Trayvon witness' mom: Police doubt self-defense

The mother of a 13-year-old witness in the slaying of Trayvon Martin said Wednesday that police waited five days before seeking to question her son and then told her they didn't believe the shooting was self-defense.

Asked by host Al Sharpton on MSNBC TV's "PoliticsNation" whether the boy, who called 911 at the time of the incident Feb. 26, believed George Zimmerman, 28, shot Martin, 17, in self-defense, Cheryl Brown firmly replied, "Not at all."

(Msnbc.com is not naming the boy because he is a minor. Sharpton has been active in protests and petitions seeking to have Zimmerman arrested.)

ABC News reported this week that Sanford, Fla., police sources told it that the boy saw a man fitting Zimmerman's description lying on the grass crying for help seconds before he heard the gunshot that killed Martin. Many news organizations, including msnbc.com, linked to and referred to the ABC News report. Advocates for Zimmerman have argued that the report supported his attorney's claim that he fired in self-defense.

Sanford police, who have previously said they wouldn't take questions about the case, didn't answer calls seeking comment from msnbc.com on Wednesday.

The shooting occurred Feb. 26, and Brown's son called 911 to report it at the time. But police didn't seek to question him until March 2, Brown said. She wasn't home, so they returned March 5, meaning eight days passed before police actually questioned a key eyewitness.

"I was waiting every day for someone to come knocking on the door," she said.

Once they did, Brown alleged, police tried to lead her son to agree to certain assertions, such as the race of the person on the ground and what he was wearing. But the boy stuck to his insistence that he couldn't make out either because it was too dark.

Brown alleged that the lead investigator "told me this was not self-defense," saying she should "read between the lines" because "this was racial stereotyping."

Martin was black; Zimmerman is Hispanic.

She said the investigator said he had children of his own "and seemed angered by it," saying, "I need to prove this was not self-defense."

Brown's son was walking the family dog when he saw the person lying on the ground, she said. He went to help, but the dog escaped from its leash, so he went chasing after it rather than rushing to the person, she said.?

Police have confirmed that Zimmerman told them that Martin knocked him to the ground and began beating him. At no time did her son see anyone beating anyone, Brown said.

In the days since the shooting, the boy has reflected on whether he might have been able to help or even save Martin had he not tried to retrieve his dog, she said.

"Unfortunately, he has a lot of guilt about that," she said.

In other words, he didn't see much, save for a few inch-long amphipods, shrimplike bottom feeders, scuttling across the soft ocean floor. Due to a hyraulic failure on his submarine's sample collector, Cameron was also unable to bring back much in the way of souvenirs.?

Cameron is just the third person in history to visit Challenger Deep, which lies in the 1,500-mile-long Mariana Trench in the North Pacific. The other two adventurers, US Navy lieutenant Don Walsh and Swiss scientist Jacques Piccard, took their dive together in 1960. But they didn't see much, as their landing stirred up so much sediment that it obscured their vision. After just 20 minutes on the bottom, the two explorers returned to the surface empty-handed.

Unlike the vehicle that transported Walsh and Piccard, Cameron made his trip in the Deepsea Challenger, a vessel that is much taller than it is wide. This unique, 24-foot-long ship took eight years to build in Australia. It's cost hasn't been disclosed.

The vessel is innovative in several ways. To protect against the potentially crushing pressure in the deep sea, the project's lead engineer, Ron Allum, designed a new foam flotation material Isofloat that will not crack, compress or lose buoyancy on the journey. This foam makes up 70 percent of the submersible's volume.

Other important components of the sub are its lights and cameras. Cameron captured hi-resolution 3D footage during his dive.?

Scientific feats such as trips to the bottom of the sea, are most commonly tackled by governments and scientific organizations. And other entrepreneurs like Richard Branson are also trying to get to the deepest part of the sea.

But Cameron has distinguished himself. Not only does he have access to the necessary fiscal resources, but his talent with a camera, curiosity and adventurous spirit set him apart.

?Imagination feeds exploration,? Cameron said, according to National Geographic, one of the trip's sponsors, before the journey. ?You have to imagine the possible before you can go and do it.?

Though he has the necessary skills for the job, Cameron's physical attributes provided some challenges: All six feet, two inches of Cameron were?crammed inside a metal sphere with a diameter at the surface of just 43 inches. During the dive,?Cameron reported that his sub shrank by three inches, due to the immense pressure. ?

"I can't say it's very comfortable," Cameron told the AP. "And you can't stretch out."

