner.

Abbott, who had won three of the last four U.S. titles, dropped to third after a disappointing and flawed free skate.

Aaron was the U.S. junior champ two years ago, but has done little of note since then. Skating first of the top men, however, he wasted no time showing he intended to make a run at the title. He opened with two quadruple salchows, the first in combination with a double toe loop, and did seven other triples. Aside from a small turn out on a triple axel, all were done with such great speed and flow people watching at home on their couches were probably saying, "That doesn't look so hard, I could do that."

Aaron is more than just a jumping bean, however. His spins were excellent, so fast and tightly centered he was practically a blur. He jazzed up his footwork with high kicks and hops, the kind of flourishes audiences ? and judges ? love.

But it was his perfect portrayal of the bad boy in "West Side Story" that was most entertaining. As he heard the first notes of his music, he fixed the audience with a smirk and began snapping his fingers. He oozed attitude throughout the entire program, so much so it's a wonder the Jets didn't storm the ice and try and wipe the smile from his face.

His big score in the free skate ? 175.87 ? was going to be tough for Abbott, Miner and the rest of the guys to top. No one came close.

Third the last two years at nationals, Miner had a breakthrough at NHK Trophy, where he was the bronze medalist. That gave him confidence he could be the top American man, and he's skating with more polish and assertiveness than ever before. Every element in his program, to the old "Captain Blood" movie, was finished to perfection. There was no rushing out of jumps or awkward ends to spins. It's the kind of precision a skater has to have if he's to contend with the international crowd.

He, too, did a quad ? a gorgeous one, to boot ? and seven other triple jumps. His only flaw was singling an axel, a silly mistake that's sure to nag at him until next year's nationals.

Abbott will have plenty of regrets after a program that was barely even adequate for a skater of his caliber. He was so slow on the approach to his quadruple toe it looked as if he was going to stop and, no surprise, he landed on his rear end. But it was his other jumps that were more disappointing. He turned several planned triples into doubles, and his landings were scratchy and awkward. That's a no-no for anyone, but it was particularly bad for a skater who prides himself on his skating skills, including edge quality so fine the carvings could be sold as artwork.

Abbott knew it, too, banging his forehead with his fist as he skated off the ice. But when he saw the marks, even he looked stunned and the audience gasped.

Venezuela VP: ailing Chavez in 'best moment'

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) ? Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez's condition has improved and he is now optimistic as he faces more treatment following cancer surgery, his vice president said Saturday.

Vice President Nicolas Maduro said after meeting with Chavez in Cuba that the ailing president is now "in the best moment we've seen him in these days of struggle" following his Dec. 11 cancer surgery. Chavez hasn't appeared or spoken publicly since before the operation, and his government has said he suffered complications including a severe respiratory infection but has recently been improving.

Maduro spoke on state television early Saturday after returning from Havana to Venezuela. He said he was leaving shortly for a summit meeting in Chile with a written message from Chavez.

"We're taking a message prepared by the president, and we're going to turn it over to heads of state who attend the CELAC summit. He makes fundamental proposals," Maduro said, adding that the message was in Chavez's handwriting.

Maduro said Chavez also sent a message for Venezuelans, including that he was "very optimistic" about his treatment. Maduro said Chavez is "hanging on to Christ and to life."

Maduro said Chavez also urged his supporters in Venezuela to be alert about opponents seeking to do harm to his socialist-oriented "revolution." However, Maduro didn't elaborate.

The vice president, whom Chavez designated as his successor before the operation, spoke on television surrounded by officials including Defense Minister Diego Molero and Information Minister Ernesto Villegas. Maduro said Villegas would give a more detailed update on Chavez's health later Saturday.

Chavez has undergone repeated surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation treatment for an unspecified type of pelvic cancer. He has undergone much of his treatment in Cuba.

The 58-year-old president won re-election in October, and lawmakers indefinitely put off his inauguration earlier this month in a decision that was condemned by opponents but upheld by the Supreme Court.

The vice president said, without giving details, that Chavez "has reviewed and evaluated reports on different areas and has made decisions."

He also said Chavez had signed documents related to economic issues, as well as one about the selection of his socialist party's candidates for mayoral elections later this year. The vice president showed the signature in red ink.

