Karen Dalton-Beninato: Scrapping the Scrapbook: New Orleans Newsprint's Loyal Fans

In the New Orleans Times Picayune shrinking print debate, with Future of Journalism Gurus calling naysayers print fetishists and Saints owner Tom Benson asking for the TP's owners to find a way to keep printing the newspaper ever day, I visited with a newsprint connoisseur today. My mother-in-law, a lifelong New Orleans resident.

She let us dive into her clippings. Here's a page on new Saints owner, some guy named Tom Benson, and here's one of many pages on everything Dr. John (aka Mac Rebennack) has ever done.

She used to call us: "Dr. John made the paper. I'll save you a clipping."

"That's okay. Hey, he's sitting right here. Do you want to say hi?"

"No. I'll save you a copy of the paper."

The senior center talk in the hallways has been that the paper doesn't shrink to three pages until October. Anyone who owns a monthly television schedule will become quite popular. The residents are perfecting their word-of-mouth chain for news, because once the paper loses four days out of the week you could be too late to catch the obituary and may miss your friend's funeral. Evacuation news will not be updated in print every day, and getting out of town is chaotic enough.

In October, there will be no newspaper out on Monday after the Sunday Saints game. She hopes Tom Benson buys the newspaper, and joked that Drew Brees, if he doesn't get signed, could stay limber by throwing our newspapers onto the front stoop. With his arm, it will land right where you want it.

"They had a write-up today that there's plenty of news to fill a paper every day." My mother-in-law read that in the paper, probably a letter to the editor.

Overall, she and her friends have far more to focus on than the newspaper. They have survived more than one hurricane in their lifetimes. They have seen the birth of the telegraph, daguerreotype, radio star, vinyl record and network television. They have seen births, deaths, natural and man-made disasters. Don't bring up the NOLA digital smartphone option. These women do not consider a phone to be smart, and they certainly do not want to read it.

"Where's that clipping from the storm? It gave what happened every day. I know it's around here somewhere." That's referring to the Times-Picayune's award-winning post-Katrina coverage.

She's been collecting up her clippings to give us to take home. Doesn't really want them anymore.

The scrapbook we now have includes the New Orleans Beatles Day Proclamation below which isn't from the newspaper, but it's very cool. My husband won it in a radio contest as a 9th Ward teenager, along with a little square of Ringo Starr's bed sheet. The sheet square probably floated away in the post-Hurricane Katrina levee fail but the scrapbook is sitting right here on the coffee table, where it belongs.

All-American Rejects Won't Let Kids 'Slow Build' Get Them Down

'Buy it, steal it, just feel it. I don't care,' frontman Tyson Ritter says of AAR's new album, Kids in the Street.

When the All-American Rejects returned in March with Kids in the Street, expectations were high. After all, it was the follow-up to 2008's When the World Comes Down — an album that continued their string of crossover successes thanks to the hit "Gives You Hell" — and powered by slick first single "Beekeeper's Daughter," Kids looked certain to continue that trend.

Of course, to date, Kids has yet to catch fire. It debuted at #18 on the Billboard albums chart and has subsequently dropped out of the Top 200 altogether. But the Rejects aren't worried by that slow start. In fact, to hear them tell it, everything's going according to plan.

"This is the record where we're trying to prove ourselves as an 'album band.' We've done fine with singles," AAR frontman Tyson Ritter told MTV News backstage at the Bamboozle festival. "Our last record, we were so proud of, but 'Gives You Hell,' sort of just steam-rolled the way and let nothing else surface. Honestly, man, we're a whatever-the-hell-anybody-takes-from-us band. Singles, records, buy it, steal it — just feel it. I don't care. Just come to a show."

And it's at those shows where the true scope of the Rejects' accomplishments can be felt. After all, over the course of a decade as a band, they've strung together a series of hits that would give any group pause ("Swing, Swing," "Move Along," "It Ends Tonight," "Dirty Little Secret," etc) and it's gotten to the point these days where the band can actually see the past 10 years play out before their very eyes. Which is why they're not worried about one album; they're career artists, through and through.

"It's been a slow build with this one, but, you know, we're in a climate where guitars aren't as cool as they used to be and, luckily, I feel like our fanbase has sort of hung out and waited for us for four records," Ritter said. "It's [been] 10 years now. We just got done playing shows, on a tour, and there are people that have been there for 10 years, singing 'Swing, Swing' in the back, drinking, and then girls up front with the X's out their hands, singing 'Dirty Little Secret' and 'Gives You Hell.' So it's crazy to look at a Rejects show, and as you scan to the back of the crowd, you're going through 10 years of people."