Washington, DC -- Treatment areas of ambulances fared well when tested for dangerous bacteria, according to a new study published in the April issue of the American Journal of Infection Control, the official publication of APIC - the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology. Approximately six percent of sites sampled in Chicago-area ambulances tested positive for Staphyloccocus aureus (S. aureus), a bacterium that can cause serious infections and can easily acquire resistance to potent antibiotics.

A team of researchers from Lewis University in Romeoville, Ill took samples from 26 areas inside of 71 ambulances from 34 different Chicago-area municipalities. The team recovered 100 S. aureus isolates from more than 1,800 sites that were sampled (less than six percent). At least one S. aureus sample was found in 69 percent of ambulances tested. Of all isolates detected, 77 percent showed resistance to at least one commonly used antibiotic, and 12 percent were identified as the "superbug" known as methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA).

The authors state, "Of interest, only 5 of 71 ambulances tested positive for MRSA in at least one location (yielding the 12 MRSA isolates studied). Although there have been few previous studies of front-line advanced life support ambulances, a higher frequency of suspected MRSA in ambulance fleets has been reported previously."

"These results indicate that first responders are doing a good job of protecting their patients," adds James Rago, PhD, lead study author and assistant professor of biology at Lewis University. "The research is significant because improper cleaning of these surfaces could be a cause for concern due to the frequency with which emergency medical technicians may touch infected surfaces during patient care, the prevalence of open wounds among burn victims, and the fact that these patients go directly to the hospital where they come in contact with patients with compromised immune systems who are vulnerable to infections."

The authors conclude, "Given the ease with which S. aureus can survive on inanimate surfaces and exchange antibiotic resistance elements, a conscientious approach to the application of existing cleaning techniques, especially in key ambulance sites, needs to continue."

Sgt. Robert Bales: His wife says 'he loves children'

In a Today Show interview Monday, Karilyn Bales says it's 'unbelievable' that her husband would kill 17 Afghan civilians, including nine children. Staff Sgt. Robert Bales is charged with premeditated murder.

The wife of a US soldier accused of killing 17 Afghan civilians says her husband showed no signs of stress before he deployed, and adds that she doesn't feel like she'll ever believe he was involved in the killings.

Karilyn Bales defended her husband, Staff Sgt. Robert Bales, in an interview for NBC's "Today" show that aired on Monday.

She said she has spoken to her husband by telephone twice since he was detained, but she didn't ask her husband about the accusations he faces.

"We couldn't discuss those details," she said. "He was ... seemed a bit confused, as to where he was and why he was there."

Officials say Bales wandered off base in southern Afghanistan earlier this month and killed eight Afghan adults and nine children. He was formally charged Friday with 17 counts of premeditated murder and other crimes. He is being held at a military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

Karilyn Bales said the accusations are "unbelievable to me."

"He loves children, he's like a big kid himself," she said. "I have no idea what happened, but he would not ... he loves children, and he would not do that."

She said her husband joined the Army after the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, to "protect his family, friends and country. He wanted to do his part." She said her husband is "very brave, very courageous."

Her husband never had nightmares or other signs of post-traumatic stress disorder, Karilyn Bales said, and she feels like he was mentally fit when he was deployed. She said he never told her about a traumatic brain injury he suffered while in Iraq until he returned home.

"He shielded me from a lot of what he went through," she said. "He's a very tough guy."

U.S. investigators have said they believe Bales killed in two episodes, returning to his base after the first attack and later slipping away to kill again. He is reported to have surrendered without a struggle.

The 38-year-old married father of two was on his fourth tour of duty in a war zone, having served three tours in Iraq, where he suffered the head injury and a foot injury. His civilian attorney, John Henry Browne, has said Bales and his family had thought he was done fighting, but he was sent to Afghanistan.

Karilyn Bales said she doesn't think she'll have to ask her husband what happened that night in Afghanistan because "I think he'll tell me what happened, from his point of view."

She said she can't believe he was involved in the killings.

"I don't think anything will really change my mind in believing that he did not do this. This is not what it appears to be," she said.

PM pledges inquiry on cash for access claim

LONDON (Reuters) - Prime Minister David Cameron pledged on Sunday to investigate why a senior Conservative party fundraiser offered exclusive access to him in return for donations of 250,000 pounds a year.

Cameron said the actions of co-treasurer Peter Cruddas, caught on film by undercover reporters, had been "completely unacceptable", as he sought to limit the damage to his centre-right party.

Cruddas resigned soon after the Sunday Times newspaper published video of him telling journalists posing as international financiers that the contributions would enable them to have input into public policy and ask Cameron "practically any question you want".