Hitachi Zosen buys NAC International - World Nuclear News

Hitachi Zosen is to buy?used fuel management specialist NAC International from its current owner, USEC, in a $45 million deal that will provide the Japanese company with a platform to expand its operations in used fuel transportation and storage.

Osaka-headquartered engineering company Hitachi Zosen, often referred to as Hitz, has over 30 years of experience in manufacturing nuclear fuel transport and storage casks and has fabricated dry cask storage and transportation systems for NAC since the 1980s. The company holds American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) N-stamp accreditation.?

Hitachi Zosen president Minoru Furukawa expressed the company's "strong aspiration" to further develop its?used fuel business in partnership with NAC. A company press release noted that the acquisition would enable Hitachi Zosen to offer a 'one stop' solution for used nuclear fuel storage and transportation and to develop this business globally.

"In the aftermath of events at Fukushima, there is a greater focus on spent fuel storage. Hitachi Zosen has been actively involved in NAC activities through fabrication work and is well positioned to further develop market opportunities for NAC?s innovative systems," USEC president and CEO John Welch explained.

USEC bought NAC International in 2004 for $16 million. Welch said that the decision to sell NAC formed part of the company's strategy to focus on its core uranium business and the deployment of its American Centrifuge Technology over the next several years. The centrifuge project has been dogged by problems with both technology and finance. The $45 million sale, which has been achieved through a competitive process, will benefit the company's balance sheet.

NAC president Ken Cole said the acquisition held great promise for his company's customers and employees. "We have a long-standing relationship with Hitachi Zosen and have a deep respect for its excellent operations," he said, adding that he expected the NAC organisation, which includes international nuclear fuel cycle consulting and information services as well as its storage and transport operations, to remain intact. The company's Magnastor dry-cask technology was the first high capacity multipurpose?used fuel storage technology to receive certification from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

The transaction is expected to close in March. As part of the deal, USEC will agree not to engage in competition with NAC for three years thereafter.

Slow Cooker Recipes: Ten easy ideas to keep you warm this weekend

I am in love with my slow cooker, IN LOVE I tell you. Two things I like about it: 1) I can chuck a load of food in it early in the day and then later on, post glass of wine have dinner waiting for me with no effort 2) it makes me both look and sound like some kind of domestic goddess who plans things in advance. This is exactly the kind of myth I like to encourage!

The way the left-handed Musial crouched at the plate, according to his rivals, made it appear that Stan was hitting at the pitcher from around corners. The mental book he had on opposing pitchers allowed him to wait on a pitch until it was almost in the catcher?s mitt.

Here was a man with such an acute sense of timing that he could either pull the ball to right field or go the other way with almost as much power. Overall he led St. Louis to three World Series championships.

Actually Stan, because of his odd stance at the plate, should have been a sucker for a breaking ball. Instead he compiled a lifetime batting average of .331, including 3,630 hits, 475 home runs and 1,951 runs-batted-in. His 725 career doubles, in two fewer years in the big leagues, was one more than Ty Cobb.

Even in Brooklyn, where Musial?s power often took advantage of the short right field wall at Ebbets Field, fans not only appreciated his talents but applauded them. In fact, it was Brooklyn?s bleacher crowd, because of his consistency at the plate, who gave him the nickname ?Stan the Man.?

In what should have made the Guinness Book of World Records years ago, Musial logged an incredible 1,815 hits at home and 1,815 hits on the road!

Originally a pitcher, who several of his minor league managers often used in the outfield because of his bat, Musial almost never struck out. For example, back in 1943 in 617 at bats with the Cards, he struck out only 18 times. Years later, Musial would admit that he was more comfortable in the outfield (and later first base) than he was on the mound.

Even though he had a strong throwing arm, Musial starting out had trouble throwing strikes, particularly with runners on base. Later, a hard fall on his left shoulder while playing the outfield turned his rifle-like arm into a popgun.

It was only after months of rehabilitation that his throwing arm would regain its strength. In the meantime he was learning to play the outfield, including the big league way to throw to the cutoff man that would keep an opposing base runner from scoring.

Although Musial never received the kind of credit for knowing the mysteries of hitting given to Ted Williams, Hank Aaron and Joe DiMaggio, baseball?s insiders had no trouble making him an equal partner.