Shares of Facebook, still reeling from a botched IPO on May 18, tumbled again on Tuesday, shedding about 9 percent?to hit a new low at $29 a share.

That's down about 23 percent from its public offering price. The market value of the company, whose?IPO was heavily hyped?but plagued by glitches, has shed about $20 billion, according to Reuters.

Tuesday was the first day of trading for Facebook options, which may have contributed to the?pressure on the shares and increased volatility.??

The company was also beset by a bevy of rumors,?including?one that it was in talks to acquire?Israel-based face recognition company, Face.com?for up to $100 million. There was also talk that?it was eyeing?Oslo-based Opera Software.

People smile when they are frustrated, and the computer knows the difference

ScienceDaily (May 28, 2012) ? Do you smile when you're frustrated? Most people think they don't -- but they actually do, a new study from MIT has found. What's more, it turns out that computers programmed with the latest information from this research do a better job of differentiating smiles of delight and frustration than human observers do.

The research could pave the way for computers that better assess the emotional states of their users and respond accordingly. It could also help train those who have difficulty interpreting expressions, such as people with autism, to more accurately gauge the expressions they see.

"The goal is to help people with face-to-face communication," says Ehsan Hoque, a graduate student in the Affective Computing Group of MIT's Media Lab who is lead author of a paper just published in the IEEE Transactions on Affective Computing. Hoque's co-authors are Rosalind Picard, a professor of media arts and sciences, and Media Lab graduate student Daniel McDuff.

In experiments conducted at the Media Lab, people were first asked to act out expressions of delight or frustration, as webcams recorded their expressions. Then, they were either asked to fill out an online form designed to cause frustration or invited to watch a video designed to elicit a delighted response -- also while being recorded.

When asked to feign frustration, Hoque says, 90 percent of subjects did not smile. But when presented with a task that caused genuine frustration -- filling out a detailed online form, only to then find the information deleted after pressing the "submit" button -- 90 percent of them did smile, he says. Still images showed little difference between these frustrated smiles and the delighted smiles elicited by a video of a cute baby, but video analysis showed that the progression of the two kinds of smiles was quite different: Often, the happy smiles built up gradually, while frustrated smiles appeared quickly but faded fast.

In such experiments, researchers usually rely on acted expressions of emotion, Hoque says, which may provide misleading results. "The acted data was much easier to classify accurately" than the real responses, he says. But when trying to interpret images of real responses, people performed no better than chance, assessing these correctly only about 50 percent of the time.

Understanding the subtleties that reveal underlying emotions is a major goal of this research, Hoque says. "People with autism are taught that a smile means someone is happy," he says, but research shows that it's not that simple.

While people may not know exactly what cues they are responding to, timing does have a lot to do with how people interpret expressions, he says, For example, former British prime minister Gordon Brown was widely seen as having a phony smile, largely because of the unnatural timing of his grin, Hoque says. Similarly, a campaign commercial for former presidential candidate Herman Cain featured a smile that developed so slowly -- it took nine seconds to appear -- that it was widely parodied, including a spoof by comedian Stephen Colbert. "Getting the timing right is very crucial if you want to be perceived as sincere and genuine with your smiles," Hoque says.

Jeffrey Cohn, a professor of psychology at the University of Pittsburgh who was not involved in this research, says this work "breaks new ground with its focus on frustration, a fundamental human experience. While pain researchers have identified smiling in the context of expressions of pain, the MIT group may be the first to implicate smiles in expressions of negative emotion."

Cohn adds, "This is very exciting work in computational behavioral science that integrates psychology, computer vision, speech processing and machine learning to generate new knowledge ? with clinical implications." He says this "is an important reminder that not all smiles are positive. There has been a tendency to 'read' enjoyment whenever smiles are found. For human-computer interaction, among other fields and applications, a more nuanced view is needed."

In addition to providing training for people who have difficulty with expressions, the findings may be of interest to marketers, Hoque says. "Just because a customer is smiling, that doesn't necessarily mean they're satisfied," he says. And knowing the difference could be important in gauging how best to respond to the customer, he says: "The underlying meaning behind the smile is crucial."

The analysis could also be useful in creating computers that respond in ways appropriate to the moods of their users. One goal of the research of Affective Computing Group is to "make a computer that's more intelligent and respectful," Hoque says.

Blugolds Finish Strong at NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships

CLAREMONT, Calif. (Blugolds.com) ? The UW-Eau Claire men's and women's outdoor track & field teams finished strong after three days of competition at the 2012 NCAA Division III Championships.