The affair threatens to undo Cameron's efforts to shake off his party's image of being too close to the interests of business and the rich as Britain undergoes an austerity programme to cut its budget deficit.

"This is not the way that we raise money in the Conservative party, it should not have happened," said Cameron. "I will make sure that there is a proper party inquiry to make sure this can't happen again."

The disclosures capped a torrid week for the Conservative-led coalition government after a backlash over a budget that cut tax rates for top earners while freezing tax allowances for pensioners.

While there were also tax cuts for lower earners, the budget went down badly with many Britons, giving the impression the government was looking after the wealthy and cared little for those suffering rising unemployment and falling incomes as the economy struggles to recover from recession.

The funding issue is embarrassing for Cameron, who promised before coming to power in May 2010 to curb corporate lobbying, saying it was the "next big scandal waiting to happen".

The revelations were "utterly disgraceful", Treasury Minister Danny Alexander, a senior member of Cameron's Liberal Democrat coalition partners, told BBC TV.

The opposition Labour party called for an independent inquiry into what access had been sought and obtained, and demanded Cameron make a statement about the affair to parliament.

"It can't just be an internal Conservative party investigation sweeping it under the carpet," said Labour leader Ed Miliband.

"This is very serious for our democracy because we need to have the highest standards in our public life. And what we have seen today falls way below the standards that British people have a right to expect," Miliband added.

The disclosures will add urgency to talks between all three main parties in coming weeks on reform of political funding.

Previous reform attempts have foundered on the Conservatives' reluctance to cap donations from wealthy individuals and Labour's desire to avoid limits on contributions from unions.

"PREMIER LEAGUE"

The Sunday Times reporters had posed as Liechtenstein-based fund managers who wanted to develop contacts with Cameron and other ministers on behalf of their Middle East investors.

Cruddas told them the access would be "awesome for your business", adding some of the party's bigger donors had enjoyed dinner with Cameron and his wife Samantha in their private apartment at his Number 10 Downing Street office.

He advised them that a donation of 100,000 pounds was a minimum but that 200,000 or 250,000 pounds was "premier league".

With that kind of funding "things will open up for you", he said. "You do really pick up a lot of information."

When they met Cameron, he said, "within that room, everything is confidential and you will be able to ask him practically any question that you want".

He suggested they could even influence party policy, saying: "If you are unhappy about something, we will listen to you and we will put it into the policy committee at Number 10."

The paper reported Cruddas as saying he was sure there were "ways to work around it" when told by the undercover reporters that the money came from a foreign wealth fund. Foreign donations are banned under British election law. He suggested they establish a subsidiary company in Britain, the paper said.

Conservative party deputy chairman Michael Fallon said Cruddas had only been recently in the post and had been boasting.

"No donation was actually formally offered, no donation was accepted and it certainly wouldn't have been accepted on that kind of basis," Fallon told Sky TV.

"I need to get you off this idea that anybody can give money to the Conservative party and start dictating policy. That doesn't happen," he said.

In a resignation statement, Cruddas, founder and executive chairman of London spread betting firm CMC Markets, said he had not consulted any politicians or senior party officials before meeting the bogus financiers and denied that donors would have been able to influence policy or gain undue access to politicians.

"I deeply regret any impression of impropriety arising from my bluster in that conversation," said Cruddas, himself a major donor to the Conservative Party.

"Specifically, it was categorically not the case that I could offer, or that David Cameron would consider, any access as a result of a donation," he said.

"But in order to make that clear beyond doubt, I have regrettably decided to resign with immediate effect."

Santorum Makes Inroads Into Romney Territory in Big Louisiana Win

Rick Santorum's convincing win in Saturday's Louisiana Republican presidential primary was fueled by the same groups that have supported his candidacy in other contests -- but the state's more conservative and more religious GOP electorate also allowed Santorum to defeat Mitt Romney among the constituencies that have?gone for Romney in the past.

Exit polls show Santorum continuing to run well among the most conservative, less educated, lower- and middle-income voters that have propelled him to wins in other Southern and Midwestern states. His inroads into?some traditional Romney constituencies included first-time wins?among non-evangelical voters and voters who make more than $100,000 a year.

Santorum's campaign called his "bayou blowout"?a game-changer, asserting that?"this two-man race is just beginning." But Romney's delegate lead and the nature of the electorates in upcoming primaries make that unlikely.