In an exclusive interview with Sports Illustrated in 1961, Musial told writer Tex Maule, ?Lots of things make it tougher for a batter today than it was 20 years ago. The shape of the bat has changed because everyone swings for the fences now. The home run hitters draw the big money now.

?Used to be bats had thick handles and a big barrel," Musial continued. "Then they found it?s not the size of the bat that gets home runs ? it?s the speed with which you can swing it. Now everyone uses a bat like this ? a thin handle with a long taper, so that most of the wood?s in the end of the bat. You can whip this one around and get power in your swing.?

One of the things Cardinals general manager Branch Rickey did in 1940 was to promote 19-year-old Stan Musial to his Daytona Beach farm team in the Florida State League. A step up from where Musial had been playing and still a pitcher, Rickey felt that Dickie Kerr was the ideal minor league manager to put the finishing touches on Stan.

With Kerr picking his spots, Musial won 18 games. But even more impressive to Dickie was the way Stan hit when he played him in the outfield. It was the same year that Musial, diving for a fly ball, injured his throwing arm so badly that he would never pitch again.

Kerr not only softened things for Musial by telling him to forget about it ? that he would someday be a big league outfielder ? he also invited Stan and his wife to move in with him and his family. Musial, of course, never forgot Kerr?s kindness and years later, on Dickie?s 65th birthday, Stan and his wife presented him with the deed to a new house in Houston, Texas.

Here are two more things the reader ought to know: Musial won seven National League batting championships, and on his 60th birthday checked in at only three more pounds than he weighed at the height of his career!

Inauguration 2013: what to see and when. (Don?t wait ?til Monday.)

There is plenty to see and hear in Inauguration 2013's public ceremonies Monday, but the real action, constitutionally speaking, takes place the day before.

By Monitor Staff / January 19, 2013

If you wait until Monday to turn on your TV to watch all the pomp and ceremony of Inauguration Day ? and there will be plenty to see ? you will have already missed the actual, constitutionally ordained moment that President Obama is sworn in for a second term in office.

But fear not, you can see that too.

Thanks to a quirk of the calendar, the day mandated by the Constitution for one presidential term to expire and another to begin, Jan. 20, falls this year on a Sunday, the one day of the week Washington doesn?t do inaugurals.

So Mr. Obama, as well as Vice President Biden, will take their respective official oaths of office in private swearing-in ceremonies on Sunday, Mr. Biden at 8:55 in the morning at the Naval Observatory and Obama in the White House Blue Room at 11:55. (The last president to have such a private swearing-in was Ronald Reagan in 1985.)

But ?private? is a relative term, and mostly means no bands, no singing, no speeches, and no cast-of-thousands hoopla. That?s Monday.

On Sunday, however, TV cameras will also be there, so you can watch live as Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts administers the oath to Obama on all the major broadcast and cable networks. In the earlier ceremony, Biden will be sworn in by Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

Both justices will be pressed back into duty on Monday for the bigger show, which will feature, as its centerpiece, Obama's Inaugural Address.

As to Monday?s more public festivities, TV coverage begins in the morning, with morning news shows segueing into exclusive inaugural coverage, the precise times varying by network, and ends in mid-afternoon. It?ll be hard to miss.

The main spectacle, of course, is the public swearing-in ceremony that begins on the western steps of the US Capitol at 11:30 a.m. This will be followed at 1 p.m. by an inaugural luncheon hosted by the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies and at 2:30 by the Inaugural Parade.

Among the musical highlights of the inaugural ceremonies are performances by the United States Marine Band, PS 22 of Staten Island, N.Y., the Lee University Festival Choir from Cleveland, Tenn., and the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir.

James Taylor will offer a rendition of ?America the Beautiful? after Biden takes the oath of office.

The president then takes the oath of office (Obama?s fourth if you count the famous re-do in 2009) after which he delivers his Inaugural Address, the content of which is still secret.

After Obama concludes, pop rock singer Kelly Clarkson, of ?American Idol? fame, will sing ?My Country, ?Tis of Thee.?

She is followed by Inaugural Poet Richard Blanco, and Rev. Luis Leon of St. John's Church, pastor of the Episcopal church known as ?the church of the presidents,? who will offer a benediction.

The ceremony winds up with a performance by the day?s biggest musical name, Beyonc?, a prominent supporter of Obama?s during his reelection campaign, who will sing the national anthem.