The Blugold men came in sixth place with 30 points, tying for their second-best finish at nationals in school history (also sixth in 1992, highest finish was fourth in 1990). The Blugold women tied for 10^th with 18 points, their best finish since 2009 when they took fourth.

Wartburg won the women's national title with 129 points while UW-Oshkosh was second with 52. McMurry won the men's title with 66 points while four of the top six spots were held by Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) schools. UW-La Crosse was second, UW-Stout was third and UW-Oshkosh was fourth.

On the final day of competition, the Blugolds combined to win seven All-American honors after finishing eighth or better. Over the course of three days, the Blugolds secured a total of 10 All-American honors.

Thurgood Dennis (Fr.-Allouez, Wis./Green Bay Notre Dame) led the Blugolds today, finishing as runner-up in the 200-meter dash while taking third in the 100-meter dash. He finished with a time of 20.90 seconds in the 200-meter dash, the 10^th fastest time ever at the NCAA Division III Championship, and came in with a time of 10.47 seconds in the 100-meter dash. Both broke school records, which Dennis already held.

The women's 4x100-meter relay team of Megan Mulligan (Fr.-Lake Geneva, Wis./Badger), Talisa Emberts (Sr.-Sussex, Wis./Sussex-Hamilton), Lindsey Laufenberg (Fr.-Waunakee, Wis.) and Jordanne Greenup (Sr.-Fridley, Minn.) broke its own school record with a time of 47.11 seconds on the way to taking fifth place.

The men's 4x400-meter relay team of Cody Prince (Fr.-Appleton, Wis./North), Marty Richardson (Sr.-Appleton, Wis./Kimberly), Jacob Dennis-Oehling (So.-Whitewater, Wis.) and Dennis took fifth with a time of 3:11.78.

In the women's triple jump, Julia Baranek (Sr.-Port Washington, Wis.) was sixth with a mark of 12.06 meters (39-7), narrowly missing her own school record of 12.07 meters (39-7.25).

The women's 4x400-meter relay team of Steph Rouse (Fr.-Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins), Emberts, Michelle Baranek (Sr.-Port Washington, Wis.) and Greenup finished in sixth place with a time of 3:48.19.

Greenup also finished as an All-American in the 200-meter dash as she took seventh with a time of 24.67 seconds.

In the men's shot put, Joe Lilek (Sr.-Tomahawk, Wis.) finished in 11^th place with a distance of 16.63 meters (54-6.75).

Ashlyn Mauer (Jr.-Sheboygan Falls, Wis.) was 12^th in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:58.91.

Aaron Easker (Jr.-Eland, Wis./Wittenberg-Birnamwood) was 12^th in the men's 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:43.59.

In the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase, Jeremy Kieser (Jr.-Verona, Wis.) finished in 14^th place with a time of 9:34.80.

Yes, Charlize Theron had a good side.

When the Oscar-winning actress, 36, briefly stripped down for her role in "Snow White and the Huntsman," she had one rule: don't shoot her from the front or back. "I am very good with side nudity," Theron laughed during an MTV News interview. "I tend to find that's probably my best kind of nudity."

She added: "Back is a little too much back; I need an angle. I like angular nudity. I can do a small percentage of one side and the other."

As the vain Queen Ravenna, Theron shot scenes where she would take baths in black and white goo. Though it helped her character maintain a youthful glow, Theron admitted the beauty routine wasn't as beneficial in real life.

The actress -- mom to son Jackson, 6 months -- joked that she's either "going to die a very slow death" or gain superpowers after being submerged in the mystery goo. "I can bend metal with my breath," she laughed. "I don't know where that came from."

"Snow White and the Huntsman" -- also starring Kristen Stewart, 22, and Chris Hemsworth, 28 -- is in theaters June 1.

Morocco hosts musicians, imprisons its own

RABAT, Morocco?? Morocco's glittering Mawazine international music festival wraps up this weekend with performances by Mariah Carey and Lenny Kravitz, after nine days of showcasing the North African kingdom's cool factor ? even as dissident Moroccan artists are imprisoned for their anti-establishment sentiments.

The 11-year-old "Rhythms of the World" festival in the capital Rabat has always highlighted Morocco's contradictions as the country spends millions to lure top world artists to perform at generally free concerts, while much the country remains mired in poverty.

In past years the festival has been attacked by Islamists for inviting gay performer Elton John in 2010 and by activists for the cost of attracting Shakira and other high profile acts in 2011, but this year the theme of protest is freedom of expression.