Santorum, the former Pennsylvania senator, ran up huge margins among lower- and middle-income voters in Louisiana. He bested former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, 56 percent to 19 percent, among those voters making less than $50,000 a year, who made up slightly more than a quarter of the electorate. Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, struggled among this group, finishing third, with 16 percent. Romney has only won low-income voters in a handful of states, including Illinois last week.

Among voters making between $50,000 and $100,000 a year, Santorum again won big, capturing 51 percent of the voters, to Romney's 26 percent. The winner of this bloc has captured most of the primaries thus far, though Santorum won this group in Ohio and Michigan, despite losing narrowly in both states to Romney.

But Santorum also won among those voters making more than $100,000 a year -- the first time in this nominating process that he has won among the more managerial wing of the party in states where entrance or exit polls were conducted. He took 42 percent of this group, compared to 34 percent for Romney, who had won higher-income voters in every state except South Carolina and Georgia, where Gingrich won handily.

Santorum continued to excel -- and Romney continued to struggle -- among the most conservative and most religious voters. Nearly half of voters on Saturday identified as "very conservative," and Santorum won 53 percent of them, to 23 percent for Romney and 18 percent for Gingrich. The only states in which Romney has won the most conservative voters are hardly GOP bastions: New Hampshire, Nevada, Arizona, Massachusetts and Virginia (where only Romney and Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, were on the ballot).

Santorum also won a majority of white evangelical or born-again Christians, beating Romney by 35 points among this group. But the two candidates also ran neck-and-neck among non-evangelical voters: Santorum won those who did not identify as white evangelicals by three percentage points, while Romney won by one among all non-evangelicals. Romney had won the non-evangelical vote in every state except Georgia, where Gingrich won in a landslide in his home state.

Louisiana Catholics, who accounted for more than a third of voters on Saturday, preferred Santorum over Romney, 46 percent to 30 percent. It was only the second time this cycle that Santorum, who is Catholic, has won among voters who say they share his faith -- though in other Southern states, Catholics made up such a small percentage of the electorate that exit poll results were not considered significant.

But Santorum continues to run stronger among Protestants -- particularly those who attend church more frequently -- than among Catholics. He defeated Romney, who is Mormon, by 28 points among Protestants on Saturday, and by 37 points among Protestants who attend services on a weekly basis.

Romney continues to enjoy an advantage in electability, but Santorum gained slightly on that question in Louisiana. A plurality of voters -- 38 percent -- said the most important candidate quality was the ability to defeat President Obama in the general election, and Romney won half of them, compared to just 30 percent for Santorum. Romney has won these voters in every state except South Carolina and Georgia, where Gingrich won them.

Asked which candidate was most likely to defeat Obama, voters were less decisive: 42 percent chose Romney, while 34 percent selected Santorum. That represents a slight drop for Romney. In Illinois last week, 60 percent of voters thought he was the most likely candidate to beat Obama, and Romney also performed better on this question on March 13 in Alabama (46 percent) and Mississippi (49 percent). In each of the March 13 Southern states, despite Santorum's wins there, voters thought Gingrich was just as likely as Santorum to defeat Obama.

Santorum's stronger performance in Louisiana is unlikely to alter the race significantly. Romney remains well ahead in the delegate race, and on April 3, when the next slate of primaries will be held, it will be outside the South in?Maryland, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. In Maryland and Wisconsin this week, automated-telephone polls -- which do not meet National Journal's standards for publication -- showed Romney well ahead of Santorum. Santorum is not even on the ballot in the District.

Edison Research conducted the Louisiana exit poll Saturday at polling places across the state for the National Election Pool, a consortium of news organizations. The Louisiana exit poll consists of interviews with 1,499 voters.

Runaway planets ejected from galaxy at insane speeds

New evidence suggests that planets are being tossed out of the Milky Way at speeds comparable to the speed of light.

Planets in tight orbits around stars that get ejected from our galaxy may actually themselves be tossed out of the Milky Way at blisteringly fast speeds of up to 30 million miles per hour, or a fraction of the speed of light, a new study finds.

"These warp-speed planets would be some of the fastest objects in the galaxy, aside from photons and?particles like cosmic rays," said Avi Loeb, an astrophysicist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Mass. "In terms of large, solid objects, they would be the fastest. It would take them 10 seconds or so to cross the diameter of the Earth."

In 2005, astronomers found evidence of a runaway star that was flying out of the?Milky Way galaxy?at a speed of 1.5 million mph (2.4 million kph). This hypervelocity star was part of a double-star system that wandered too close to the supermassive black hole at the center of the galaxy.