If, instead of watching all this from the comfort of your home, you are planning to be among the estimated 800,000 Washington visitors and residents expected to fill the Mall and line the route for the Inaugural Parade, dress warmly.

Early morning temperatures on the mostly cloudy day are expected to be in the 20s, climbing to the mid-30s by noon. A passing flurry is possible in the afternoon.

Joshua Tree spider species named for U2's Bono

JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK, Calif. (AP) ? It appeared Bono and arachnids didn't mix when his "Spider-Man" musical had a rough Broadway run, but that didn't keep a biologist from naming an actual spider species after the U2 singer.

Jason Bond of Alabama's Auburn University has identified 33 new species of trapdoor spider, including three of them in the California desert at Joshua Tree National Park. The park's namesake is featured in the title and cover of U2's 1987 album, "The Joshua Tree."

The Riverside Press-Enterprise (http://bit.ly/UWsRjW ) reports that Bond named two of the spiders after Indian tribes and one, A. bonoi, after Bono.

Bond has named other spider species after Angelina Jolie, Cesar Chavez and Stephen Colbert.

The trapdoor spider, found in the Southwestern U.S., is so-named because it makes a hatch to hide from prey.

Syrian refugees struggle with cold, hunger, fear

NBC News

Syrian refugees Qassem and Aminaa with baby Mariam.

By Yuka Tachibana, Producer, NBC News

HAMED ONE RECEPTION CENTER, Jordan -- Just after dark on a bitterly cold January night, a truck full of refugees arrived at a reception center on the border with Syria. Carrying their belongings in suitcases and plastic bags, about 50 men, women and children climbed out of a Jordanian military vehicle.

A little girl cried while clinging to an older sister. A frail elderly man had to be helped off the truck. One teenage boy arrived without a coat and wearing plastic sandals on his bare feet.

Each new arrival was registered by the Jordanian military, given a blanket, orange juice and a bottle of water. A clinic nearby treated the sick. More than 152 people crossed at this border point on Sunday, and more than 500 refugees entered the country in just 12 hours, the Jordanian army said.

Just across the valley from the reception center is the Syrian city of Dara'a, which has experienced some of the fiercest fighting during the nearly two-year-old conflict.

Difficult terrain and fighting make the crossing to Jordan perilous.

Aminaa, 25,?and her husband Qassem, 33, had just arrived with their three daughters ? 2-month-old Marian, 4-year-old Shaima and 6-year-old Sham.

The family fled their home in the outskirts of Syria's capital Damascus and, after spending several weeks in Dara?a, crossed over to Jordan.

"There was shelling every day in our neighborhood," Qassem said. "I waited until I could find secure passage for us. We're apprehensive about life in Jordan but we had to leave. I carried my two daughters for a mile through the mud to get to the border.??

Most refugees declined to give their last names so as not to endanger family remaining in Syria.

Once the new arrivals were registered, the Syrians boarded a waiting bus that took them to Zaatari refugee camp, about a half hour drive away.

Jordan hosts the largest number of refugees fleeing the conflict that has raged in Syria for nearly two years and killed an estimated 60,000 people. According to United Nations refugee agency?UNHCR there are nearly?176,000 registered refugees in Jordan, but?the Jordanian government puts the total number at around 280,000. An estimated 10,000 new refugees arrived in the last 10 days, according to the UNHCR.

At least 600,000 refugees live in neighboring countries, mainly in Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon, the UNHCR says.

/

A look at the violence that has overtaken the country.

The population of Zaatari camp has grown to nearly 60,000 since it opened in August. Although its stated capacity is 75,000, the camp is struggling to keep up with the influx.

Last week, while aid workers and the Jordanian government were dealing with the dramatic increase in new arrivals, the first winter storm hit -- heavy rain and snow left much of the camp flooded and hundreds of tents collapsed under the weight of rain and snow.

?During the storm, the rain was pouring into our tent,? said Sahar, a mother of four from Dara?a. ?We were sleeping on wet ground, on very wet blankets. Then our tent collapsed so we were evacuated to a different place.?

A riot broke out as frustrated residents demanded better living conditions at the camp. Up to eight aid workers were injured.