Just a week before the festival began, Human Rights Watch slammed Morocco for sentencing a rapper to a year in prison for lyrics deemed insulting to police ? a common theme in rap music elsewhere in the world.

"Morocco hosts one famous international music festival after another each spring, but meanwhile it imprisons one of its own singers solely because of lyrics and images that displease the authorities," Sarah Leah Whitson, Mideast director of the group said in a statement. "Morocco should be known as a haven for world music, not for locking up singers with a political message."

Moroccan rapper Mouad Belghouat, known as El-Haqed, or "The Enraged" was convicted on May 11 of "showing contempt" to public servants with his song "Dogs of the State" about police corruption. He is known for his political activism and vitriolic songs attacking social injustice, the monarchy and corruption.

A week later, dissident poet Youssef Belkhdim was convicted of attacking police ? a charge he denies ? at a sit-in he organized in support of Belghouat and sentenced to two years in prison.

The two men belonged to Morocco's pro-democracy February 20 movement that last year brought tens of thousands into the streets protesting corruption and calling for political reform.

The extravagant sums spent on the Mawazine have been a mainstay of the movement's slogans. Festival organizers maintain that the Mawazine's estimated $7 million price tag is worth it because it improves Morocco's image abroad and gives people at home access to music from around the world. The festival is funded largely by corporate sponsors with strong ties to the state.

"It's a celebration. It's a celebration of the city, a celebration of Morocco and it reflects a bit Morocco's good life to the world," said program director Mahmoud Lemseffer. "It is a vehicle to present the image of our country, of its hospitality and tolerance."

Tens of thousands attend each of the festival's eight venues which present Arabic music, Moroccan music, music from sub-Saharan Africa as well as international acts, which this year included Evanescence, the Scorpions, Gloria Gaynor, Nigel Kennedy and Jimmy Cliff.

Most of the acts have free sections open to the public and on Tuesday, families strolling along Rabat's Bouregreg river stopped to listen to Beninian songstress Angelique Kidjo belt out classics from South African diva Mariam Makebe and talk about the struggle against apartheid.

But for critics, there is irony in punishing artists at home while hosting international ones known for their support of freedom of expression. Lenny Kravitz, for instance, has striven in song after song to confront America's tortured attitude about race.

"I think that people should really say what they feel ? everybody has the right to speak their mind, you see how things change in places where people were once condemned," said Kravitz at a press conference Thursday when asked about politics in music. "When I was in Brazil a couple of years ago, I was talking with (musician and activist) Caetano Veloso who dealt with that same thing, who did jail time ? and now he has made a difference."

Salif Traore of the Ivorian band Magic System said that for African artists, speaking truth to power and freedom of expression is what their music is all about.

"We in Africa, we say that artists, musicians and singers are the eyes, ears, and mouths of the people," he told The Associated Press, when asked about his views on the El-Haqed case.

Rachid el-Belghiti, who heads a national anti-Mawazine campaign, also contests the government's assertion that it's supporting culture in Morocco with this festival, countering that it's really just about making the country look good abroad.

He said the Mawazine, which is run by a close confidant of King Mohammed VI, eats up the lion's share of corporate sponsorship so that little is left for other festivals around the country.

As millions are being spent to lure in big name acts, local theaters and dance schools around the country are closing down because of a lack of funding.

"A country which puts its artists in prison simply for expressing themselves with their voice or their instruments cannot pretend to support culture," he said. "That's impossible."

Craig Grigonis, a third generation insulation installer in Michigan, watched his father die in 1987 of mesothelioma, a deadly form of cancer with one known cause: exposure to asbestos.

Before he died, his father James, who worked with insulation made of asbestos, sued the company that made the toxic substance and recovered some of his medical bills.

?They want plaintiffs to die?
Asbestos is still legal in the U.S. Every year, 9,000 Americans are stricken with asbestos-related illnesses, like lung cancer, asbestosis and mesothelioma, according to the Environmental Working Group.

Workers who have been most exposed include pipefitters, shipworkers, including U.S. Navy personnel, and construction workers.

Because asbestos was in widespread use in an array of products in the 1960s and 70s, and it takes a latency period of 20 to 40 years for asbestos-related diseases to emerge, many consumers are just now getting sick and filing suite based on their exposure to the toxic substance.

Lawyers who represent asbestos victims say asbestos makers have known about its dangers since as early as 1949, and now that the litigation is picking up, the model bills are a new delay tactic.