The strong gravitational pull at the galactic center ripped the stars apart, sending one hurtling through space at high speeds, while capturing the other to stay in orbit around the massive black hole.

In the seven years since, 16 of these?hypervelocity stars?have been found, and Loeb and his colleagues began to wonder whether planets could also be sent tearing through space at such extreme velocities.

The researchers created simulations that examined what would happen if each star had at least one planet orbiting nearby. They found that up to 10 percent of planets tightly orbiting one of the stars could stay bound as the?star is flung outward. The other star that is captured by the black hole could also have its planet ripped away from it, and this planet would then be pitched into interstellar space at intensely fast speeds as well.

"We were trying to predict, if you have planets around each of the stars in the binary system, what fraction of the planets might go along with the hypervelocity star for the ride," Loeb told SPACE.com. "What we found is that some of them get expelled at high speeds, up to a few percent of the speed of light. Some of the planets get ripped apart from the host stars and get sent out at high speeds, and they also become hypervelocity planets this way."?

These planets would travel through space at unparalleled velocities, the researchers said.

A group of biologists from Denmark and the US led by Jakob Christensen-Dalsgaard, University of Southern Denmark, and Catherine Carr, University of Maryland, have shown that the turtle ear is specialized for underwater hearing. The new discovery is published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B March 21st , Special features of the turtle ear ? a large, air-filled middle ear and a movable tympanic disk increase its sensitivity for underwater sound. Laser measurements of disk vibrations in response to underwater sound show up to 100-fold larger vibrations of the disk than the surrounding water, most likely because the air volume resonates in an underwater sound field and drives the tympanic disk.

The tympanic middle ear is often seen as an adaptation to hearing in air, but the turtle tympanic ear is an anomaly here, because turtles are generally 100-fold less sensitive than other animals with eardrums, like mammals, birds and reptiles.

However, turtles are amphibious animals, and anatomical and biophysical studies by a group of biologists from Denmark and the US have shown that the ear of the red-eared slider is specialized for underwater rather than airborne sound.

CT scans, laser measurements from the ear under water and auditory evoked responses showed that the turtle ear was more sensitive for underwater than for airborne sound. The sensitivity is caused by the air filled middle ear. Resonance in the air cavity lined by the tympanic disc drives the disc and amplifies its vibrations up to 100 fold under water.

What the turtle is using its sensitive underwater hearing for is unknown. However, the sensitive hearing can be used for prey capture, predator avoidance and navigation under water. An alternative possibility is that turtles communicate by underwater sound. Underwater sound communication is unknown in the red-eared slider, but has recently been described in two other turtle species.

Obama raises $45 million in February

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Picking up the pace, President Barack Obama raised $45 million for his re-election bid in February, bringing his total to about $300 million for this election cycle, his campaign said Monday.

Obama stepped up fundraising efforts during the month, collecting nearly twice as much as the $23 million per month average he raised during the final three months of 2011 and more than the $29.1 million he raised in January. The money was spread among Obama's campaign, the Democratic party and two campaign funds.

Obama's campaign said nearly 350,000 people contributed in February and the average donation was about $59 for the entire election cycle. Nearly 98 percent of the donations were $250 or less.

With Republicans locked in an extended primary campaign, Obama's team has tried to build a large 50-state operation that will help it register new voters, bring back past supporters and boost turnout. Obama's campaign had about $75 million in the bank through the end of January and totals for February were not immediately available.

Campaign officials have implored its supporters to donate money and get involved, pointing to Republican-leaning super PACs expected to raise hundreds of millions of dollars to defeat the president. Obama's campaign said earlier this year that it would bless big-money super PACs supporting Democrats as a way of countering the Republican effort.

In an email to donors last week, campaign manager Jim Messina cited a poll showing Obama trailing against Republican Mitt Romney and asked them to get involved.

"We're looking at a race that will be tighter than you think. And the other side has groups ready to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to tear down President Obama," Messina said.

Underscoring the urgency, Obama's totals for February fell short of the $56 million he raised in February 2008, when he was seeking the Democratic nomination against Hillary Rodham Clinton. Republicans said it was a sign of tepid support.

Kirsten Kukowski, a Republican National Committee spokeswoman, said Obama was "having a hard time convincing voters he deserves another term" following three years of "record debt, high unemployment, and soaring gas prices and healthcare costs."

Obama has boosted fundraising efforts in recent weeks, holding events last month in Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle. Last week, Obama raised money in Chicago and Atlanta.

The fundraising reports were being filed ahead of a Tuesday campaign finance deadline for presidential campaigns.