?People are frustrated, they have family, small children, and they?re cold,? said Rob Maroni, country director for the NGO Mercy Corps. ?It?s understandable that people would be stressed and when that happens, tempers flare.??

During NBC's filming, children played on swings in a designated area managed by Mercy Corps. A group swarmed to grab used clothes being handed out by the NGO -- the clothes, and even the plastic bags they were in, were gone in a matter of seconds. ?

While a few lucky refugees have been moved to more secure pre-fabricated mobile units with electricity, money is needed to build more housing and improve sanitation, said Andrew Harper from?UNHCR.

"People need to have a more dignified place to live,? he said. ?This is now quite a large city and we need to make sure that this city has got the facilities that a population this size demands.?

?Thank God it?s warmer,? said Sahar after weather improved. ?Which made our clothes and blankets dry. We pitched the tent again and we dug trenches around the tent to protect it from water, and we?re now building a tin hut to install a gas cylinder for heating. But right now all we have are blankets to keep us warm."

Qassem?and Aminaa's family moved into Zaatari camp Monday morning, unpacking the family of five's one suitcase. ?

?In Arabic we say that the worst situations actually make you smile... so I?m smiling,? Qassem said in the tent with no electricity or heat that was their new home. ?But at least we left the prospect of death in Syria. So if you escape death of course you?re happy.? We know we have a difficult life ahead, but we escaped death.?

CNET reporter quits over CBS interference

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Technology reviews by website CNET have long been respected for their thoroughness and integrity, but that reputation has come under scrutiny after a top reporter quit over what he says is editorial interference by its parent company, CBS Corp.

The dispute centers on CNET's choice of best gadgets from last week's International CES show in Las Vegas.

CNET voted Dish Network Corp.'s "Hopper with Sling" the best home theater and audio product. Because CBS is in a legal fight with Dish over the Hopper's ad-skipping capabilities, CBS vetoed the selection, saying the product couldn't be considered "Best of CES." Instead, CNET's official selection was a sound bar from TV maker Vizio.

Reporter Greg Sandoval tweeted on Monday morning that he was resigning, saying he had lost confidence that CBS is committed to editorial independence.

"I just want to be known as an honest reporter," he tweeted, adding "CNET wasn't honest about what occurred regarding Dish."

In an apparent response to the resignation, CNET Reviews Editor-in-Chief Lindsey Turrentine posted a story on the site a few hours after Sandoval's tweet saying that around 40 CNET editorial members voted, and Dish's Hopper won the designation because of "innovative features that push shows recorded on DVR to iPads."

She said "the conflict of interest was real" and said she contemplated quitting as well, but stayed on to explain the situation to staff and prevent a recurrence. She said CNET staff was asked to re-vote after the Hopper was excluded, and regretted not revealing at first that it had won.

"I wish I could have overridden the decision not to reveal that Dish had won the vote," she wrote. "For that I apologize to my staff and to CNET readers."

A spokesman for CBS, which also owns such marquee journalism properties as CBS News and 60 Minutes, declined to comment on how a similar situation might be handled if it occurred at its other news properties.

"In terms of covering actual news, CNET maintains 100 percent editorial independence, and always will," CBS said in a prepared statement.

CBS bought CNET for $1.8 billion in June 2008. In December, the site had 33.4 million visitors, up 8 percent from a year earlier.

2013 a fresh beginning, with hopes for policy ... - Real Estate India

??|?? January 13, 2013 ?? 05:29pm ??|Contributed by manoja

The year 2013 will be a game changer for the real estate industry, in terms of policies and regulations , with most pending bills expected to be passed in Parliament in the coming quarters, according to Pranab Datta, Chairman ? Knight Frank India. Specifically in the case of real estate , these include the passage of two crucial bills, namely Real Estate Regulation Bill and Land Acquisition Bill, which are expected to boost the sentiment of all stakeholders.

Pointing out that the government is serious on introducing reforms in India ? as can be seen from the recent approval of FDI in multi-brand retail ? Mr Datta believes that the RBI can also be expected to lower interest rates in the coming months, which will benefit developers as well as consumers .
?The change in sentiment on account of the above measures will have a positive impact on all the segments of real estate whether it is retail, office or residential and will certainly make 2013 a much better year in comparison to the last year,? he says.

Looking on the bright side from a home buyer?s point of view, he observes that the year can be considered positive for property buyers as prices have remained stagnant unlike the previous two years where most of the cities witnessed a steep price rise. ?This offers a window of opportunity for those buyers who were sitting on the fence till now to start considering their purchase decision,? he explains.

Speaking of the residential real estate sector, Rohan D?Silva- National Director, Residential Agency, Knight Frank India, adds that the residential real estate front has also seen some ?exciting launches across the country? , though not all of them may have met with the high expectations set. ?It has been observed that projects that offered differentiated products at a good price were well accepted by consumers ,? he says. This was true for products ranging from 4 to even 50 million INR.

?Some of the quick movers in the mass housing segments were products that were priced in the range of Rs. 4000 to Rs. 5500 per sq. in locations like Noida , Navi Mumbai and North Bengaluru. Launches in the range of Rs.16000 to Rs.19000 per sq. from reputed developers in Central Mumbai have also seen good off-take . This area has seen a lot of consumption because of the increase in prices for projects that were launched in 2010 ? 2011 and the ones who missed the boat last year didn?t want to leave out this time around.?

As Knight Frank representatives point out, the silver lining for all those who missed the boat, both developers and consumers, is that ?2013 will start a fresh beginning. In a country that has an acute housing shortage there will always be takers provided the offering is enticing? .

iPad 5, second-gen iPad mini to debut in March 2013

Brian White, an analyst for Topeka Capital Markets has released a new report regarding Apple's iPad line and when we may see the next refreshments. Citing ?checks? at CES 2013 the new generation of iPad and iPad mini models are set to launch in March of this year.

?Our checks at CES indicate APple will release the iPad 5 and the second-generation iPad mini this March. The iPad 5 is expected to be lighter and thinner than the iPad 4 that was released in October, while the form factor of the iPad mini should be similar to the first generation iPad mini that debuted in October.?

It's worth noting, and pointed out by MacRumors, that this claim compliments others that we've heard perviously; The Japanese blog Macatakara reported back in December of last year that not only will the iPad 5 be thinner and lighter, but will debut in March 2013. Another report that's in line with this one was by analyst Doug Freedman who stated (also in December) that Apple was ramping up their plans for the iPad mini 2. While all these make it that much easier to believe the claims, it isn't evidence.
It looks like Apple is inching away from their traditional releasing strategy; one iOS device refresh once a year. The latest, forth-generation iPad was released only seven months after the third-generation. And if this report is correct, they'll be bringing the release interval down to only five months. As confusing as it might sound, I would prefer Apple sticks with the ?one year plan?.
Unfortunately there's no mention on whether Apple will throw in a Retina display on the new iPad mini 2, but if I was a betting man I would say that it's very likely. Let's hope we're not let down again.

Stark Austrian drama "Amour" captures five Oscar nominations

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Austrian film "Amour" scored a surprising five Oscar nominations on Thursday, positioning the drama as the front-runner to seize Best Foreign Language Film, if not more of the movie industry's most coveted prizes.

"Amour," directed by Michael Haneke, was also nominated for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay, while star Emmanuelle Riva, 85, was nominated for Best Actress.

The French-language film painstakingly details the day-to-day struggles and indignities of elderly Parisian couple Georges and Anne, who must confront Anne's slide toward death as her health fails.

"Amour" joins "Kon-Tiki," the Norwegian drama chronicling Thor Heyerdahl's 1947 trans-Pacific expedition on a raft; Chilean political drama "No," starring Gael Garcia Bernal; Danish period drama "A Royal Affair"; and "War Witch," a Canadian drama about an African child soldier as nominees for Best Foreign Language Film.

Riva, best known for her role in the 1959 French New Wave classic "Hiroshima, Mon Amour," is the oldest nominee for Best Actress in Oscar history.

"I never thought, while working throughout the years in Europe and France, that one day, I would cross the Atlantic Ocean, come to the United States and be nominated," Riva said in a statement. "It is quite surreal for me."

"Amour," which netted Haneke his first Oscar nomination, could end up a big winner on Oscar night on February 24 if early favorites such as "Lincoln" and "Life of Pi" split votes, said Pete Hammond, awards columnist for Deadline.com.

"'Amour'...has a very passionate following among people. They feel very emotional about that film," Hammond said.

NOT FOR 'SISSIES'

Bagging Best Picture would be quite a feat for the film, which is currently released to only three theaters in the United States, according to box-office tracker Boxofficemojo.com.

Critics have applauded "Amour," which last year won the Palm d'Or, the highest honor given at France's Cannes Film Festival. But they have cautioned audiences about its icy realism and unrelentingly bleak storyline.

"Old age isn't for sissies, and neither is this film," movie critic Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times.

The New York Review of Books' Francine Prose called the drama the "ultimate horror film ... far scarier and more disturbing" than classics such as "Psycho" and "The Shining."

"War Witch" director Kim Nguyen recognized the long odds his film would have to overcome to upset "Amour."

"We are absolutely working to get the award," Nguyen said. "But we're aware that we're David vs. Goliath - and hopefully America likes an underdog story."

One film notably absent from the running was France's "The Intouchables," a box-office hit in Europe and a Golden Globe nominee that tells the true story of an immigrant ex-convict who forges a close relationship with a rich quadriplegic while serving as his caretaker.

"No" was the only foreign-language Oscar nominee on Thursday that was not nominated for a Golden Globe. The Golden Globes will be awarded on Sunday in Beverly Hills.

No, but I could run Deus Ex, Doom 3, Morrowind, and Oblivion, VtM:Bloodlines, Star Wars Rebellion and a number of race games and minor demos. But, I couldn?t run Longbow 2 without problems so I guess I was slightly off there. I bet it can?t run Zork either...

Win 7 is not bad for gaming and I?d suggest that OS for the OP.

Heh! An OS for an OP

I can say the same about Windows 7, though some required a little tweaking.

Yes, Win 7 is good too

Dubai Music Week, Dubai Rocks and Dubai Classics announced ...

Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) and The Global Gumbo Group (G3) have marked Dubai?s 2013 calendar with an eclectic series of events targeting avid music fans in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).

Combining DWTC?s expertise in event services management with G3?s mission to provide opportunities for western and Middle Eastern artists in MENA, the venture will result in the launch of Dubai Music Week (DMW), the region?s first music industry tradeshow and festival, in addition to several music festivals throughout the year.

Contributing to Dubai?s pioneering position as a regional media hub, DMW is the first music industry tradeshow in MENA which brings together all the major music labels, artists and merchants to exhibit their products and launch initiatives to key industry stakeholders and consumers.

DMW is set to launch in 2013 as a public event and will be an annual tradeshow including daily conferences, networking events and workshops as well as live performances.

The collaboration between DWTC and G3 will also result in the launch of Dubai Rocks and Dubai Classics, two large scale music festivals designed to attract the Gulf?s residents and tourists.

Dubai Rocks and Dubai Classics will see highly sought international and regional artists perform over several nights in Dubai. All three events will make a significant contribution to Dubai?s annual calendar of events.

The Global Gumbo Group (G3) is a first of its kind cross-cultural music and entertainment company based out of the UAE and Los Angeles, founded by legendary music producer, Quincy Jones, in partnership with Emirati social entrepreneur Badr Jafar.

The company is launching a series of initiatives and productions with the objective of shaping the future of the music industry and live entertainment in the MENA region. It aims to do so by developing multi-media opportunities across all entertainment platforms in the region with an added objective of nurturing new Arab talent, and acquiring content from the region to introduce to the rest of the world.

?Attracting businesses, investors and tourists from all over the world, Dubai is undoubtedly the region?s business and cultural hub,? said Helal Saeed Almarri, CEO of Dubai World Trade Centre.

?We are proud to host G3?s events as they further attract music makers, talent, and top brands in the music industry to Dubai. The emirate has a well-established network of radio, television and digital media outlets that serve the region, and this new venture with Quincy Jones? and Badr Jafar?s G3 reflects Dubai?s commitment to developing the media industry and boosting cultural tourism. With our world-class venue and top tier service offerings, Dubai will further establish itself on the world map for music and live events, and we aim to attract further events by 2015,? he added.

Badr Jafar, co-founder of G3 along with Quincy Jones, added, ?I strongly believe in the social powers of arts and entertainment, and so am constantly looking to see how best to use these spheres to create positive social impact. We both believe this collaboration with DWTC will provide a cultural exchange between our region and the rest of the world, using music?s amazing power to foster a better understanding and an appreciation for our common values.?
